DEMAND THAT INCARCERATED CHILDREN BE RELEASED *WITH* THEIR FAMILIES, NOT SEPARATED FROM THEM: Once again, Judge Dolly Gee, in light of a significant COVID infestation at two family detention centers has ruled that ICE must release detained children by July 17. However, the order “allows ICE to decline to release a child if there’s not a suitable sponsor or if the parent signs a waiver.” Most parents have chosen to sign waivers, because they do not want to be separated from their children, who, due to a lack of tracking protocols, have often been lost in the system.  thttps://apnews.com/bb44b51b597757ca389b543fc161fbc5. We need to keep advocating for these children by insisting that they and their families be released together. Let’s sign this petition and this petition, and then ask our MoCs to put pressure on ICE to protect the health of these families and to stop separating families

PUTIN’S BOUNTY ON AMERICAN SOLDIERS: As terrible news unfolded over the weekend that Putin has paid Taliban fighters in Afghanistan to kill American soldiers, Trump and the White House have denied that Trump was informed of this by US Intelligence sources.   https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/june-26-2020  However, “Top officials in the White House were aware in early 2019 of classified intelligence indicating Russia was secretly offering bounties to the Taliban for the deaths of Americans, a full year earlier than has been previously reported, according to U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the intelligence.” https://apnews.com/425e43fa0ffdd6e126c5171653ec47d1 As Dan Rather’s News and Guts queried “Imagine wearing the uniform of the United States military, and learning that Russia is paying bounties to Afghan soldiers to kill you. Then you hear that your commander in chief has not only known about this for months and not only done nothing, but has actively courted the Russian president." https://www.newsandguts.com/since-learning-of-russian-bounty-on-u-s-troops-trump-continued-to-court-putin/  There still seems to be no bottom and it becomes clearer that Trump is not serving the interests of the nation of which he is president. Let’s contact our MoC to ask that they demand his resignation and do something to help guarantee our troops’ safety and make Russia accountable.  Let’s also contact Sec. of Defense, Mark Esper: https://www.usa.gov/federal-agencies/u-s-department-of-defense and Sec. of State, Mike Pompeo: https://www.usa.gov/federal-agencies/u-s-department-of-state and ask what they are doing to stand up for our troops.

TRUMP PHONE CALLS:  As if things were not bad enough, even Carl Bernstein, of Watergate fame, is now expressing grave concern about Trump.  "One person familiar with almost all the conversations with the leaders of Russia, Turkey, Canada, Australia and western Europe described the calls cumulatively as 'abominations' so grievous to US national security interests that if members of Congress heard from witnesses to the actual conversations or read the texts and contemporaneous notes, even many senior Republican members would no longer be able to retain confidence in the President."  https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/29/politics/trump-phone-calls-national-security-concerns/index.html  Let’s contact our MoCs to ask what they are doing to ensure our national security.

DEMAND INDEPENDENT OVERSIGHT OF JUSTICE DEPARTMENT: In a rare move, the Senate Judiciary committee voted 21-1 on a bipartisan bill S 685 that would expand Inspector General oversight of the Department of Justice.  https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/504532-senate-panel-votes-21-1-to-back-justice-ig-measure-over-graham-objections. But since Judiciary Chair Lindsay Graham, and Attorney General, William Barr oppose the bill, it’s not clear whether it will be taken up for a vote in the full Senate. Let’s call Majority Leader Moscow Mitch McConnell and demand that he bring this up for a vote and ask our Senators to support this bill and put pressure on the leader to bring it to the Senate floor.

CHILD CARE IS ESSENTIAL: Child care across the U.S. has become increasingly expensive, with quality, licensed child care unattainable for millions of families (https://bit.ly/3i622fc). One of the ways we can improve the system and support families and child care workers is by increasing federal funding for the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) via the Child Care is Essential Act (H.R. 7027/S. 3874). Let's read more about the legislation  here, then contact our MoC in the House and Senate and ask them to support these bills. We can use this tool from MomsRising to get in touch, or we can contact our MoC directly.

HOLD SENATOR SUSAN COLLINS ACCOUNTABLE FOR KAVANAUGH VOTE: While we should celebrate yesterday’s Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision upholding abortion rights it should be noted that justice Brett Kavanaugh voted for the increased restrictions. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), who claims to be pro-choice, told Americans that she voted for Kavanaugh despite his anti-choice positions because he assured her that he would respect legal precedent. However, it was Justice Roberts, who recognized the legal precedent in a Texas case, who voted with the four liberal justices, despite his personal opposition. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-strikes-down-restrictive-louisiana-abortion-law-n1231392. Let’s make sure that Senator Collins (202-224-2523) knows that we will not forgive her for this vote, and let’s donate money to her opponent, or to the Maine People’s Alliance, which will be working to educate Mainers on Senator Collins’s abysmal voting record.

TELL PROCTOR AND GAMBLE TO JOIN JULY FACEBOOK BOYCOTT: Honda, Hersey’s Levi’s, Starbucks, North Face, Patagonia, Ben and Jerry’s and its parent company Unilever and more have joined  the #StopHateForProfit  campaign, to encourage Facebook to stop fostering hate on its platforms. https://www.forbes.com/sites/afdhelaziz/2020/06/24/facebook-ad-boycott-campaign-stop-hate-for-profit-gathers-momentum-and-scale-inside-the-movement-for-change/#2d3986701668  However, Proctor and Gamble, the world biggest advertiser has remained silent. They are, however, currently reviewing their policies of advertising on all platforms, and we can tell them enough is enough.  We can call Proctor and Gamble at (513) 983-1100 to ask they join the “Stop the Hate for Profit” campaign, pausing their advertising until Facebook seriously changes its hate enabling policies. We can also email their CEO David S. Taylor, here: taylor.ds@pg.com

URGENT NEED FOR COVID-19 CONTACT TRACERS:  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield told Congress on Tuesday that the United States has about 28,000 contact tracers, falling short of the 100,000 that are needed to track the spread of coronavirus. Contact tracing often gets less attention than COVID-19 testing but experts say it is also an urgent priority to stem the spread of the disease.  https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/504098-cdc-director-us-has-about-28000-contact-tracers-out-of-100000-needed  Contact your County or State Health Department and apply to be a Covid-19 Contract tracer. Many online classes are offered for free. Ask your county health department which ones they accept. Help stop the spread of Covid-19.

POSTCARDING OPPORTUNITIES:  From one of our own:  Keep reminding yourself: every action, even if it seems small, takes us closer to the justice we're working toward. Fellows receive training in online and in-person organizing. The commitment is 10 hours/week over 12 weeks, plus a virtual 2-day Summer Summit training. Stipend: $2,400. Let’s encourage qualified college students to apply: https://swing-left.breezy.hr/p/5a7b8d7854ee-college-fellow

WANTED: SENIOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPER VOLUNTEER: Vote Forward is looking for “an experienced and motivated volunteer developer to work on the software that will help thousands of volunteers write ten million hand-written letters to voters in time for the November 3rd, 2020, election.” If we’re qualified, let’s apply, and if we’re not, let’s spread the word: https://vote-forward.breezy.hr/p/fff6d1f6a22c

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:  From one of our own:  If you have any unused/used/old/new working iPads please PM me. We recently with help of our Global Challenge Student Ambassadors launched EmpowerandHelp Remote Mentorship Program for children affected by Refugee Crisis. Currently program is teaching 10 students -remotely and as we have enough resources, we will expand it further. Some of these students have missed on 4 years of education straight due to living in camps. And even if they are in Grade 6 as per school, they need basic help.  If we can help, let’s contact Empower and Help:  http://empowerandhelp.com/contact/

REMINDER- CHECK VOTER REGISTRATION STATUS:   Let’s make sure to regularly check our voter registration status. States are purging voters routinely--we don't want to get caught off guard. Take 1 minute and check right now: I Will Vote  Then, let’s check how to vote by mail in our state. Many rules have changed due to the pandemic and we may be able to vote with a mailed ballot. We can find our state's latest voting rules here: How to Vote By Mail in Every State

ELECTIONS TODAY:  Today, June 30 three states have primaries:  Colorado, Oklahoma, and Utah.  If we live there, let’s vote!

VOTE-BY-MAIL POSTCARDING OPPORTUNITY: From Postcards to Voters: "Dems have opened up a 302,000-voter advantage over Republicans in vote-by-mail enrollment, an edge that could pay big dividends in Trump’s newly adopted must-win state," (https://politi.co/2Vf713n). Tens of thousands of volunteers have written to Democrats in all 67 Florida counties to encourage them to enroll in VBM.  Over one million fun, friendly, fully handwritten grassroots postcards have been mailed since we adopted this project in June 2018. We still have more to write and we need more volunteers.  Write as few (or as many) as you want every few days.  We always have addresses of Democrats who are not yet enrolled in FL VBM. Write #PostcardsToVoters with us! Text JOIN to (484) 275-2229 and #MailTheVoteFL

WRITE LETTERS TO VOTERS: Vote Forward is working on an initiative called “The Big Send,” which involve writing letters to voters to encourage them to vote this November. Two million letters have been written so far! It’s fun to sign up to write letters ourselves, but a virtual letter writing party is even better, so they’ve put together a party kit. Let’s get some friends together and start writing letters! The party kit is here:  https://bit.ly/3g9m0nG

CALLING COLORADO POSTCARDERS TO FLIP FLORIDA: Colorado-based Blue Wave Postcard Movement is sending postcards to Florida Democrats to urge them to register to vote by mail. They’re working on other key states, too! If we’re in CO, let’s sign up and start writing: https://www.bluewavepostcards.org/home

ELECTION PROTECTION: The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law https://www.lawyerscommittee.org/mission/ runs an initiative called Election Protection to defend our right to vote https://866ourvote.org/. Whether we need help ourselves in exercising our right to vote or we wish to volunteer and protect the voting rights of others, Election Protection is a great resource. Let’s:
  • Add the Voter Hotline number to our cell phone contacts lists
    • English 866-687-8683
    • Spanish 888-839-8682
    • Asian Languages 888-274-8683

GET A FREE ACTIVIST 101 WEBINAR FOR OUR GROUPS: If we are terrified about where our country is, desperate to get it someplace better, but unsure how to start, Jessica Craven, of Chop  Wood, Carry Water  https://www.facebook.com/ChopCarry/ has a Zoom webinar just for us! In over 60 minutes, we will get an overview of several easy ways we can help flip the presidency, the Senate, and a bunch more seats, and leave the GOP a pile of smoking rubble in November. We will also learn how the tiny bit that we do matters so much. All we need to do is put together a group, give her a time, and she’ll be there with slide deck and a handy google doc to give us at the end.  To set up a free, one hour Activism 101 Webinar for our group, we can contact Jessica Craven here: cwcwdailyactions@gmail.com

FLIP THE SENATE, SAVE THE WORLD ON JULY 2:  Given the current political momentum, there’s a real chance that Democrats can retake the Senate in November. We are invited to a Zoom conversation and (bring our own) cocktails event with Senator Cory Booker and two of the brightest lights and biggest hopes for flipping Senate seats: Jaime Harrison and Governor Steve Bullock. The event will take place on July 2, at 8p (ET)/5p (PT). We can participate even while making dinner, in our sweats (no one will see us), and we may get our questions answered.  It’s free to RSVP, but of course the goal is to raise buckets of money for great candidates  RSVP HERE or if we would like to attend without making a contribution, email Brynn DiNino at brynn@corybooker.com to RSVP.  If we can’t attend, we can DONATE HERE.

MY BLACK RECEIPT:  My Black Receipt builds on the protests that are happening now addressing police brutality and the mistreatment of black people in the U.S. Part of this mistreatment comes from how wealth has been distributed historically in the US.  My Black Receipt will redistribute wealth to the black community by supporting black businesses. Over one month starting on Friday, June 19, My Black Receipt will focus on a different business sector each week and ask everyone to support black businesses in all their purchases in that sector. Let’s support this protest and help amplify the message through social media on June 19 through July 4, using the hashtag #MyBlackReceipt and on Instagram: Official Black Wall Street.

GET TRAINED TO VOLUNTEER VIRTUALLY FOR BIDEN: The upcoming 2020 Presidential Election will be crucial in deciding the fate of our country and our democracy. After 2016, we know we cannot be complacent, but must do everything possible to defeat Trump and get our country back on track. One way to start is to help Joe Biden's campaign which is looking for volunteers right now. We can click here to join an Action Center trainings (which will be offered 75 times between May 27 and November 1) and learn how to use our online organizing hub to volunteer virtually for Joe:  https://www.mobilize.us/joebiden/event/149561

On Mondays, Rogan’s List features a listing of proposed rule and regulation changes that are currently accepting public comment.  Commenting is the way to show government agencies how we feel about these proposed changes. Our comments also become part of a record that will be reviewed by courts if and when a reg change is contested. Courts use comments to judge whether an agency is acting arbitrarily and capriciously.

    Organization

Closing Soon
Recent
Section I - ICE, DHS, DOL, NLRB
Section II - everything environmental - EPA, BLM, DOE
Section III - Civil rights, housing, education, healthcare
Other: More on regulations (tracking the trackers/general information)

(Note: After a couple of weeks items are moved from “Recent” and “Closing soon” into the Roman numeral sections. A note on regulatory processes: there are three stages - Notice, Proposed Rule, and Rule. There’s usually a time lag of a few months to a few years between them, and they must be published in the Federal Register before appearing on Regulations.gov. Comment time varies from 10 days to 2 months, sometimes with extensions.)

New executive orders all but banning immigration altogether - legal and undocumented, with the new visa ban and credible-fear asylum restrictions. Also, proposal from Bureau of Land Management to drill 2/3 of Arctic reserve and an excellent article from Bloomberg Law on why BLM is anything but transparent with regard to proposals or posting comments (it often doesn't).   And from Stanford Law it's impacts on indigenous people. It's a land grab. Coupled with Trump's suspension of NEPA would be a disaster if not for all the lawsuits. Using a new computer with a different version of word so it messed up the formatting and have corrected somewhat but that's why it's weirder than usual.

ENDING ASYLYUM:  Last week the Trump administration announced its plans to END asylum in the United States. The proposed regulation would apply to people seeking asylum at the border AND those who come to the US on a visa and seek asylum. Worse, this regulation may even apply to people who have already applied for asylum. This could impact thousands.  The period for making a public comment in opposition to this inhumane regulation is only open through JULY 15. https://thehill.com/opinion/immigration/502881-the-end-of-asylum-for-now  Let’s use this information from the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP):  https://ilapmaine.org/ilap-news/2020/protect-asylum, and then leave a comment here: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/06/15/2020-12575/procedures-for-asylum-and-withholding-of-removal-credible-fear-and-reasonable-fear-review?fbclid=IwAR1M4Xa5Xn5dcUY2-l0ek4bD0GflGjtR2R8AH9LULs_XzTUGoXYrYOs4tuc

FEDERAL FUNDING FOR COVID TESTING: We all know Trump’s fear of COVID-positive numbers and his flawed reasoning that with less testing the national numbers would be lower.  We were reassured by Dr. Anthony’s Fauci’s Congressional testimony this week that, in fact, testing will be expanded.  https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/fauci-says-u-s-will-expand-testing-not-slow-it-n1231877  However, concern heightened yesterday with the report that federal funding for “13 coronavirus testing sites, which are currently located in five states: Illinois, New Jersey, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Texas” will soon end.  https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/24/coronavirus-federal-government-to-end-funding-some-covid-19-test-sites.html  This came on the same day that “across the United States, more than 36,000 new infections were reported by state health departments on Wednesday — surpassing the previous single-day record of 34,203 set on April 25.”   https://politicalwire.com/2020/06/24/u-s-coronavirus-cases-hit-new-daily-high/  As Chuck Schumer tweeted: “The admin has $14 billion for testing and tracing that they haven’t spent. But President Trump thinks the right move is to pull federal support for testing out of hotspot areas!?”  While it appears that states will take over these testing sites, let’s make sure that our MoCs know that we want the federal government to use these funds to assist states which are already so over-burdened by COVID.

PROTEST DEPORTATION AIRLINE BAILOUT: While most of the major passenger airlines are struggling during the pandemic, Omni Air’s business is booming because it specializes in “high-risk” deportations for the Department of Homeland Security. Nevertheless, the airline received $67 million of taxpayer dollars in coronavirus bailout funds. https://news.yahoo.com/deportation-airline-secures-67-million-in-coronavirus-bailout-161219076.html. The company’s parent group, ATSG, has been a major donor to the Republican party. Let’s protest this unethical and unnecessary bailout to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin (202-622-2000; 1500 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20220; Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ustreasury/; Twitter: @stevenmnuchin1) and also ask our MoCs to investigate this and similar breaches of ethics.

PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS THREATENED: Public health officials are being driven from their posts amid increasing online attacks—and in the midst of a pandemic, when we need them more than ever.  “A review by Kaiser Health News and The Associated Press,” the NY Times reports, “finds at least 27 state and local health leaders have resigned, retired or been fired since April across 13 states”: https://khn.org/news/public-health-officials-face-wave-of-threats-pressure-amid-coronavirus-response/ or  https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2020/06/12/us/ap-us-virus-outbreak-invisible-army.html  While we cannot protect them from harm, we can make our support of public health officials clear by contacting Lori Tremmel Freeman, CEO of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) at 202-507-4271 or 1201 Eye Street, NW, 4th Floor, Washington, DC 20005 and by urging our state or county public health agencies to see that these “essential” workers have whatever they need to stay safe.  We can also counter the hateful messages directed at public health officials on Facebook and other social media on those same platforms.

JUSTICE FOR BREONNA TAYLOR:  It took three months, but the officer who shot Breonna Taylor was fired.  https://apnews.com/175f81ff1598e248da77180a84254493  It does not seem enough for the senseless death of an innocent young woman in her own home.  It is time for legal action.  Let’s all use some of the options for action here:  https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/breonna-taylor-demand-justice-1015060/

PROTESTOR SAFETY: As people across the U.S. protest systemic racism and police violence against Black people, police are using tear gas, a chemical weapon that is banned in warfare, as a means of crowd control. The aerosolized chemical is not only damaging to the human body in its own right, but even more so as we face a pandemic that is attacking people's respiratory systems (https://bit.ly/2YvqsH6https://nyti.ms/2B6vFwb). Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mark Takano, Pramila Jayapal, and Chuy Garcia have introduced a bill (H.R. 7221) "To prohibit law enforcement officers from using chemical weapons in the course of policing activities." Let's contact our representatives in the House and ask them to cosponsor and support this bill.

SYSTEMIC RACISM/POLICING IN SCHOOLS: One of the ways that the U.S. perpetuates the school-to-prison pipeline is via policing in schools (https://n.pr/381pKof). The presence of police in schools has been shown to criminalize the behavior of and disproportionately affect black children and students with disabilitiesLet's use this resource from The Firecracker Foundation to learn about how we can achieve police-free schools, what the alternate solutions are to school resource officers, and how we can more effectively address behavioral issues inside schools. Then let's use the templates available to send letters, emails, and tweets to our local, state, and federal officials.

STATE/LOCAL

ALL: DEMAND THE RELEASE OF IMMIGRANT DETAINEES: A letter signed by 100 immigrants in detention in Florida, to a federal judge in response to a lawsuit, which  was recently released to the public  states, please come see us immediately or send investigators” because “we were served spoiled food, we’re starving, bathrooms are bad, violations of rights… beds are two feet apart and not six feet apart.” Immigrants also allege that COVID positive patients aren’t separated from COVID-negative inmates, further contributing to the spread of the disease. ICE’s response to these accusations acknowledges that they have totally failed to keep people safe. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/immigration/article243736647.html  The problem is even worse in private prisons run by organizations like GEO Group and Core Civic. https://www.sacurrent.com/the-daily/archives/2020/06/22/members-of-congress-blast-treatment-of-immigrants-in-private-detention-sites-near-san-antonio?utm. Let’s make sure to let our municipal officials, sheriffs, and governor know that these violations are common and widespread and ask them to release detainees.

ALL: FIND HOW MUCH OF OUR CITIES’’ BUDGET GOES TOWARDS POLICING
As we look into reforming or defunding our police departments, it’s useful, and sometimes quite surprising, to know how much of our cities’ resources are currently used to fund the police. Action Center on Race and the Economy (ACRE) has built a police budgets calculator tool that breaks down the police budget in 300 US cities. We can click here to find what percentage of our cities’ budget goes to the police, then use and share this information to demand more equitable use of our resources from our local governments. https://costofpolice.org

CA: ASK STATE SENATORS TO PASS CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM AND VOTING RIGHTS BILLS: Two important bills for criminal justice reform and voting rights are coming up soon, AB 2054, the CRISES Act, which would fund community alternatives to police crisis response, http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB2054  and ACA 6, the Free the Vote Act, which would restore the right to vote for people on parole. https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200ACA6 We can read more about them here, then can call our State Senators and ask them to support criminal justice reform bill AB 2054, the CRISES Act, and ACA 6, the Free the Vote Act, restoring parolees’ right to vote.

VOLUNTEER TO ADOPT A BATTLEGROUND STATE FOR 2020 VICTORY: The election may hinge on six key states and a Vote Save America has just launched a strategy to win them.  The Adopt a State Program is brand-new remote mobilization program that will help us directly support the work of organizers and candidates in these six key battleground states that will be most important to winning a progressive majority on Election Day—no matter where we live. After months working with the most effective state parties, political strategists, and progressive organizations on the ground in Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin to find out where we can help the most, they will only send us actions that will make a real impact. We’ll get first rate training to become part of the best group of digital organizers out there. This custom live training series will include four sessions on Thursday evenings in June, curated to help make us the most effective organizers we can be. When we sign up, we’ll learn the messaging that works best, and the remote and in-person opportunities that will help us make the biggest possible impact on the outcome of its races:  https://votesaveamerica.com/subscribe/

LEARN TO WRITE AN OP-ED: "In this hour-long webinar, we’ll look at some letters that hit the mark and others that miss it. We’ll talk about word-length, finding your newspaper/audience, developing a relationship with an editor and how to time your letters. Mostly, though, the focus will be on the writing itself, the tone, the message. Every story coming out of Washington these days is an opportunity to respond as a Democrat. Every letter we write could mean another American abroad voting in November." This is a workshop designed for Democrats Abroad, but is useful for anyone who wants to help remotely. We can RSVP here for the Saturday, June 27 (2-3 pm, EDT) event: https://bit.ly/37W6WXx

AVOID OVERTURNING RECENT SUPREME COURT DACA DECISION: While we can certainly celebrate the Supreme Court’s decision upholding DACA, the basis for the decision was on *how* the program was terminated, not the merits of the program itself. The Trump administration has already indicated that they will resubmit paperwork in an attempt to prove that the decision to rescind DACA was done with “adequate justification.” https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/503545-trump-signals-he-will-submit-new-paperwork-on-daca-after-supreme. In order to fully protect Dreamers, we need Congress to act. Let’s make sure our MoCs know that a recent poll determined that 74% of Americans support DACA protections and ask them to prioritize passing DACA legislation before this decision faces reconsideration.

IMPEACH BARR: Over the weekend, after the effort of Attorney General Barr to fire U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of NY Geoffrey Berman, House Judiciary Committee Chairman said that although Barr should be impeached, it is a “waste of time” given the corruption of the Senate: https://www.npr.org/2020/06/21/881437223/house-judiciary-chair-says-barr-should-be-impeached-but-wont-be  Let’s be in touch with Chairman Nadler and our own MoC to say that Barr has made multiple impeachable moves, that standing up for the values and Constitution of the United States must never be viewed as a waste of time, and that rolling over does nothing to fight corruption:  https://nadler.house.gov/contact/  We can also sign here, call our MoCs and let them know enough is enough: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/tell-congress-impeach-bill-barr

VOTING BY MAIL IN DANGER:  The postal service is the only government agency expected to fund itself, through the sale of stamps, money orders, and other services, and it only is expected to set aside enough cash to cover the cost of post-retirement health benefits for its workers; the PO delivers medicine, food, PPE, and household necessities to every address in the US, rural, urban, or remote—even though it threatens to run out of money in September, just in time for November’s election. Trump has blocked distribution of the millions earmarked for the PO in the CARE Act and insisted, without evidence, that voting by mail results in fraud: https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/15/politics/postal-service-new-director/index.html  and https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/04/why-postal-service-worth-saving/610672/ We need to fight for our ability to vote safely by mail in the fall, given that we can have no knowledge of the coronavirus’s future behavior.  Let’s call our MoCs and demand funding for USPS.

FIND OUR STATES CURRENT INFECTION RATES:  How is reopening affecting our infections? Who’s up and who’s down? First wave?  Second wave?  https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/22/us-coronavirus-spikes-first-wave-not-over  Rt is a key measure of how fast the virus is growing. It’s the average number of people who become infected by an infectious person. If Rt is above 1.0, the virus will spread quickly. When Rt is below 1.0, the virus will stop spreading.” We can check each states’ up-to-date infection rate here: https://rt.live/  Let’s share this information to help us all keep safe.

PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS THREATENED: “Public health workers, already  underfunded and understaffed, are confronting waves of protest at their homes and offices in addition to pressure from politicians who favor a faster reopening. Lori Tremmel Freeman, chief executive of the National Association of County and City Health Officials, said more than 20 health officials have been fired, resigned or have retired in recent weeks “due to conditions related to having to enforce and stand up for strong public health tactics during this pandemic.”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/amid-threats-and-political-pushback-public-health-officials-leaving-posts/2020/06/22/6075f7a2-b0cf-11ea-856d-5054296735e5_story.html  or   https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/amid-threats-and-political-pushback-public-health-officials-are-leaving-their-posts/ar-BB15Q3Ip  Let’s send a note of thanks and support to our own county and state health officials. Please let them know you appreciate good science and restrictions to save lives during the pandemic. Let’s also tell our MOCs to encourage a slower opening of our country, support of face masks, hand washing, and social distancing.

POLITICAL PRESSURE TO APPROVE COVID-19 VACCINE:  It would seem that in addition to not knowing that Finland is a country or that the UK has the bomb, as John Bolton has asserted, Trump also knows nothing about the AIDS epidemic; a week ago, he insisted not just that US scientists are “the best, the smartest, the most brilliant anywhere” (except, of course, those at the CDC who are "terrible") but also that ‘they’ve come up with the Aids vaccine”—a vaccine that does not yet exist. Given his stunning ignorance and his unbridled desire to win in November, we should be very worried about whether the FDA will come under tremendous political pressure to approve the COVID-19 vaccine his seriously mismanaged Operation Warp Speed seeks: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/22/trump-circle-pressure-fda-rush-covid-19-vaccine-election or https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/06/17/trump-coronavirus-vaccine/  Let’s make it clear to the FDA that we want a safe, thoroughly tested, and effective vaccine, not a fast one: FDA Investigational Biologics,  240-402-8020 or 800-835-4709 or industry.biologics@fda.hhs.gov

DEMAND CONSISTENT HEALTH-CENTERED (NOT TRUMP-CENTERED) MESSAGING ON SAFETY PRECAUTIONS DURING PANDEMIC: While nothing should surprise us about Trump’s continually despicable and outrageous behavior, his leadership during the pandemic has sunk to new unimaginable lows. Trump had the audacity to ignore the warnings of health experts, and the strong requests of city officials, and persist in holding a campaign rally with several thousand people in Tulsa, a place where cases a rising, in an indoor space with no requirements for masks or social distancing. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/inside-trump-s-tulsa-rally-no-distancing-few-masks-plenty-n1231654. Clearly, Trump would sacrifice the health of every American at the rally and all they might come into contact with in order to get re-elected. This is beyond immoral. In fact, Trump even went farther in suggesting that if we slowed down testing, we’d have fewer cases, meaning he wouldn’t look as bad, even if it meant that more people would die. https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/trump-suggests-us-slow-virus-testing-to-avoid-bad-statistics/2476198/. Let’s demand that all representatives in our government (local, state, and federal) provide consistent, health-centered information on how to protect ourselves and others during the COVID pandemic, and publicly censure the Trump administration’s callous, unscientific, and immoral actions in letters to the editor and on social media.

MARTIN GUGINO: “Gugino remains in hospital due to the serious head injury he received at the hands of Buffalo police. Daloisio says that although he has left the ICU, he sustained a brain injury, and “it’s not clear what long-term effects that will have”.”  https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/14/martin-gugino-buffalo-police-catholic-worker Let’s send him well-wishes in care of his attorney:  Kelly Zarcone, Lipman & Zarcone PLLC, New York Office, 5500 Main Street, Suite 201, Williamsville, NY 14221

D.C. STATEHOOD: This week, the House is expected to vote on legislation (H.R. 51) that would admit Washington D.C. as a state, enabling voting and representation for the capitol city's over 700,000 residents (https://cbsn.ws/3eouirh). While the bill is expected to pass the House, there are concerns that it will be blocked in the Senate. Let's learn more about D.C. statehood, then contact our MoC in both the House and Senate and ask them to support H.R. 51: Washington, D.C. Admission Act.

STOP HATE FOR PROFIT: For years, Facebook, fueled by $70B in ad revenue from corporations, has refused to take responsibility for hate, bias, and discrimination growing on their platforms. This July, a coalition of organizations including the Anti-Defamation LeagueColor of ChangeSleeping GiantsNAACPCommon Sense Media, and Free Press is asking that businesses stop all advertising on Facebook to pressure the company to address hate on the social media platform (https://bit.ly/2VaLQzE). Three general recommendations include: 1) Provide more support to people who are targets of racism, antisemitism, and hate, 2) Stop generating ad revenue from misinformation and harmful content, and 3) Increase safety in private groups on Facebook. Each recommendation has specific actions that can be taken to achieve each goal. Users and advertisers demand that Facebook address racism across their platforms. North Face, Patagonia and several more companies are pulling July ads while FB encourages the spread of hate. We can learn more, join in, and ask more companies to sign on too: https://www.stophateforprofit.org/hit-pause-on-hate

JUNETEENTH ACTIONS/VIGILS/PROTESTS: Juneteenth celebrations were held all over the country.  https://thehill.com/homenews/politics-101/503538-what-is-juneteenth If we attended a Juneteenth event, let’s take a moment to thank the organizers and follow-through on any suggested action items from the event.

CALL FOR COVID STORIES:  The National Writers Series is a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging world renowned authors in meaningful conversation.  They are seeking writing submissions from children and adults about living in a COVID world.  “What we want is what you feel today as the story is swirling around you like you are standing in Lake Michigan. You have your space, the news is a blizzard, your friends are doing one thing, your family is doing another, and your brain and your eyes are working overtime… What are you seeing, what are you thinking.  What would you like your children to know about this, and how they should live through this experience, if it happens to them years from now?”  https://lifeinthetimeofvirus.org/  Let’s share our stories!

POSTCARDING OPPORTUNITIES:  From one of our own:  Please use/share/distribute as you see fit. Thank you for all you do—extra thanks if you use any of the material I provide. I'm writing it for you! And take a moment to reflect on all the times you've spoken out over the last 3+ years. You are heroes!  Here’s this week’s list:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iG5vZeXr8jctOvrp7ckreP0Srm2ELEzw5FnS58rI1pw/edit  Let’s write!

ELECTION/VOTING

2020 ELECTION CALENDAR: This resource is searchable by date and state -  https://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/2020-state-primary-election-dates.aspx

SIX STATES HAVE ELECTIONS TODAY:  Kentucky, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia have elections today. https://www.rollcall.com/2020/06/22/6-things-to-watch-in-tuesdays-primaries-7/   If we are in these states, we need to VOTE and get out the vote!

KY: VOTE IN THE PRIMARY: This voter guide for Kentucky's June 23rd primary election also shows exactly how voter suppression works: by making it as hard as possible for people to vote. https://www.kentucky.com/news/politics-government/article243541377.html. Under the guise of conforming to health and safety guidelines, Kentucky officials have drastically reduced the number of polling places on Election Day from 3700 to less than 200. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/kentucky-cuts-polling-locations-angry-mob-long-lines-georgia-election-day-disaster-confusion-a9577501.html Those who were unable to request a mail-in ballot in time will need to find their polling place. Beware: many of them close at 4 p.m. Here's how to find our polling location:  https://www.sos.ky.gov/elections/Pages/Polling-Locations.aspx   If we have already voted, we can check the status of our mail in ballot here: https://vrsws.sos.ky.gov/vic/ if we live in Louisville, we can vote in person at The Fairgrounds from 6-6 or if we have an absentee ballot, we can drop it off at 701 Ormsby in the dropbox or at the Fairgrounds. Mail in ballots must be postmarked by 6/23. Here are all Louisville post office closing times with last time for postmarking. (Gardiner Lane is the very last one, 9pm 6/23)  https://bit.ly/Louisvillepostoffice  If we have more questions about voting in Jefferson County, we can read this: https://louisvilledems.com/faq-voting-getting-your-ballot-june-23-election-for-jefferson-county/ Finally, if there are any issues with voting, we can call the voter protection hotline: 833-468-6835

POSTCARDING TO FLORIDA FOR VOTE BY MAIL:  The Postcards to Voters' campaign to reach every registered Democrat in Florida to sign up for vote by mail continues. With over 17,000 addresses assigned by ABBY the address bot the other day, volunteers are making short work of each of the counties as they are loaded. Leader Tony the Democrat has stopped trying to keep up with announcements and has promised volunteers that we still have plenty of Democrats to reach. Let's request 5 addresses today for one of the open campaigns.

WI:  AS GOES WISCONSIN:As Goes Wisconsin empowers Wisconsinites to embrace how much their vote matters.  Our goal is to reach and inform Wisconsin voters to be more educated parts of the electorate and more motivated to head to the polls on election day….and to make them laugh in the process.”  Kristin Brey’s funny, but informative episodes are just what this election needs: https://asgoeswisconsin.com/episodes Let’s watch and listen!

STATE/LOCAL

ALL:  PROTESTOR SAFETY: According to a 2017 study, 3% of people hit by rubber bullets die, while approximately 15% suffer permanent injury (https://bit.ly/3dnLBaD).  At protests across the U.S., police have been seen both shooting rubber bullets indiscriminately into crowds and targeting civilians at point blank range, with activists, children, journalists, and photographers among those being injured.  After the 2017 study was published, Physicians for Human Rights noted the damage that can be sustained from rubber bullets, and called on them to be "prohibited in the context of protests," (https://bit.ly/2V4DnO8). Let's contact our local mayors and city council members and tell them we agree with health experts and want police to stop using rubber bullets during protests. We can also contact our MoC and tell them that we want rubber bullets to be banned for crowd control at the federal level as well. Finally, let's be sure to read through and share this resource from Teen Vogue, which details what to do if we get hit with a rubber bullet.
