- “Eight healthcare
groups including the American Medical Association, AARP and the American
Heart Association Tuesday said they are launching a series of events to
call out flaws in the American Health Care Act in key markets across the
country.” https://www.forbes.com/sites/brucejapsen/2017/06/13/nationwide-blitz-launched-to-derail-trumpcare-in-senate/#109f816d2bae
In addition, 34 faith groups have joined forces calling on the
Senate to protect Medicaid. https://networklobby.org/news/060917healthcare/
Let’s join these groups in opposing this by calling our senators,
and those senators we know who are on the fence or who are for this
revision. We must tell our stories
from our hearts.
- In her statement about the shooting at a congressional
baseball practice yesterday, Gabby Giffords, a former congressperson who
was also the victim of a shooting, made a statement: http://fortune.com/2017/06/14/steve-scalise-shooting/
The need to join the rest of the world and have responsible national gun
laws has to become a reality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFIYLimyRHU
Let’s join Gabby Giffords’ group Americans for Responsible Solutions and
help make this happen: http://americansforresponsiblesolutions.org/stand-with-gabby/ Let’s also send Rep. Steve Scalise a
get-well card and let him know that we do not condone violence: https://scaliseforms.house.gov/contact/
- Following Attorney General Sessions’ Senate testimony on Tuesday, Senators Durbin, Warren, and Booker have questioned his ability to serve and called for his resignation: http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/337673-durbin-on-sessions-testimony-hard-to-see-how-he-could-continue-to-serve?amp and http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/337696-warren-goes-on-tweetstorm-over-sessions-testimony-he-should and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V07geuonPHo&app=desktop Let’s join their call: Attorney General Jeff Sessions, US Dept of Justice, 950 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20530
- For the second time, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has interrupted Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA): https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/06/14/as-a-prosecutor-kamala-d-harris-doggedness-was-praised-now-shes-hysterical/?utm_term=.39305bb641fe Let’s ask him to stop interrupting his colleague: https://www.mccain.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/contact-form and let’s thank Sen. Harris for her persistence: https://www.harris.senate.gov/content/contact-senator
- Yesterday, 196
members of Congress filed a lawsuit against Trump, citing the emoluments
clause http://n.pr/2rYWE5u http://wapo.st/2t1SgBp Thus far, all who have signed on
are Democrats, with no Republicans joining in. Let's thank Senator Richard
Blumenthal (202-224-2823)
and Representative John Conyers Jr. (202-225-5126)
for leading the charge. We can read the complaint to see if our MoC are
among those who have filed the lawsuit, and either thank them for doing
so, or ask them to join in as a congressional plaintiff http://bit.ly/2sovWnJ
- Senators have
struck a deal with bipartisan support to impose sanctions against Russia,
while also limiting the president's power to lift sanctions without
congressional approval and have passed (97-2) S.Amdt.232: To impose
sanctions with respect to the Russian Federation and to combat terrorism
and illicit financing http://www.politico.com/story/2017/06/14/senate-passes-russia-sanctions-trump-limits-239553?cmpid=sf
It sounds like it may be a bit tougher of a sell in
the House. Looks like we need to call our Reps to let them know we want it
to pass, and we can also thank our Senators for working across the aisle
to move this forward.
- The
tax-payer funded Zika vaccine will have no price controls. http://www.miamiherald.com/news/health-care/article155665424.html
We can ask the Army to negotiate a better deal. Acting Secretary of the
Army, Robert Speer, 101 Army Pentagon, Washington DC 20310-0101.
- The legislation known as
the "No Hearing, No Vote Act" would require a bill being passed under
reconciliation to be voted on by at least one committee and have had at
least one hearing. http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/337663-dems-introduce-bill-to-block-obamacare-repeal-vote-without-senate
Let's tell our senators that we support "No hearing No Vote"
when we're making our calls about healthcare.
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) and other House LGBT Equality Caucus members reintroduced the LGBT Pride Act, which would provide funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to collect data on anti-LGBT violence and suicides: http://www.hrc.org/blog/the-lgbt-pride-act-would-combat-violence-suicide-in-lgbtq-community We can tell our representatives that we support this bill and would like to see it move through committee during this session.
- Right now,
more than 65 million people in the world are refugees, and 34,000 more
people are displaced from their homes every day. (http://www.unhcr.org/576408cd7.pdf) Donald Trump wants to turn his back on
them, but the need to take refugees into the United States has never been
greater. Let's join the Stand With Refugees campaign and call our
representatives and senators to let them know we welcome refugees. Make
the call through http://www.standwithrefugees.us.
Other Actions
- The Knight First Amendment Institute at
Columbia University, which "works to defend and strengthen the
freedoms of speech and the press in the digital age through strategic
litigation, research, and public education," has written a letter to
Trump demanding he stop blocking his constituents (the latest to be
blocked by DT: author Stephen King!). It's not just Trump who is trying to
infringe on the free speech of his constituents. If any of us have been
blocked by our MoC (or DT for that matter), the Institute would like to
know. Send an email to blockedonline@knightcolumbia.org with the following information: 1)
screenshot of the post that you suspect led to your blocking, and 2)
screenshot of the page showing you are blocked. Let's not let our elected
officials get away with this!

AG Brian Frosh 200
St. Paul Place, Baltimore, MD 21202-2202
- While
we work to take back the US House of Representatives, let’s also remember
the importance of *state* legislatures. One of the most important
things we can do to resist Trump and to move progressive policies forward
during his administration is winning back state legislatures, and we have
a great chance to do so this November in Virginia. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/05/democrats-win-new-york-new-hampshire-flip-seats-trump/527970/
But it's going to take a lot of hard work from all of us! Let's sign up
with flippable to learn more about how to volunteer to help: https://www.flippable.org/flipvablue-volunteer. Let’s donate what we can to these
campaigns. Even a $5.00 contribution matters! https://www.crowdpac.com/campaigns/207924/support-flippable-to-turn-virginia-blue-this-year
- Let’s
thank Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette for bringing involuntary manslaughter
charges against five officials for their alleged failure to address the
Flint water crisis. http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2017/06/five_official_charged_with_man.html Facing
felony convictions punishable to up to 15 years in prison and/or a $7,500
fine are Michigan Department of Health & Human Services Director Nick

- An important part of sustaining our resistance work, and enduring the constant influx of news, is practicing self-care and remembering that we are not working alone. This summer, MoveOn.org is hosting Resistance Summer Community Cookouts on June 24th-25th, and July 1st-3rd to help us recharge and connect with others nearby. Let's partake in some fellowship and build momentum in our activism! We can find nearby cookouts, or host one if there isn't a cookout nearby: https://www.resistancesummer.com/event/cookouts/
- Thanks to Postcards for America: June 17 marks the two-year anniversary of the shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC. Let’s send warm thoughts of support to the survivors in care of the church. Details here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JLE5s-tNmwBjqhVUj8QdlFXyoFRArN_JGMOyA0UR4Xw/edit?usp=sharing
- “Leaders from the Southern Baptist Convention were divided over a resolution affirming the denomination’s opposition to white supremacy and the alt-right during their annual meeting in Phoenix this week.” While not an easy process given their history, yesterday, they passed a statement condemning the alt-right. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/06/the-southern-baptist-convention-alt-right-white-supremacy/530244/ Let’s reach out and thank them for taking this stand: http://www.sbc.net/
Learning
- Naomi Klein’s “No is Not Enough” is “one attempt to uncover how we got to this surreal political moment … and it’s a plan for how, if we keep our heads, we might just be able to flip the script and arrive at a radically better future.” We should take a look--https://www.noisnotenough.org/ And we should look as well at The Leap, a recently-formed Canadian organization in which Klein has been instrumental, and its vision of “energy democracy”: https://leapmanifesto.org/en/the-leap-manifesto/
