5. Call Senator Lamar Alexander's office to complain about his decision NOT to give more time for a second round off questions on Betsy Devos. One of our did and a REAL PERSON took the call. She did have to wait on hold for a couple of minutes, but the office assistant was kind, gracious and thanked her for reaching out. An ACLU delegation is in Standing Rock today, facilitating meetings between U.N. officials and members of the International Indian Treaty Council. “Trump’s decision to give the go-ahead for the Dakota Access Pipeline is a slap in the face to Native Americans and a blatant disregard for the rights to their land. By law, they are entitled to water rights and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, not sacrificed for political expediency and profit making. 23. You know who DOES care about your zip code? Your legislators.  Harness that power. Look at the bills they’re currently (co)sponsoring and see if it raises any red flags for you:

d)     If you see any bills that you strongly support/object to, let your Legislators know by showing up to their in-state offices (phone calls also work).

e)      Let your friends, neighbors, and local activist groups know what you found so they can benefit from your research.

 Spread the word. Make some noise. Demand to be heard. Make sure that your legislators are working to enact legislation that you support.

In 1984, the Reagan Administration, announced a new policy, the Global Gag Rule, which forbids foreign NGOs from receiving US Family Planning funds if they perform, counsel or refer women for abortion services, or advocate for the liberalization of abortion laws where they work.  Obama recinded this rule when he became President. a)  Contact them when you feel they do quality work or make responsible choices. For example, CNN did an excellent job of refusing to blindly air the White House Press Conference live. There is a meme going around saying that the organizers of the Women’s March want to get an accurate count.  If you took part in the March in any way, please text “Count Me” to 89800.  Counting open until 1/24. Within moments of Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Trump Administration updated the White House website.  While issues important to them were added, some other changes were also made:  Climate change gone. Civil rights gone. LGBT rights gone. There are two things that Donald Trump can do to regain the trust of the American people.  The first would be to sell all his assets and put them in a blind trust that would yield a fair return, while he was taking a hiatus from his business life, to serve the public in the highest office in the land. From RISE concerning Scott Pruitt for the head of the EPA:  Among other things, Pruitt denies climate change, has a history of fighting the EPA on its expenditures and regulations, & heavily supports the oil and gas industry. 10. From RISE concerning the nomination of Tom Price for HHS Secretary:  Price adamantly opposes the Affordable Care Act (more on this coming soon) and plans to repeal without replacing it. He is a fierce opponent of abortion and a women's right to choose, holds a misguided belief that all women can afford birth control and therefore free contraception is an unnecessary component of the Affordable Care Act, and stands firmly against federal funding for Planned Parenthood. In 2015 he opposed legislation that would make it illegal for employers to discriminate against women taking birth control. 11. From Two Hours a Week:  Yet another billionaire has been tossed into the ring of cabinet positions. Steven Mnuchin, former Goldman Sachs executive, and current hedge fund and banking mogul will have his senate confirmation hearing this Thursday, January 19th.  Mnuchin earned his first fortune the old-fashioned way…he inherited it. And he has gone on to represent the worst of Wall Street greed, making billions off the housing crisis and ensuing foreclosures.  During the recession in 2009, he engineered the creation of OneWest Bank, a leader in foreclosing on seniors, and in communities of color, that profited him at the government's expense.  Steven Mnuchin's financial policies will do little for ordinary families and working class communities, and he will do lots to ensure the continued wealth of his wall-street cronies.  Not a good choice to oversee our Dept. of Treasury.  Contact the Finance Committee members:  https://www.finance.senate.gov/about/membership  and your own senators, too:  http://act.commoncause.org/site/PageServer?pagename=sunlight_advocacy_list_page

With the possibility of some poor choices being made at the federal level, it is time to put pressure on our state governments to take on the bigger role of protecting our environment.  It is time to call out governors to ask that the states take the lead in fighting climate change, given that the federal government doesn't look like it's going to make it a priority.
