Many newspapers, including New York Times and Washington Post require subscriptions, but without one we can see a few articles each month.  We can also check with our local libraries to find out how to get online access through them.

1.      By a vote of 216 to 212, the House narrowly passed the budget resolution that gives a fast-track to Republican tax “reform”:  http://www.npr.org/2017/10/26/560215916/congress-paves-way-for-tax-legislation-by-passing-budget-resolution The narrowness of that vote suggests that some of our Republican MoCs may be susceptible to arguments that this tax “reform” serves the wealthy and not the majority of us. The battle moves to the Trump Tax Plan, which they plan to have in place by December 23, introducing it in the House Nov. 1, sending it to Ways and Means Committee Nov 6 and to the Senate by Nov. 13.   We need to apply pressure on our representatives in Congress to consider who this “reform” will profit. We can read MoveOn's Ben Wikler's expert analysis:   https://twitter.com/benwikler/status/923573702092099584 and Chad Bolt of Indivisible's take:  https://twitter.com/chadderr/status/923616697189314560  We can 1) use MoveOn's Toolkit:  .https://notonepenny.org/, 2)  contact members of the House Ways and Means Committee:  https://waysandmeans.house.gov/subcommittee/full-committee  We stopped the ACA Repeal, and, if we fight hard, we can stop this too.

2.      While it is refreshing to hear some Republican senators begin to speak out against Trump, it is still important to make sure that their actions, and votes, follow their words. Vox has a great article, which details how these senators should band together in order to gain leverage and get good legislation passed http://bit.ly/2yKqEDX For instance, rather than freely voting to pass the banking bill, Senators Corker, Flake, and McCain could have used their votes as leverage to get crucial bipartisan legislation passed. Let's call these senators and remind them that they can and should use their influence and positions to work across the aisle; something that has rarely been done in this administration. Senator McCain: (202) 224-2235 Senator Flake: 202-224-4521 Senator Corker: 202-224-3344

3.      Yesterday, Trump declared the opioid problem a national emergency and said that the border wall would help curtail the access to the drugs.  http://time.com/4999244/opioid-crisis-donald-trump-criminals-drug-companies-mexico-china/  Politifact checked the accuracy of that and found that Trump’s own Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis did not recommend a wall.  http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2017/oct/26/will-border-wall-stop-drugs-coming-united-states/   Let’s make sure our MoCs know here’s another reason we don’t need the wall.

4.      Representatives Ro Khanna and Walter Jones' bipartisan legislation to withdraw the United States Armed Forces from Yemen is slowly proceeding in in the House, but it still needs to be passed by the Committee on Foreign Affairs. Let's familiarize ourselves with the bill:  http://nyti.ms/2yWyeu2 , then contact the chairman and ranking member and ask them to support H.Con.Res. 81: Directing the President pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution to remove United States Armed Forces from unauthorized hostilities in the Republic of Yemen. Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce: (202) 225-4111 Ranking Member Eliot Engel:  (202) 225-2464

5.      “A 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy has been detained by federal immigration authorities in Texas after she passed through a Border Patrol checkpoint on her way to a hospital to undergo emergency gall bladder surgery. The agents allowed her to continue to Driscoll Children’s Hospital, the family said, but followed the ambulance the rest of the way there, then waited outside her room until she was released from the hospital. Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat who represents the Laredo area in Congress, called on Wednesday for the girl to be released back to her family.” https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/25/us/girl-cerebral-palsy-detained-immigration.html  ICE teams should be working to get drug groups and criminals, not wasting their time and our money chasing after a sick little girl. We can join Rep Cuellar and demand the release of this child.  Let’s call our reps no matter where you live and ask them to pressure ICE to release this little girl. We do not agree with separating children from loving families.

6.      The Department of Interior has announced a proposal to drastically increase entry fees into seventeen national parks http://n.pr/2zQu0FQ While it currently costs $25-$30 per vehicle year-round, the new fees would increase to $75 per vehicle, during a five-month peak season making our national parks less accessible to many of us. Meanwhile, the Trump administration's proposed budget for 2018 would cut $296.6 million from the National Park Service (NPS) https://on.doi.gov/2z8W224 We have until November 23 to submit public comments protesting this rate hike. National parks should be accessible (and affordable) for everyone! Let’s submit comments to
https://parkplanning.nps.gov/proposedpeakseasonfeerates or1849 C Street, NW, Mail Stop: 2346 Washington, DC 20240.

7.      Since the Supreme Court chose to designate corporations as people and equate money with speech, we badly need new legislation to undo those regrettable decisions. Back in 2013, Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) proposed a constitutional amendment as S.J. Resolution 19 (https://www.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/senate-joint-resolution/19), and at a mere 3 sentences, it is a model of clarity and brevity. Let's read/text/email it to our MoCs today to remind them that this is what we want, so that maybe we won't have to spend so much time fighting ridiculous attempts to enact tax cuts for the 1%.

8.      When asked about the dispute between Trump and Senators Corker and Flake, Texas Senator Ted Cruz said, “We've got a job to do, damn it, and so all of this nonsense, I got nothing to say on it. Everyone shut up and do your job, is my view.”
http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/357116-cruz-on-gop-trump-feud-shut-up-and-do-your-job  Jay Caruso penned a good op-ed on this topic for the Dallas Morning News:
https://www.dallasnews.com/opinion/commentary/2017/10/25/sen-cruz-colleagues-shut-donald-trump Let’s be in touch with Cruz to remind him that Corker and Flake are doing their jobs: https://www.cruz.senate.gov/?p=email_senator

9.      “Vice President Pence on Wednesday said that President Trump has instructed the State Department to stop funding certain "ineffective" United Nations relief efforts and to instead provide humanitarian assistance directly through USAID and "faith-based groups."”
http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/357224-pence-says-us-to-stop-funding-ineffective-un-relief-efforts This sounds like yet another disturbing step towards blurring the line between church and state. Let’s ask our MoC to work towards legislation that will block this sort of measure, and contact the State Department (https://register.state.gov/contactus/contactusform) asking it not to implement Trump’s instructions.

10.  The Trump-Pruitt EPA has bowed to chemical industry pressure and reversed the ban on chlorpyrifos, a pesticide toxic enough to cause brain damage in infants in utero https://ww2.kqed.org/futureofyou/2017/10/09/farmworkers-want-common-pesticide-banned-in-calif-after-trump-epa-refuses/  Democrats in Congress are trying to step up where Polluting Pruitt is letting us down, proposing legislative bans through S. 1624 and H.R. 3380. Activists on the ground in California are also looking to their state government to stop use of this poison. Let’s make sure our elected officials know where we stand. Let’s contact our reps and let them know we want them to co-sponsor proposed legislation to bar chlorpyrifos, and let’s reach out to our state legislators and ask them to step up where the federal government is set to let us down on this issue. (H/T Jessica Craven)

11.  With a president who has demonstrated open contempt for our constitutional values in the White House, surveillance reform is more important than ever. It’s time to put an end to warrantless spying on Americans and let the notorious “Section 702” expire. Yet Congress is preparing to extend this power until the end of 2025 http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-cyber-surveillance-congress/senate-diverges-over-renewal-of-internet-spying-law-idUSKBN1CT18J   Let’s contact our reps and tell them we need to renew our commitment to privacy and civil liberties, and they should oppose any efforts to keep Section 702 in place.

State Actions

1.      ALL:  Santa Cruz indivisible is sharing information on Interstate Crosscheck Voting Software. This software program is being used in 27 states. Many states have dropped Crosscheck in favor of ERIC which was in part funded by the Pew Foundation. http://santacruzindivisible.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Interstate-Crosscheck-Voting-Software_Final3.pdf  “In Kobach’s hands in Kansas, Crosscheck has evolved into a tool for shoring up claims of voter fraud instead of its original intention of keeping voter rolls accurate. And critics say that mission inappropriately targets voters who made innocent mistakes and shouldn’t be criminally charged.”  http://hppr.org/post/kansans-caught-crosscheck-system-singled-out-kobachs-voter-fraud-campaign. “In theory, the program is supposed to detect possible cases of people voting in multiple locations. But academics and states that use the program have found that its results are overrun with false positives, creating a high risk of disenfranchising legal voters.”

2.      NY - Manhattan:  Per the NY Post, A former candidate for Brooklyn district attorney wants to take on Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. — as a write-in candidate – in next month’s election, for failing to press sex crimes charges against disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in 2015. “Cy Vance, Eric Gonzalez, Harvey Weinstein, Donald Trump, seems it’s about power and money and the drive to hold on to both,” former Brooklyn prosecutor Marc Fliedner told The Post. “Even when it’s at the expense of what is so obviously right under the law.” If we are in the Manhattan DA's district, let's write-in Marc Fliedner on our ballots.

3.      VA: On Wednesday, Postcards for Virginia volunteers sent 136,000 postcards to Virginia voters.  If we are Democratic voters in Virginia, let's watch our mail for a get-out-the-vote reminder postcard from a grassroots volunteer.  We Rogan's listers can go the extra mile by taking a selfie with the postcard with the hashtag #FlipVABlue and posting it on our social media accounts.  If we want to write postcards, the Postcards4VA campaign is over but we can still write for other qualified progressive candidates (including some in Virginia) at Postcards to Voters. Email: JOIN@TonyTheDemocrat.org

4.      CA:  Huge budget cuts crippled outreach that lets people know when, how and where to sign up for the ACA, so Indivisible ACA Signup Project is spreading the word through social media.  They have only 19 days to get 20 more supporters.  Help them reach their goal by November 15   to set off a Thunderclap, a social media flash mob message blast. Please click, add your social media support on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr.  THEN cut, paste and share  https//www.thunderclap.it/projects/63537-aca-signup-reminder  Find out more about how Thunderclap helps grassroots organizing here:  https://www.socialworkhelper.com/2013/10/02/thunderclap-can-help-grassroots-organizing/amp/

5.      GA:  “Days after activists filed a lawsuit over the security of Georgia's election systems, the university housing the servers at the center of the case wiped them of all data.”  http://thehill.com/policy/cybersecurity/357323-georgia-election-server-wiped-days-after-lawsuit  A Voice for All Georgia is now seeking the recall of Secretary of State, Brian Kemp.  We can help by becoming a petition circulator:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfNeUzeyFRdoAnnmBJuPi-N6X9H21qYDfKkjT_VjICGnONLwQ/viewform

Other Actions

1.      Let's read this article on the use of inmates for free labor from Talk Poverty "Last week, a Louisiana sheriff gave a press conference railing against a new prisoner release program because it cost him free labor from “some good [inmates] that we use every day to wash cars, to change oil in the cars, to cook in the kitchen.” Two days later, news broke that up to 40 percent of the firefighters battling California’s outbreak of forest fires are prison inmates working for $2 an hour. Practices like these are disturbingly common: Military gearground meatStarbucks holiday products, and McDonald’s uniforms have all been made (or are still made) with low-wage prison labor.  Inmates are exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act, which requires that workers are paid at least the federal minimum wage. That makes it completely legal for states to exploit inmates for free or cheap labor. More than half of the 1.5 million people in state and federal prisons work while incarcerated, and the vast majority only make a few cents per hour."  Let's be aware of how inmates are being used as slave labor. We can check out this list at Caged Bird magazine of 50 companies currently supporting this form of slavery.  We can write to these companies to let them know we do not approve and think inmates should make at least minimum wage.

2.      "The WNBA and NBA Board of Governors have unanimously approved the relocation of the San Antonio Stars to Las Vegas, WNBA President Lisa Borders announced last week.  MGM Resorts International will own and operate the team, which will begin play in Las Vegas in the 2018 season. The team’s home arena will be the Mandalay Bay Events Center. In addition, MGM Resorts International has named Bill Laimbeer as the team’s President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach.  A two-time WNBA Coach of the Year and three-time WNBA champion, Laimbeer played 14 NBA seasons and won back-to-back titles with the Detroit Pistons in 1989 and 1990. Season ticket holder deposits will be accepted beginning in early November."  If we are in or near Las Vegas and want to follow a scandal-free sport, let's consider getting tickets and supporting the Stars. We can follow @LasVegasWNBA and visit wnba.com/lasvegas for additional information.

3.      "The NAACP is warning travelers — in particular, African-Americans — that their safety could be compromised if they fly American Airlines, citing a series of "troublesome conduct" by employees." per this article from NBC News...In a memo Wednesday to American Airlines employees, CEO Doug Parker said he was "disappointed" and said the air carrier shares the same mission as the NAACP. "We do not and we will not tolerate discrimination of any kind," Parker said. "We have reached out to the NAACP and are eager to meet with them to listen to their issues and concerns." We are glad to hear that American Airlines is reaching out to the NAACP.  Let's write anyway to let them know we stand against discrimination in all forms and want to know what they are doing to combat this systemic problem in their organization.  Let's tell them that we will not be flying their airline until the NAACP rescinds their warning.  American Airlines, Attn: Doug Parker, Chairman and CEO, PO Box 619616, DFW Airport TX 75261-9616  or we can call 817-963-1234.

4.      We have been watching the federal government’s inadequate response to the Puerto Rican disaster, but we must now pay attention to the voracious for-profit companies that are about to make a fortune from somewhat dubious contracts to “fix,” for example, the power grid:  https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/10/26/16533512/puerto-rico-power-contracts  As Elizabeth Yeampierre & Naomi Klein point out, the “Disaster capitalists” are “circling Puerto Rico, but this time they may not get their prey. . . . Puerto Ricans — both on the island and the mainland — are fighting back in real time.  Under the banner of a “just recovery” for Puerto Rico, thousands have come together to design a bold and holistic plan for the island to be rebuilt as a beacon for a safe, resilient, and thriving society in the era of accelerating climate chaos, spiraling economic inequality, and rising white nationalism.”
https://theintercept.com/2017/10/20/puerto-rico-hurricane-debt-relief/  Groups like the Organización Boricuá de Agricultura Ecológica de Puerto Rico (https://www.facebook.com/organizacionboricua/) and  Resilient Power Puerto Rico (http://resilientpowerpr.org/resilientpr/) are working to save PR from the “disaster capitalists” who want only to profit from the misery of Puerto Ricans. We should lend them our support.

5.      From Indivisible Ventura:  “Let’s talk about this 11 year-old girl who’s been worried about the Flint water situation since she’s been 9. Along with playing piano, swimming, fencing and taking dance lessons, she has invented the cheapest, most effective test for lead in water and won “America’s Top Young Scientist”. God, what was I doing when I was 11?”  Let’s send her congratulations through her school:  STEM School and Academy, 8773 S Ridgeline Blvd, Highlands Ranch, CO 80129

4.      What is going on with this whole Steele dossier thing? Who's to blame for what? What is really going on with HRC and uranium? It can be hard to keep straight. This piece by David Corn, who was the first to report on the Steele memos in October 16, explains: "Republicans are asserting the Steele memos should be dismissed because they are a dastardly Democratic oppo concoction and saying this somehow undermines the whole Trump-Russia scandal. Yet at the same time, they are demanding an investigation of the fake Clinton-uranium scandal that was based on a debunked story subsidized and promoted by a big-money conservative donor and Trump backer." 1.      We have a chance to impede Republican Budget, scheduled to be approved today barring a last-minute revolt. Rep Peter King of New York and several other Rebublicans object to the elimination of state and local taxes, because they think voting for this could cost them re-election. Let's convince them that they're right and encourage them not to vote for this or any budget that cuts these exemptions.  https://www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2017-10-25/state-tax-break-could-jeopardize-budget-vote-macarthur-says  Fewer than one-third of us like this plan: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-tax-poll/fewer-than-a-third-of-americans-back-trump-tax-plan-reuters-ipsos-poll-idUSKBN1CT2TD   This is good chance to write a further wedge into an already fracturing party. Let’s call oour House Representative and tell them you will not stand for losing your State and local tax deductions and will vote against anyone who takes them away.

2.      The CBO has weighed in and the Murray/Alexander healthcare bill has received the best score of any of the healthcare options that have failed.  It would keep coverage stable, and cut the deficit.  While it is too late to affect 2018 premiums, it is the best chance we have.  http://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/25/cbo-score-murray-alexander-health-care-244158  Let’s keep on our MoCs now that we have this additional information.

3.      Trump's nominee to be Under Secretary, or Chief Scientist, at the Department of Agriculture, Sam Clovis, will likely be having his confirmation hearing with the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry very soon. According to a provision in law, the person who holds the position of Chief Scientist must be chosen from "among distinguished scientists with specialized training or significant experience in agricultural research, education or economics," in which case Clovis should immediately be rejected for the position. Further, Clovis is homophobic and does not agree with sound science http://n.pr/2xIzmBV Let's make sure we call committee Chairman Pat Roberts  ((202) 224-4774) and Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow ((202) 224-4822) and ask that they oppose the nomination of Clovis to Under Secretary at the Department of Agriculture.

4.      It looks like the bipartisan Murray-Alexander cost sharing reductions bill may have enough votes to pass the Senate http://politi.co/2zG68Vh Now, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell needs to bring the bill to the floor for a vote http://bit.ly/2zDDzHf Let's contact Senator McConnell and tell him that we need to stabilize the insurance market, and the Murray-Alexander bill needs to be brought to a vote (202) 224-2541

5.      Jeff Flake’s announcement that he will not run for Senate in 2018 for his seat in Arizona was accompanied by a fiery speech:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/oct/24/jeff-flake-speech-donald-trump-senate  and a fiery op-ed in the Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/opinions/enough--it-is-time-to-stand-up-to-trump/2017/10/24/12488ee4-b908-11e7-a908-a3470754bbb9_story.html . This is a summary of how Flake’s announcement played out during a day when Trump dined with the GOP Senators regarding tax reform:http://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/24/trump-republican-unity-corker-flake-244127 Although Flake’s voting record continues to be distressing, it is going to take more in the GOP speaking up like this for any near-term movement in the White House to be possible. It is of note that Senators Flake and Corker have spoken up after announcing they are not running again. Let’s join in Flake’s cry of “Enough” to our own GOP MoC and let’s say the same to Trump: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington DC, 20500

6.      Senator James Risch (R-Idaho) said to Wolf Blitzer on CNN that it is Blitzer’s job to call our Trump’s lying – not his own as a US Senator: http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/357003-gop-senator-tells-cnns-wolf-its-your-job-to-speak-up-on-trump Let’s remind Risch that he has an oath to uphold:

7.      In the aftermath of the 60 Minutes/Washington Post report on how Congress unanimously, and seemingly unknowingly, consented to tie the hands of the Drug Enforcement Agency in cracking down on pharmaceutical companies that enable the wrongful distribution of opioids, bills are being filed in the House and Senate to repeal the offending law:  S. 1960 and H.R. 4084  Let’s tell our MoCs that we want them to repeal the Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act of 2016, restore the ability of the DEA to do its job, and more broadly address the deadly public health crisis of opioid addiction.

8.      US Ambassador to Canada, Kelly Knight Craft, has said that she believes “both sides” of climate science:http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/356836-us-ambassador-to-canada-believes-both-sides-of-climate-science Let’s let Ambassador Kraft know that science does not have two sides, hence being science: https://ca.usembassy.gov/embassy-consulates/ottawa/

9.      The Senate's 51-50 vote to overturn the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's new rule prohibiting forced arbitration clauses in financial contracts (http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/10/25/559950275/senate-kills-rule-on-class-action-suits-against-financial-companies) has deprived the CFPB of an important tool for equalizing the huge power imbalance between financial institutions and their customers. In the wake of this vote, we need to tell our MoCs that we continue to support the core mission of the CFPB "to make consumer financial markets work for consumers, responsible providers, and the economy as a whole." Whatever they might think about forced arbitration clauses, every member of Congress must know that we are done with simply trusting companies like Wells Fargo and Equifax to act in our best interest, and that we will vote for representatives that take the protection of our financial lives seriously.

10.  Govtrack is a nifty resource that disseminates information on bills as they pass through the legislative process. One especially useful feature that we should probably add to our browser favorites: the Congressional Votes Database. Here's where we can look up how our Congresspeople have voted on every single bill!
https://www.govtrack.us/congress/votes# Since Govtrack is a very small outfit (and not a government organization), let's also consider donating to help them keep supplying this vital information: https://www.patreon.com/govtrack

11.  The Center for the Study of Immigrant Education at the University of Southern California has published an "interactive map providing our latest estimates of the number of people that are DACA eligible, and the number of actual DACA recipients by U.S. Congressional District." They have also included calculations on "the estimated contributions that workers with DACA status make to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in each Congressional District." With the discontinuation of DACA, it's important to think about the fact that "this economic contribution is directly equivalent to the loss in GDP anticipated if all DACA workers from the district were removed from the workforce."      Besides the informative visuals, this excellent page also offers resource links at the bottom with more information about DACA and various Dream Act proposals, not to mention: how we can contact our MoCs! Which we should do to remind them that they need to pass a clean Dream Act, and soon.

12.  In the wake of the death of four U.S soldiers in Niger, there’s renewed energy on Capitol Hill for a real debate on reining in presidential war powers, with the chair and ranking member on the Senate Armed Services Committee getting to work on a new proposal http://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/23/mccain-war-powers-niger-attack-244085)  We’re long overdue for putting real limits in place, and Congress needs to know we don’t want Trump to have a blank check to make war any longer. Let’s contact our reps and tell them we want them to make this a priority instead of wasting time trying to cut taxes for the wealthy.

13.  The nomination of Jim Bridenstine for the top position at NASA has some environmental and public health groups on edge, and not just because of the Oklahoma congressman’s public skepticism about climate change per USA Today. 'The Tulsa lawmaker serving his third term has co-sponsored legislation that would force the Environmental Protection Agency to divulge all scientific and technical data the agency is using to craft regulations. Advocates say that legislation would block efforts to reduce pollution because some of the raw data required to justify new regulations would reveal private health information about individuals and therefore could not be released to the general public."  Let's tell our Senators to oppose climate-denying secret-science supporting Bridenstine.   We can also sign this petition at stopbridenstine.com

14.  The EPA’s proposed strategic plan does not mention any aspect of climate change,  https://news.vice.com/story/epas-4-year-plan-says-nothing-about-climate-change   Let’s use this site from the Union of Concern Scientists to tell Scott Pruitt that we need climate solutions, not denial:  https://secure.ucsusa.org/onlineactions/-V977Y6b30iUbZNbKikjcQ2  We can also leave a comment on the official EPA site:  https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=EPA-HQ-OA-2017-0533

15.  The US Department of Agriculture has rescinded “an Obama-era rule that would have made it easier for independent farmers to bring lawsuits against big food companies they raise chicken and other livestock for....The rule aimed to make it easier for farmers to bring companies like Tyson Foods, Pilgrim Pride and Perdue to court over what they say are unfair, deceptive and retaliatory practices.…advocates say the interim final rule marked the first step in creating a culture of accountability, particularly in the poultry industry, where they say farmers are forced to compete against each other in what’s often a rigged system. ”http://thehill.com/regulation/356802-trump-officials-quash-litigation-rule-for-farms Yet, again the current administration seems to be working for the big corporations. Let’s let the Secretary of the USDA, Sonny Perdue, know how disappointed we are in the USDA's decision to rescind this rule: @SecretarySonny or Sonny Perdue, U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1400 Independence Ave., S.W., Washington, DC 20250.

State Actions

1.      ME: Vote to expand health care coverage in Maine on November 7! Maine’s Republican Governor Paul LePage keeps vetoing Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act—but his vetoes can be overridden by the people of Maine. The group Mainers for Health Care http://mainersforhealthcare.org/ is drumming up support for a ballot referendum known as Question 2. If Question 2 passes, 70,000 Mainers will get health insurance through a Medicaid expansion. If we’re in Maine, let’s be sure to vote YES on Question 2 on Tuesday, November 7 http://mainersforhealthcare.org/about/ , and let’s volunteer to get out the vote in support of this important measure: http://mainersforhealthcare.org/take-action/

2.      FL:  "Gov. Rick Scott’s (R) spending priorities for 2018 continue to take shape as he enters his final year in office with a major statewide election on the horizon.  The Republican governor wants the Legislature to increase spending on environmental programs.  Scott’s record on the environment has been controversial on issues ranging from climate change to offshore oil drilling. Early in his tenure, he called for major budget cuts to the state’s five regional water management districts, and in non-election years he called for budget reductions in the Department of Environmental Protection."   Read the full article at the Miami Herald. If we are Floridians, let's continue to look at Rick Scott skeptically on environmental issues. We anticipate that he will be running for the US Senate seat currently held by Senator Bill Nelson (D).  Let's not be fooled by Rick Scott's last-minute attention to the environment.

3.      MO:  It Starts Today, a grassroots movement to help take back seats all over the country by helping to finance their campaigns in a new way, has now launched their first state initiative – in Missouri!  Let’s find out more how we can turn our state around, click here.

Other Actions

1.      The Virginia legislative election will be a key test of our ability to turn out voters in the Trump era, and big victories could badly weaken Trump until midterms (http://www.dailypress.com/news/politics/dp-nws-election-overview-2017-story.html). We need to give it our all and get our folks to the polls. Democracy for America, MoveOn.org and Indivisible have set up a dialer to help call voters tonight, tomorrow evening and all day Saturday.  We can sign up to take part at this link:  https://www2.democracyforamerica.com/events/dfadialer/2017.

2.      Sleeping Giants has launched a new campaign, focusing efforts on getting institutions to divest from Mercer's Renaissance Technologies http://bit.ly/2xnKIL2 Every two days, we'll be contacting a different institution, then taking three steps:  1) "GO to Breitbart and take a screenshot of an offensive article to forward, 2) WRITE a POLITE, NON-OFFENSIVE email or tweet to several decision makers on our list informing them about why an investment in Renaissance Technologies is ultimately funding bigotry. Include the Buzzfeed article above and your screenshot, and 3) TWEET an email response to our attention (@slpng_giants) if you receive one (minus your contact information please)." The first institution that Sleeping Giants focused on was Michigan State University http://bit.ly/2y6yhTn We can read more about the action items and find contact numbers here: http://bit.ly/2yGb5j2 We can also read about the ties between Robert Mercer, Renaissance Technologies, and Breitbart: http://bit.ly/2yyNVKz

3.      Another win for Postcards to Voters!  The postcarding team contributed to yet another successful campaign.  On Tuesday, Casey Conley won his special election in New Hampshire. It was an overwhelming victory, too.  We still have time to write 5 postcards to voters before the Nov. 7 elections. Email: JOIN@TonyTheDemocrat.org to join the team and get VIP voter addresses.

4.      In an effort to aggregate #resistance resources, the coordinators of #ActLocal2017 building a “directory of resources for helping local leaders build their capacity…. Please submit national and/or local trainings and tools that are available to them, online or in person. If you have customized expertise (e.g. media, legal) to offer, indicate that too. 5.      World Wildlife Fund (WWF) connects educators and parents with the materials they need to help kids explore and understand the natural world around them with a new educational resource, Wild Classroom. Now available for free download, Wild Classroom is a growing library of species-focused toolkits that can be used to enhance children’s learning inside or outside of a traditional learning environment. Aligned to US national education standards, the toolkits will include a teacher’s resource guide, fact sheet, and learning activities for science, writing, social studies, art, and physical education that can be easily integrated into an educator’s daily lesson plan. Each will interweave engaging species-specific content with other relevant conservation issues, like habitat loss, poaching and illegal wildlife trade, climate change, and more.  Let’s make sure our teacher friends know about this resource.

6.      “Voter Pact is a text bot that helps friends promise each other they’ll vote. Studies show that we are more likely to vote if we promise a friend that we’ll do it.”  Let’s check it out and see if we can use it to help get out the vote:  https://www.voterpact.org/

7.      Leaders of indigenous communities from Latin America are headed to the United Nations Climate Change Conference that will be taking place in Bonn, Germany in a few days. “Last year was the deadliest ever for environment and land activists, according to the NGO Global Witness. With 158 already killed this year, the death toll in 2017 is on track to be even higher.” The activists are asking “for more help from the international community in pushing for justice when activists are murdered and for better awareness among consumers about the consequences of eating meat, soy or chocolate raised or grown on former indigenous land.”
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/oct/25/protecting-forest-dwellers-goes-hand-in-hand-with-protecting-forests-whitehall-told and http://unfccc.int/meetings/bonn_nov_2017/meeting/10084/php/view/dailyprogramme.php  Let’s take the initiative to 1) reduce our use of paper and opt for recycled products, 2) seek out beef, chocolate and soy that’s been sourced with both climate and social justice in mind (see https://wfto.com/fair-trade/10-principles-fair-trade) and 3) support the work of groups (like http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/forests/amazon-rainforest/) that are striving to support climate justice together with social justice.

8.      If we, or someone we know is a filmmaker, fledgling or otherwise, we have an opportunity to help win the Virginia elections.  MoveOn.org has a “innovative new video program. Your video message can have a huge impact on this election. Here are some tips for making your video and then instruction on how to submit your video:  https://act.moveon.org/survey/submit-your-video-virginia-election

2.      At npr.org, let's read about a recent report that shows that pollution kills more people than AIDS, TB and malaria combined. "Pollution in rapidly developing countries is just getting worse and worse and worse. And it isn't getting the attention it deserves. It needed to be rigorously studied," says Dr. Philip Landrigan, pediatrician and professor of environmental medicine and global health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai." Let's remember this data as we move forward with our environmental activism.

1.      House votes tomorrow on Senate's FY2018 budget resolution to lay groundwork for tax cuts for the rich. http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/the-senate-budget-stinks-but-house-republicans-will-pass-it-anyway/article/2638400  Thanks to Indivisible and CAP Action for compiling these resources:  info, actions, and resources, including scripts for republicans, democrats, state info, and op-ed tools: https://www.trumptaxscam.org, a Tweet thread here:   https://twitter.com/benwikler/status/922533456189509633 and a Toolkit for calls and tweets: https://trumptaxtoolkit.org

2.      Whitefish Energy has won the biggest contract awarded so far in the Puerto Rico effort, to “repair and reconstruct large portions of the island’s electrical infrastructure.” But Whitefish Energy is only two years old, had “just two full-time employees on the day Hurricane Maria made landfall,” and did not go through a formal bidding process to secure the contract, which under normal circumstances would have gone to another utility through a “mutual aid” arrangement. This has prompted questions about whether the chief executive of Whitefish Energy secured the contract by leveraging his personal connections to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, whose son worked on one of the chief executive’s construction sites. Right now, the House Committee on Natural Resources is examining Whitefish Energy’s role in Puerto Rico. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/small-montana-firm-lands-puerto-ricos-biggest-contract-to-get-the-power-back-on/2017/10/23/31cccc3e-b4d6-11e7-9e58-e6288544af98_story.html?utm_term=.9e75673d3a1e To ensure that Puerto Rico gets all of the help it needs, we need to ensure that proper steps are being taken to hand out contracts, that the awardees are competent, and that they’re fulfilling the terms of their contracts. Let’s contact our MoC about these issues, especially if they’re on the House Committee on Natural Resources https://naturalresources.house.gov/about/members.htm

3.      From The Loyal Opposition:  Bipartisan legislation, the Honest Ads bill, has been introduced in the House and Senate to force social media companies to have greater transparency as to who has paid for political ads, and to retain records as to how they are targeted. Passing this legislation is urgent as all evidence points to continued interference in our elections and targeting of 2018.  Call your three members of Congress and ask them to support the Honest Ads bill, which requires social media platforms like Google, Facebook and Twitter to take steps to block foreign political ads and provide greater transparency about who pays for political ads and how they are targeted. More info:  https://www.theloyalopposition.net/daily-ctas/daily-call-to-action-october-24th-2017/

4.      News footage of Houston in the days following Hurricane Harvey focused on how neighbors were helping neighbors. But now that recovery efforts are under way, differences are appearing, and economic problems are driving a wedge into the city. Poorer residents are in danger of becoming homeless as short-term assistance is running out, while more wealthy residents are already rebuilding.https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/hurricane-harvey/hurricane-deepens-divide-between-houston-s-haves-have-nots-n811896 Let’s contact our MoC and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 451 7th Street S.W., Washington, DC 20410 or Telephone: (202) 708-1112) to ensure that long-term assistance is expedited so that Houston’s low and middle class residents can get back on their feet now and don’t have to wait months or even years for the money to trickle down through local agencies.

5.      Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to allow Thomas Farr's nomination to be District Judge of the Eastern District of Northern Virginia to proceed to a full Senate vote http://bit.ly/2gyupEr Farr has a history of working against civil rights, and cannot be trusted to be impartial http://bit.ly/2xIAST9 Let's contact our senators and ask them to oppose the lifetime appointment of Farr to federal judgeship: https://5calls.org/issue/oppose-thomas-farr-federal-judge

6.      Following the Las Vegas mass shooting, members of Congress acted quickly to introduce legislation which would ban bump stocks, or other devices which modify semi-automatic firearms to act as fully-automatic http://bit.ly/2xl7fYU In the weeks since then, however, the momentum has slowed, and the bills that had been introduced have both stalled. We can read more about why Republicans in the Senate, and many in the House refuse to take action http://wapo.st/2ixGr4V Let's make our voices heard, and build the momentum back up. We can ask our representative in the House to support the bipartisan H.R. 3999, and our senators to support S. 1916.

7.      Nicaragua has signed the Paris Climate Accord which leaves the US and Syria is the only non-signers or, in our case, withdrawers: http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/356809-nicaragua-signs-paris-climate-deal-leaving-us-syria-as-only It is of note that Nicaragua had not signed in the first round because of concerns that the accord did not go far enough. A government study has shown that climate change is costing the US billions:https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/amp/extreme-weather-climate-change-costing-taxpayers-billions-n813431  We can use this information to contact our MoC in the GOP to press for our engagement in this truly international effort. Perhaps appealing to the bottom line will be more effective than using science and logic.

8.      "To ensure that people from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have access to treatments and services, Congress and the Trump Administration should quickly take steps to make Medicaid and marketplace coverage available to those who need it." The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a nonpartisan research and policy institute, offers lawmakers excellent advice in this article. Based on their knowledge of past disaster responses, they argue that the WH and Congress should act quickly to: 1) "enact legislation to temporarily increase Puerto Rico’s and the Virgin Islands’ Medicaid block grants, temporarily increase their federal match rates, and eventually uncap their federal Medicaid funding, as well as grant Medicaid coverage to evacuees in other states; 2) take administrative actions to streamline Medicaid access, such as a simplified application process, delayed eligibility redeterminations, and standardized disaster relief waivers; and 3) improve access to marketplace coverage through outreach and application assistance to consumers." https://www.cbpp.org/research/health/history-shows-what-steps-trump-administration-and-congress-can-take-to-ensure-access  Let's share this article in its entirely with our MoCs, especially for its clear, detailed, and itemized list of "What Congress and the Trump Administration Should Do." People are suffering.

9.      The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is accepting public comments until Dec. 15 about their proposal to eliminate the Clean Power Plan. "In August 2015, EPA issued the final Clean Power Plan (CPP) to reduce climate changing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from existing coal- and gas-fired electric power plants.  CO2 is the most prevalent of the greenhouse gases that are the primary cause of climate change, threatening the lives, health, and well-being of Americans and people around the globe." We can read more details and talking points at Save EPA. Let's submit our public comments at  https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=EPA-HQ-OAR-2017-0355. Let's be sure to share this information with our friends and family so they can comment too.

10.  Two years ago, Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Susan Collins (R-ME) requested that the Government Accountability Office, the Congress’s auditing agency, to investigate the cost over time of climate change to the US economy.  The October 14 GAO report outlines many years' worth of government shortcomings with respect to addressing the climate change threat and urges the Trump administration to take climate change risks seriously and begin formulating a response: https://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-17-720  Although Cantwell and Collins note that the White House Office of Management and Budget has calculated that extreme weather events over the past decade cost the federal government $350 billion, there seems to be little hope that the GAO report will get the attention of Trump or the Republicans in Congress: http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/23/politics/gao-report-climate-change/index.html  But maybe we can get their attention.  Let’s send this report and a note saying we expect our representatives to read it to all our MoCs and to the White House.

State Actions

1.      WA:  Huge budget cuts crippled outreach that lets people know when,  how and where to sign up for the ACA, so Indivisible ACA Signup Project is spreading the word through social media. 3.      ALL:  The Iowa ACLU has filed a lawsuit for several groups challenging the constitutionality of what’s known as the “ag gag” law.  ACLU legal director Ritta Bettis, says the law passed in 2012 threatens jail time for those individuals, news media, and advocacy groups who use undercover means to document, or even in some cases report on, questionable activities in agricultural animal facilities.  We can read more at KIWA radio (Sheldon,Iowa). "Ag-gags" are not just an Iowan issue. Let's check out this ASPCA article that explains ag-gags in greater detail and shows rules by state. Let's check out our own state.  If we don't like the current status of ag-gags in our states, let's contact our state representative and state senator to let them know we are opposed to ag-gag rules.

4.      PA: "Pennsylvania lawmakers this week are considering a discriminatory and harmful amendment to the state’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), HR1388, reauthorization legislation that would deny lower-income Pennsylvania transgender youth access to any transition-related health care services, including counseling." Let's read the full story at Lambda Legal then, if we are Pennsylvanians, let's contact our state legislators to let them know we want our transgender youth to have access to the care they need.

5.      NY: Brooklyn - City Council member Stephen Levin of Brooklyn has introduced legislation to change the name of the Williamsburg Bridge to honor musician Sonny Rollins. "The legendary jazz saxophonist lived on the Lower East Side from 1959-1961. During that time, Rollins walked up onto the Williamsburg Bridge every day to play the sax, and in the process, experienced a creative revival. The experience came to be known as Rollins’ “sabbatical.” Read more at The Lo-Down and this site designed specifically for this project SonnyRollinsBridge.net. In addition to City Council approval, the State Legislature would also need to sign off on changing the name of the bridge. If we are Brooklyn residents, let's tell the City Council that we support the Sonny Rollins Bridge.  If we are New Yorkers, let's contact our state legislators (State Assembly and NY State Senate) to sponsor a state bill for the name change.  In a world of bad news, let's take on this positive action.

Other Actions

1.      Been arguing with family members and friends who think Confederate statues need to be preserved because of their historical context? Well, new ones are being erected:
http://www.newsweek.com/new-confederate-monuments-are-quietly-going-across-us-690798 Let’s use this information as we engage with those we disagree with and also keep an eye out for what is being constructed and held up in our own communities.

2.      This is an ACLU update about Jane Doe in Texas who is awaiting an abortion but being blocked from getting one:https://www.aclu.org/blog/immigrants-rights/immigrants-rights-and-detention/jane-doe-wants-abortion-government-hell-bent There is concern that HHS officials will drag their feet until she is past the 20-week mark and Texas has a ban past 20 weeks. Let’s stay attentive to this story if further action items emerge and let’s support the work of the ACLU as we are able: https://action.aclu.org/donate-aclu?ms=web_horiz_nav_hp

3.      Many of us already know about the boycott list Grab Your Wallet (http://grab-your-wallet.com/boycott/retailers), but let's (re)commit to finding at least 2 businesses that we use, or have recently used, and sending them the message that our continued business depends on their severing all ties to the Trump family's businesses, products, and name.

4.      Senator Jeff Flake’s retirement confirms that his seat will be in play in 2018, but it will be a tough race and one that could easily be won by a Trump-style Republican like Kelli Ward (http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/24/politics/jeff-flake-retirement-arizona/index.html). Rep. Kyrsten Sinema is the leading Democratic candidate in this race, and we need to show her our support. Let’s donate to her campaign at http://kyrstensinema.com/, and follow her on Facebook and Twitter.

5.      From Chop Wood/Carry Water:  From a friend: "I heard and read about the awful, racist phone calls coming in to Rep Frederica Wilson and picked up the phone to give her my support today. The guy who answered the phone sounded really overwhelmed. He said it’s mostly hate mail and phone calls from all over the country, but a few people have called in support.  If you have a minute, pick up the phone and let them know it’s not all racists and Trump supporters out there. Sounds like Wilson’s staff needs a hug. 202-225-4506"

6.      We’re coming down to the wire in crucial legislative races in Virginia. This election will be a test of our ability to turn out our voters up and down the ballot in the Trump era (http://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/23/virginia-election-northam-gillespie-democrats-244046). Every Voice, a campaign finance reform organization, is organizing folks to text voters TOMORROW on behalf of its endorsed candidates so we can elect officials we can trust to fight big money. We can sign up to join them at this link:

7.      “Republicans in the House and Senate introduced bills to repeal the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's new rule to ban forced arbitration clauses -- which allow Wall Street banks and predatory financial institutions to block consumers from joining together in a class action lawsuit. The Senate passed this bill last evening.  Let’s use this form to contact our representatives to tell them that we do not want this passed because we should be able to have our day in court against these corporations:  http://p2a.co/m2ePGlS

8.      Numerous Puerto Ricans still do not have safe drinking water http://bit.ly/2zM33Df As we wait for the House to pass relief aid, organizations like the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) are taking the initiative to get Puerto Ricans the help that they need. AFT, Asociacion de Maestros de Puerto Rico, AFSCME, the Hispanic Federation, and Operation Blessing have launched Operation Agua, which will use relief funds to purchase water purification systems for families and communities in Puerto Rico https://www.aft.org/operation-agua For those of us who are able, let's consider contributing to this important cause.

9.      Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore said on a podcast that the legalization of gay marriage was worse than the pro-slavery Dred Scott case in the 1850’s:
http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/356844-roy-moore-scotus-gay-marriage-decision-even-worse-than-1857-pro-slavery This special election is December 12th to fill Jeff Sessions’ seat and polls show that Doug Jones (Democratic candidate) is in striking distance of Moore which was unexpected in that environment. Let’s support Mr. Jones in whatever ways we can to ensure that Moore does not reach the US Senate: https://dougjonesforsenate.com

10.  An 11-year-old Colorado boy (Ames)was reportedly kicked out of his Cub Scout den for asking a Republican state senator pointed questions about her views on gun control. During his research on Marble's website, Ames noticed many of her videos were on gun control, The Washington Post reported. “Given that the Las Vegas shooting happened, I felt that it should be a reasonable thing to ask," Ames told a Denver Fox affiliate. "I don't feel like I did anything wrong." https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2017-10-20/cub-scout-reportedly-kicked-out-of-den-for-asking-about-gun-control I love that this young man is so politically aware. After all the school shootings, many kids want answers. The Denver Area Council for the boy Scouts is reviewing the matter. Let’s support this young man and send a note asking that he be reinstated, and the troop leader replaced. You can contact them here:

11.  Larry Harmon was stricken off the voter list in Ohio because he chose not to vote in a 2012 election; his case--testing whether Ohio can cull its voter rolls if it gives notice of its intent even though laws prohibit removing voters “by reason of the person’s failure to vote”--will be heard by the Supreme Court on November 8th:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/23/us/politics/supreme-court-ohio-voter-purge.html Andrea Anthony’s vote was not counted in Milwaukee because she’d lost her driver’s license, even though she presented an expired Wisconsin state ID as well as proof of residency and a poll worker confirmed that she was registered to vote at her current address:   http://billmoyers.com/story/rigged-voter-suppression-wisconsin/  The League of United Latin American Citizens (lulac.org), the League of Women Voters (lwv.org), and Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (lawyerscommitee.org) are training poll watchers; Drive2Vote (drive2vote.org) and Women Votes (womenvoteproject.org) are driving people to the polls; Vote Riders (voteriders.org) provides voter ID information and has made wallet-sized cards for every state listing acceptable forms of ID; and the Movement for Black Lives has launched the Electoral Justice Project (ejp.m4bl.org).  Given the persistence of the myth of voter fraud and the proliferation of stories of voter disenfranchisement, we should lend our time, energy, and money (if we can) to these and other efforts to defend our voting rights.

2.      Despite what he says, Trump’s tax plan is going to benefit the already-rich and big corporations.  The promises to the middle class are not born out with facts.  Sen. Patty Murray wants us to join her in telling Congress that “we need a tax plan that truly helps workers and the middle class””  https://murraysenate.bsd.net/page/s/oppose-trump-and-the-gop-s-tax-plan
