NEED FOR WITNESSES
AND EVIDENCE: McConnell now says he does not have the GOP
votes to block impeachment witnesses. https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-defense-team-to-close-arguments-complicated-by-bolton-reports-11580215229 There are some Democratic senators who are taking
a wait-and-see approach. https://www.politico.com/news/2020/01/03/democrats-trump-trial-vote-092990
We know there will be a lot of wheeling
and dealing over the next few days. Let’s
keep checking in with all our Senators, even the Democrats. to remind them that
they’ve only heard oral arguments and that witnesses and evidence is the next step
we all need. Their offices are counting calls/contacts. In addition to the continual calling of their
Washington offices, let’s also flood their local offices and use Stamps
Licked (to have our letters hand-delivered to our senators’ offices) as
well as Resistbot. Let’s make sure they know where we stand.
INDIVISIBLE
IMPEACHMENT CALLS: For yet another way to get the word out on
the need for witnesses and evidence, Indivisible is bringing back their Hubdialer
to help us get in touch with voters in other states to encourage them to call
their senators. Let’s find out more
here and sign up to help: https://act.indivisible.org/signup/impeachment-senate-calls
PUBLIC CHARGE
RULE UPHELD: “The U.S. Supreme Court gave the go-ahead on
Monday for one of President Donald Trump’s hardline immigration policies,
allowing his administration to implement a rule denying legal permanent
residency to certain immigrants deemed likely to require government assistance
in the future.” https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-court-immigration/us-supreme-court-lets-hardline-trump-immigration-policy-take-effect-idUSKBN1ZQ24N Fearing this might happen, last June Rep.
Judy Chu (D-CA) “took up the issue
by introducing legislation (HR 3222)
to prevent any federal funds from being used to implement the rule, which she
said would “increase xenophobia and bigotry.” https://www.rollcall.com/news/congress/supreme-court-rules-trumps-public-charge-rule-can-proceed
For more information: https://5calls.org/issue/public-charge-act
Let’s ask all our MoCs to make sure that this type of legislation gets
passed. Under rules like this, most of
our own immigrant ancestors would have never been able to come here. (h/t Chop

NATIONAL PILGRIMAGE TO CLOSE THE CAMPS—Tsuru for
Solidarity, a non-violent, direct action project of Japanese American social
justice advocates, is leading the planning of a gathering of Japanese Americans
from across the country in Washington, DC, June 5-7, 2020. The purpose of the
gathering is to express solidarity with immigrant and refugee communities under
attack in the US. Attendees will bring 125,000 paper cranes (tsuru) to
represent the Japanese Americans who were imprisoned in concentration camps by
the US government during World War II. We can support the pilgrimage by holding
“Tsuru Fold-ins” to bring to D.C. or to mail them to Tsuru for Solidarity by
May 1, 2020. To organize a fold-in, receive updates, register to attend
and learn of other ways to participate, let’s visit: https://tsuruforsolidarity.org/2019/11/13/125000-paper-cranes-to-dc-in-june-2020-for-tsuru-for-solidaritys-national-pilgrimage-to-close-the-camps/
