Many newspapers, including New York Times and Washington Post require subscriptions, but without one we can see a few articles each month.  We can also check with our local libraries to find out how to get online access through them.

1.      We may have avoided a government shutdown, but we are still facing a number of critical deadlines at the end of this month. The Children’s Health Insurance Program, which ensures more than 9 million kids from low-income family can get health insurance, must be reauthorized by September 30th, and health care advocates are worried conservatives will try to add on destructive measures to the bill that will jeopardize its passage  (http://www.healthcarefinancenews.com/news/chip-reauthorization-complicated-packed-legislative-calendar-month). Let’s call our members of Congress and tell them we want CHIP reauthorized quickly and cleanly. (And those of us on Twitter can also spread the word about the need to call… be sure to tag your tweets with #RogansHeroes!)

2.      One of Trump’s longest-lasting legacies will be the judges he gives lifetime appointments to the federal bench, and he’s setting a record pace with getting them confirmed. His nominees have been young and virulently right wing (http://thehill.com/regulation/administration/346248-trump-quietly-putting-his-stamp-on-the-courts). Judicial vacancies below the Supreme Court level often don’t get the public attention they deserve. Let’s make sure our senators know we’re watching and tell them we want them to do everything in their power to block Trump from stacking the federal bench.

3.      Another school shooting has resulted in the death of a student and others injured.  http://abc7.com/1-killed-3-hurt-in-washington-school-shooting/2412517/ Since 2013 there have been 239 school shootings.  https://everytownresearch.org/school-shootings/ Let’s join Everytown and help build awareness of the causes of gun violence in America:  http://act.everytown.org/signup/everytown-c3-join/  Let’s then tell our legislators, federal and state, that we want them to enact legislation to keep our students safe in school and guns out of the hands of those who should not have them.

4.      "If anything, advocates for immigrants brought to this country as children may have lost ground. Representative Mike Coffman, Republican of Colorado, pulled back a petition he had initiated to force the House to take up legislation to protect so-called DREAMers. A Senate Judiciary Committee hearing into the issue was canceled this week. And Representative Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said he would not move on any such legislation before he addressed criminal alien gangs and border security. "With all the other things going on right now, it’s kind of put on the back burner,” Mr. Coffman conceded. “He could have done an immediate phase out,” he said. “That would really put pressure on Congress to put DACA right on the top of the agenda. But in giving Congress six months, with all the other things going on right now, the debt limit, the appropriations, tax reform, it’s not certainly on the top of the agenda right now.” https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/12/us/politics/daca-dream-act-congress-trump.html Let’s not let DACA take a back seat. Let's remind our reps that we don't have much time to take care of our young DREAMers who are good for our country and our economy.

5.      It may not come as any surprise to us that the government has way too much access to our personal information, but in this age of activism, we should be aware of what we can do about it. Watching this TED Talk by Jennifer Granick, surveillance and cybersecurity counsel with the ACLU's Speech, Privacy and Technology Project, is a good way to start. "Only rules are stopping the government from abusing this information....but the law has fallen down on the job and we do not have the rules in place that we need." She offers some ways to resist "the golden age of surveillance," and what we should be aware of. In particular she argues for the renewal and reform of Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act, which holds the government accountable in their collection of personal information. She says we should pressure our MoCs to implement important reforms to this law. "We need transparency, and we need to know what the government is doing."  https://www.ted.com/talks/jennifer_granick_how_the_us_government_spies_on_people_who_protest_including_you#t-851540

6.      Let’s look at this list of the 29 things Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is doing to hurt public education. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2017/09/06/democrats-list-29-ways-they-say-betsy-devos-is-hurting-public-education/?utm_term=.3f8505a1f798 Then, let’s remind DeVos—and Congress—that it’s the Department of Education’s job to support students in our public schools. Specifically, let’s tell our Congressional Representatives that we expect them to support HR 3740, the Homeless and Foster Youth Act. This bipartisan bill, introduced by Katherine Clark (D-MA), will cut the red tape that often keeps homeless or foster youth from enrolling in higher education, and will support programs that help homeless and foster youth to attend and succeed in college. http://katherineclark.house.gov/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=23FC13D4-DECD-4016-92CC-73AFC93F88A9

7.      Despite Texas’s recent losing streak in federal court over its discriminatory districting practices, it has just won a victory in the Supreme Court, which ruled 5 to 4 that Texas need not immediately redraw electoral districts found by the lower courts to diminish the influence of minority voters: https://www.texastribune.org/2017/09/12/supreme-court-puts-redrawing-texas-political-maps-hold/ This will likely upend efforts to redraw voting districts before the 2018 elections.  Let’s insist that the Pence-Kobach Commission on Electoral Integrity—before whom 12 white men and no women or minorities testified on Tuesday—take up Texas’s compromise of electoral integrity by gerrymandering: VP Pence 202-456-1414 or 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, DC 20500 and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach 785-296-4564 or  Memorial Hall, 1st Floor, 120 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66612-1594.

8.      “Equifax Inc. was lobbying lawmakers and federal agencies to ease up on regulation of credit-reporting companies in the months before its massive data breach.”  https://www.wsj.com/articles/equifax-lobbied-for-easier-regulation-before-data-breach-1505169330  Let’s make sure our MoCs know that these credit agencies obviously need more, not less, regulation to ensure that these kinds of hacks do not happen again.

State Actions

Other Actions

1.      ESPN host Jemele Hill has had her hand slapped by ESPN for speaking out and calling Trump a white supremacist: http://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/350308-espn-host-calls-trump-a-white-supremacist Let’s thank her for speaking up (Twitter: @jemelehill) and let ESPN know that evidence points strongly to the truth in her statement: (Twitter: @ESPN) or http://www.espn.com/espn/news/story?page=contact-index

2.      Our understanding of how Facebook was used by Russians to interfere in our election is deepening as it was revealed that the ads placed on Facebook promoted not only ideas but also events, a fact that Facebook left out of their initial conversations with the Senate Intelligence Committee: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-facebook-propaganda/facebook-says-some-russian-ads-during-u-s-election-promoted-live-events-idUSKCN1BN2VG Let’s let Facebook know that we expect a whole lot more from them at this critical time: (Twitter: @Facebook) or contact them within the Facebook application.

3.      It seems that Motel 6 is now sending guest lists to ICE/Homeland Security to check for undocumented persons.  It is not known how widespread this tactic is, but reports say that at least 20 people have been arrested over a period of several months in Arizona.  “Due to a 2015 Supreme Court decision, law enforcement officials can't force hotels to turn over information about guests. This means these Motel 6 hotels are voluntarily offering the information with the full knowledge guests could possibly end up arrested or deported.”  http://www.newsweek.com/motel-6-reporting-undocumented-guests-ice-664551  Let’s let Motel 6 corporate headquarters know how we feel about this:  G6 Hospitality, 4001 International Parkway, Carrollton, Texas 75007 / 972-360-9000.  Let’s also contact Motel 6 spokesperson, Tom Bodett and his ad agency:  Tom Bodett, PO Box 268, Putney, VT 05346 (tbodett@gmail.com) and Steven Arcieri, Arcieri & Assoc., 305 Madison Ave, New York NY 10165 / 212-286-1700 (steven@arcieritalent.com ).  No one should fear this when they check into a motel/hotel.

4.      We’ve all heard about the Equifax hacking.  Over half of us have had our credit reports hacked.  Here is how we can figure out if we are at risk and what to do:  http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/affected-equifax-hack-heres-now/

Petitions

1.      We can, through Move On, add our names as “citizen co-sponsors” of Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All bill: https://petitions.moveon.org/sign/medicare-for-all-28

2.      We should lend our individual and group support to a letter protesting Homeland Security’s demand that that ALL 154,000 DACA holders whose DACA permit expires between September 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018 must re-enroll in the program by October 5, 2017. This deadline is arbitrary, unworkable, and cruel. Many DACA holders are unaware of this sudden deadline, and will not be able to raise the $495 on such short notice.  This letter to HS Secretary Elaine Duke is sponsored by Make The Road New York, America's Voice, the National Immigration Law Center, Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA), and United We Dream:  https://www.gopetition.com/petitions/sign-on-letter-to-push-back-arbitrary-and-cruel-daca-re-enrollment-deadline.html

Marches/events/teleconferences to attend/organize

1.      President Obama has announced the Obama Foundation Summit to be held in Chicago in October.  During this inaugural Summit, hundreds of leaders from around the world will come together to exchange ideas, explore creative solutions to common problems, and experience civic art, technology, and music from around the world.  Let’s find out more about it from President Obama himself and find out how we can be part of this, in person and virtually:  https://www.obama.org/summit/
