Many newspapers, including New York Times and Washington Post require subscriptions, but without one we can see a few articles each month.  We can also check with our local libraries to find out how to get online access through them.

1.      Senate Democrats, who spent weeks thinking they would won (sic) the fight to keep the Affordable Care Act in place, are mobilizing alongside progressive activists for 11 more days on the defensive. "They’re going to hear from us one more time!” Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said at a Tuesday afternoon rally outside the Capitol. “Protesting, picketing, emailing — you name it!”   https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/democrats-ask-base-for-one-more-aca-rescue-mission/2017/09/19/d9b1a94a-9d72-11e7-8ea1-ed975285475e_story.html?utm_term=.df74bfa94453  Let's do it, one more time, CALL, TWEET, EMAIL, VISIT OFFICES, SEND POSTCARDS.  We can knock this ball out of the park !!! In addition to our own Republican senators, let’s target these perhaps swayable others: 1)  Murkowski (202) 224-6665, 2) Collins (202)224-2523, 3)  Capito (202)224-6472, 4)  McCain (202)224-2235, 5)  Portman (202)224-3353, and 6)  Heller (202)224-6244

2.      Three blatantly anti-union, anti-worker bills are currently before the House:  H.R. 986 would take away workers’ rights if they work at tribal casinos or on any part of tribal land, no matter their job; H.R. 2776 would give employers the right to set the date for union representation elections, enabling them to postpone these votes for months at a time; H.R. 2775 would cut off workers' access to key information before an election, denying workers the opportunity to make an informed decision about joining a union. The Communication Workers of America has created a tool enabling us to easily tell our Reps what we think about these politically-motivated attacks on workers’ rights: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/tell-your-member-of-congress-to-stop-the-attack-on-workers

3.      The GOP is trying to push through the Graham-Cassidy bill, even though the CBO has announced that it will not be able to provide its full analysis and score before September 30th http://bit.ly/2hfMoPL As we make calls to members of Congress, let's make sure we point out that it is reckless, irresponsible, and not in following "regular order" to vote on a bill before the CBO score is released. Senator McCain in particular may need a reminder that it was he who pointed out the importance of Congress returning to regular order:  http://n.pr/2uwx1u7 Phone: (202) 224-2235

4.      "In a sharp departure from his predecessors, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price last week took private jets on five separate flights for official business, at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars more than commercial travel. Price, a frequent critic of federal spending who has been developing a plan for departmentwide cost savings, declined to comment." This breaks with the tradition of previous secretaries who flew commercially in the USA.  http://www.politico.com/story/2017/09/19/tom-price-chartered-planes-flights-242908 Let’s let Secretary Price know that we see his hypocrisy:https://www.hhs.gov/about/contact-us/index.html

5.      From one of our own:  Please call Susan Collins (https://www.collins.senate.gov/contact), Lisa Murkowski (https://www.murkowski.senate.gov/contact/email), and John McCain https://www.mccain.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/contact-form) and ask them to again vote NO on repeal of the ACA. In a NY Times Opinion article today (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/19/opinion/mccain-healthcare-graham-cassidy.html) by David Leonhardt, he states the phones have been quiet. I called yesterday and talked to a person in Collins office and left messages for the other 2. The article also says McCain voted no mostly because the process used " violated everything he believes about how the senate should function". The process being used this time is similar. The new bill has more money for Alaska and Maine so I just emphasized how their vote affects millions of people nationwide. Thanks.

6.      Because it does not fit their nationalist agenda, The White House is rejecting the findings of a government study that refugees have a positive effect on our economy:https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/18/us/politics/refugees-revenue-cost-report-trump.html Let’s let Stephen Miller know that he does not get to pick and choose which evidence he believes: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington DC 20500

7.      Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach on Tuesday defended his use of a personal email address to conduct business in his role as vice chairman of President Trump's voter fraud commission, saying that using his Kansas state email would be a "waste of state resources." Because Kobach is using a personal email instead of a government account, the emails are not subject to public records requests unless copied or sent to a government account. According to ProPublica, in order for members of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity to comply with federal records retention laws, they must either use government email accounts, copy a government account on messages sent from a private account or send messages from their private accounts to a government account within 20 days."  http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/351414-kobach-defends-use-of-private-email-for-voter-fraud-commission  Contact Kobach tweet @KrisKobach1787, write to Kansas Secretary of State, Memorial Hall, 1st Floor, 120 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66612-1594 or call (785) 296-4561.  Let’s contact the White House, too:  https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact

8.      If we have not yet seen Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue Tuesday night about the Graham-Cassidy bill and the ways Senator Cassidy lied to him, it is worth the watch (imbedded in article): http://www.politico.com/story/2017/09/20/jimmy-kimmel-bill-cassidy-obamacare-242913 Then, let’s call as many Republican senators to say that there is no place in our society for the harm of this bill.

9.      The House is expected to vote on legislation deregulating the sale of firearm silencers, over the objections of law enforcement and at risk to public safety, before the end of the month (http://www.politico.com/story/2017/09/13/gun-silencers-congress-republicans-242673). Let’s make sure we contact our members of Congress and tell them to oppose H.R. 3668. We can also sign this petition to Congress from Americans for Responsible Solutions opposing this bill at this link.
State Actions

1.      SD:  State Representative Lynne DiSanto (R), the GOP Whip, has already apologized for posting an anti-protest meme "all lives splatter." Above the meme, DiSanto had written her own comment: “I think this is a movement we can all support.” Her excuse shows her lack of understanding of First Amendments rights of peaceful assembly, "I perceived it as encouraging people to stay out of the street.”  Per the Rapid City Journal, DiSanto has already been dropped as speaker at a local event and has lost her position with a real estate company.   She needs to hear from us, especially if we are her constituents.  We need to help her understand how mistaken she was: Lynne DiSanto, 22739A Rando Ct, Box Elder SD 57719.  Perhaps DiSanto is not the right person to be the majority Whip. We can also contact: SD Republican Party, Chairman Dan Lederman, PO Box 1099, Pierre SD 57501.

2.      NY: "Teamsters Joint Council 16, with 27 affiliate local unions representing 120,000 workers in the New York City area, has declared itself a so-called sanctuary union after the deportation of one of its members."  We can read this Moyers&company interview with George Miranda, the President of Joint Council 16.  We can send "thank you's" and notes of support to: George Miranda, Pres. of Joint Council 16, c/o Teamsters, 25 Louisiana Ave NW, Washington DC 20001

3.      SD "State Rep. Lynne DiSanto, R-Box Elder, was criticized by the state Democratic Party and others Tuesday and lost her position at a real estate firm after she made a post to Facebook that joked about striking protesters with a vehicle. The post consisted of a drawing of an SUV mowing down stick-figure people, plus three lines of text: “All Lives Splatter,” “Nobody cares about your protest” and “Keep your (expletive) out of the road.” Above the meme, DiSanto wrote her own comment: “I think this is a movement we can all support.” She added the hashtag “alllivessplatter” — a play on the slogan "All Lives Matter," which arose in response to the Black Lives Matter movement — to make the post appear with other similar posts on Facebook." She lost her job so we know she worked for a responsible employer.  http://rapidcityjournal.com/news/local/update-firm-drops-rep-disanto-over-facebook-post/article_314a46a6-20a4-5af6-9f1b-1e2c6a6ec145.html Now, her constituents need to VOTE HER OUT. Please let your friends and family in South Dakota know about her despicable actions.

Other Actions

1.      “… Trump is using money donated to his re-election campaign and the Republican National Committee to pay for his lawyers in the probe of alleged Russian interference in the U.S. election, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters.”  https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-lawyers-exclusive/trump-using-campaign-rnc-funds-to-pay-legal-bills-from-russia-probe-sources-idUSKCN1BU2OS  Let’s contact the Office of Government Ethics and ask them to issue a statement about this: https://www.oge.gov/web/oge.nsf/Organization/Contact%20Us  Let’s also contact the Federal Election Commission and ask them to do the same: https://www.fec.gov/contact-us/

2.      Live in a blue state? Want to do more to help defeat the terrible Graham-Cassidy bill? The Indivisible Team has a fantastic tool for us right here: https://www.trumpcareten.org/calls-to-kill-trumpcare. Sign up here to call up "persuadable Republicans" who live in swing states and get them to help us stop the Republicans in the Senate from forcing this down our throats. As Indivisible says: "It’s super easy: more than 1,000 Indivisibles in blue states made 100,000 phone calls to constituents in our target states in the final two days before the healthcare vote in July. And we won. We can win this time, too."

3.      Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) and the L4GG Foundation are working with immigration groups all over the country to match volunteer lawyers with nearly DACA renewal clinics in need of volunteers.  The list of clinic volunteer opportunities available on this page is being constantly updated, so if we don't find an event near us when we search, we can check again in a day or twoOnce we find an event near us, click through to read the event details and RSVP to let the clinic organizer know that you'd like to volunteer.

4.      United We Dream has created a DACA Renewal Fund to help cover the fees for qualified DREAMers who need to renew their DACA status by the October 5th deadline http://bit.ly/2wHs2Vq The renewal fee is $495 per person, and there are approximately 154,000 individuals who qualify. For those of us with the means, let's consider contributing to this cause: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/renewalfund/

5.      The Nebraska State Board of Education approved new science standards, which will add climate change to the curriculum http://bit.ly/2wyDmYB While this is great news, it also serves as an important reminder of how critical it is to pay attention to local and state elections to ensure that we are electing the best candidates for each position.

6.      As Ken Burns has once again reminded us, John McNaughton, Asst Secretary of Defense in 1965, claimed that 70% of our aim in bombarding Vietnam was “to avoid a humiliating US defeat.” We know all too well that LBJ didn’t like to lose--and neither does Trump!  Which makes his taunting threat to “totally destroy” North Korea at the UN on Tuesday and his slightly more veiled threat to pull out of the Iran agreement all the more frightening to those of us who want peace and diplomacy: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/19/donald-trump-threatens-totally-destroy-north-korea-un-speech  Trump must certify Iranian compliance with the agreement or not by October 15.  Win Without War is urging us to write letters to the editor of our local papers and has provided an easy tool for doing so: http://act.winwithoutwar.org/lte/Iran_UNGA/  Vocal opposition to the war in Vietnam started slowly—and too late; let’s not make the same mistake again in relation to Iran or North Korea.

7.      “The Committee to Investigate Russia is a nonprofit, non-partisan resource provided to help Americans recognize and understand the gravity of Russia’s continuing attacks on our democracy. All relevant information is aggregated in one place to provide context and allow users to see the full picture of what Russia has done and will continue to do unless we start paying closer attention.”  Let’s check out this new source:  https://investigaterussia.org/

8.      The House and Senate members are back home until Monday, Sept. 25.  Let’s check with Town Hall Project to find a town hall and also to sign up for alerts when something is scheduled to happen in our zip code are:  https://townhallproject.com/

9.      "In a very pointed message, international charity Oxfam invited four refugees from three countries to spend the day at the Queens, N.Y., home where Trump spent his earliest years." as reported by NPR. "The Airbnb listing has since been removed from the website for unknown reasons."  We appreciate Oxfam's symbolic action. Let's check out Oxfam's website and follow their activities on Facebook if we are not already.  If we are able, let's donate to their causes.

Petitions

1.      Let’s sign this petition demanding that Equifax identify and inform all customers who were impacted by this massive data breach:  http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/690/852/562/

2.      Let’s add our names to our petition by Free Speech People, and demand a Constitutional Amendment to reverse Citizens United, get corporate money out of politics, and restore democracy to the people:  http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/7003/p/salsa/web/common/public/signup

Marches/events/teleconferences to attend/organize

1.      With the theme of “Reclaiming Our Time” the Women’s March Women’s Convention will be held in Detroit on Oct. 27-29.  We can learn more about the convention and register here: http://www.womensconvention.com/

 Reading/Watching

1.      GOP senators are rushing to pass Graham-Cassidy. We asked 9 to explain what it does -- https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/9/20/16333876/republican-senators-graham-cassidy

2.      Uninsured Rate Falls To Record Low Of 8.8% -- http://khn.org/news/uninsured-rate-falls-to-a-record-low-of-8-8-percent/

3.      Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that President Trump called him last week to apologize for the bloody fight between Erdoğan’s security and protestors in D.C in May. A grand jury indicted 19 defendants last month in the brawl that took place outside the Turkish embassy, including 15 Turkish security guards. Sixteen of those indicted were charged in June on criminal complaints." The White House spokesperson back tracked on it saying it was discussed but no apology. This is just another example of talking out of both sides of the mouth at the White House. They tell Heads of States one thing and us another thing. http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/351461-erdogan-trump-apologized-to-me-over-turkish-bodyguards-attacking
