  1. Jimmy Kimmel’s healthcare story about his newborn son’s heart condition is touching and revealing of so many concerns we all have.  https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/video/2017/may/02/tearful-jimmy-kimmel-baby-ordeal-opening-monologue-video  We have healthcare stories, too.  Let’s make sure we tell those stories to our legislators so they can see what these changes in the ACA will do to our families and us.

  1. Even if we don’t have a compelling healthcare story, we know that we can keep pushing to get better care for more people.  The efforts to repeal and replace the ACA seem to be coming to a head.  http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/331478-gop-struggles-to-find-obamacare-repeal-votes  Let us all reach out to our MoCs with our concerns.

  1. Trump is considering moving Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke Jr. on to a high post at the Department of Homeland Security although Clarke has referred to Black Lives Matters as a terrorist group and has also made anti-Muslim overtures: http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/331139-trump-considers-sheriff-who-called-black-lives-matter-terrorists-for If his name sounds familiar it might be because of this news story: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/midwest/ct-wisconsin-dehydration-death-20170501-story.html  Let’s remind Secretary of Homeland Security John F. Kelly that Clarke is not suited to serve in this role: Department of Homeland Security, Washington DC, 20528 (there is not a street address)

  1. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross made light of the dropping of 59 Tomahawk missiles on Syria by saying it was in lieu of “after-dinner entertainment” when Xi visited Trump:  http://time.com/4762582/wilbur-ross-syria-airstrike-after-dinner-entertainment-donald-trump/   Let’s remind Secretary Ross that bombs are not entertainment: Department of Commerce, 1401 Constitution Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20230

  1. Trump’s Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue proclaimed (and has had confirmed) new rules that free public schools from the requirements put in place by the Obamas' “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.” Perdue wants to “make school meals great again” by allowing schools, starting next year, to discard the calorie, fat, or sodium requirements of the 2010 legislation and ignore its mandate to increase offerings of fruit, whole grains, vegetables, and nonfat milk:  https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/01/us/politics/nutrition-rules-school-lunches-michelle-obama.html  Let’s take a moment to share your thoughts with him: US Dept of Agriculture, 1400 Independence Ave, SW, Washington, DC 20250.  Then, let’s also act locally to make sure the schools in our districts continue to put the health of our children ahead of putting “special interests back on the school menu.

  1. While a tentative budget has been agreed upon to keep the government funded through September, it is still vulnerable to policy riders before it is finalized. https://www.indivisibleguide.com/resource/legislative-process-101-policy-riders/ Let's call our representatives to ensure that they do not support any spending bills with dangerous policy riders. Call script: https://5calls.org/issue/recdrtW8ihk7eOJrH

  1. Bernie Sanders and other Democrats introduced the clean energy "50x100" Act (S.987) http://www.cbsnews.com/news/100-percent-clean-energy-bill-introduced-outside-capitol/  Let's ask our two Senators to cosponsor S.987 and a clean energy future.

  1. Bills are in the legislature to remove the deadline to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).  https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-joint-resolution/5/text  and https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-joint-resolution/53  Most people think this is already the law.  We need to use the links to check to see if our MoC's are cosponsors. If they are not, we can let them know we would like them to cosponsor SJ.5 and HJ.53 and finally set the stage for ratification of the ERA.

  1. Govtrack.us is a great website to find information about bills in the legislature.  Here's a list of the current "hot" bills with links to more information about each of them. Sometimes the names of the bills are misleading. https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/#hot  Let's browse the list to see if any of our personal "hot" issues are among them.  If so, let's tell our MoC's which ones we support.

  1. Donald Trump is trying to push through a tax plan that massively cuts taxes for the wealthy – including possibly saving tens of millions of dollars for Trump himself. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/04/28/us/politics/trump-savings-tax-plan.html  But it’s hard to know exactly how much Trump is planning on cutting his own taxes, since we still haven’t seen his tax returns. Let us keep up the pressure on Congress to make sure we see Trump’s taxes before he gets to weigh in on ours by calling on our reps to support a discharge petition to force action on the Presidential Tax Transparency Act. We can find details and scripts at this link from Indivisible: https://www.indivisibleguide.com/resource/presidential-tax-transparency-act/.)

  1. After a devastating earthquake in 2010, over 50,000 Haitians who were in the United States at the time were given permission to remain here due to the disastrous conditions in their country. President Trump has indicated that he may not extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians - which would put thousands of people at risk for deportation back to Haiti, where they will almost certainly face poverty, hunger, and illness. (http://www.nbc-2.com/story/35147474/haiti-refugees-hope-for-immigration-extensions) Let’s send a message to our elected officials and ask for them to fight to keep these protections in place for Haitians – we can do so as part of an effort led by HIAS at this link.  https://www.hias.org/take-action-haitians-facing-deportation

  1. Congress wants to allocate 120 million dollars to offset the protection costs for Trump and his family. 60 million of those funds will be allocated to the Secret Service, of which 23 million will be used for outfitting trump tower with equipment including renting space in the building from Trump and for the frequent the Mar-A-Lago weekend trips. The other 60 million is to reimburse NYC and Palm Beach for law enforcement services used to cover these costs. Let's ask Trump to use Camp David to reduce these ridiculous costs. We already pay security costs for the White House and Camp David. We taxpayers can't afford his lifestyle. http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-protection-secret-service-costs-2017-5 Let's call and email Trump to use Camp David. Let's tell Congress that we can't afford all these vacations and a second residence for his family.  White House: 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500 and/or Phone 1 (202) 456-1111 or Phone 2 (202) 456-1414

  1. Voter ID laws 1) lower voter turnout rates for racial and ethnic minorities, and 2) favor more conservative candidates. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/02/how-voter-id-laws-discriminate-study/517218/ Let’s learn where our states stand on voter ID laws here:  http://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/voter-id.aspx . Then, let’s demand that our state representatives reverse these undemocratic laws. We can do so as individuals, and also as members of Indivisible chapters and other mobilizing groups.

Other Actions

  1. Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue on May 1 was so compelling.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmWWoMcGmo0  Please let’s send a thank you to Kimmel for showing this kind of leadership in sharing his family’s story and standing up for other families: 6834 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028

  1. And more on healthcare…. a repeal/replace vote may take place as soon as this week.  The Freedom Caucus is apparently content with the new revision of Trump’s health care bill; it is less clear what moderate Republicans might do:  http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2017/04/the_freedom_caucus_has_put_moderate_republicans_in_a_corner_over_trumpcare.html  Among other things, this revision would allow states to waive out of providing the 10 “essential health benefits” currently required under the ACA.  The Service Employees International Union, a labor union representing almost 1.9 million workers in over 100 occupations in the United States and Canada (SEIU) is one of many groups urging us to tell Congress to vote NO by calling  866-426-2631. The ACLU provides phone numbers and a useful script for callers: https://www.aclu.org/feature/oppose-aca-repeal

  1. The hearings for Trump's travel bans will be May 8th in Virginia (http://www.politico.com/story/2017/04/donald-trump-travel-ban-federal-appeals-court-case-237084 ) and May 15th in Washington (http://www.politico.com/blogs/under-the-radar/2017/04/hawaii-trump-travel-ban-appeals-court-review-237135 ) In response to these hearings, there will be a #NoMuslimBanEver Campaign from May 8th-15th. During this time, let's all organize, discuss, and take direct action against discrimination and xenophobia. Detailed action items and resources can be found here: https://nobannowallnoraids.wordpress.com/action/nomuslimbanever/ )

  1. It appears to be a very close race in the June 20th Georgia run-off election with Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff and Republican candidate Karen Handel.  It is possible to flip this House seat! http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/331513-ossoff-handel-in-dead-heat-in-ga-race Phone banking will resume around the second week of May for everyone. 1. United to Protect Democracy, a non-profit is suing the Trump administration to protect civil servants from alleged intimidation preventing them from performing their government jobs as Trump's new appointees take their positions. "The nonprofit wrote in the complaints that its mission "is to protect our democracy from descending into a more autocratic form of  government."  http://www.npr.org/2017/05/01/525960279/trump-administration-is-sued-over-alleged-intimidation-of-federal-workers  We can check out this group for updates on their work and progress, or make a donation here:  https://unitedtoprotectdemocracy.org

Petitions to Sign

  1. Let’s join VoteVets in their effort to have Commerce Secretary Wilber Ross resign after he   joked that President Trump's decision to launch 59 missiles into Syria was "in lieu of after-dinner entertainment" while he entertained the Chinese President at Mar-a-Lago.  Here’s what VoteVets said, “Neither we, nor war, are entertainment for Ross and his rich friends at Mar-a-Lago. While it might have served him fine as a CEO, Ross' cavalier attitude about life and death make him wholly unqualified to represent this country at home and abroad.”  Sign here: http://action.votevets.org/page/s/wilbur_ross

  1. Despite all the progress we’ve made for LGBTQ people, since the moment he walked into the White House, Trump has laid out a hateful, damaging agenda aimed at undoing that progress, including talk of an anti-LGBTQ executive order this week. But we’ve come too far to turn back now. It’s time to show that love still wins – Let’s join Sen. Murray and add our names to call on Congress to pass the Equality Act.:  http://www.pattymurray.com/act/its-time-to-pass-the-equality-act

  1. The GOP healthcare proposal is as dangerous as ever, yet reports are coming in that Republican officials believe they have the votes needed for it to pass http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/331337-cohn-i-think-we-have-the-votes-for-healthcare Let's keep calling our Representatives to let them know that we oppose the AHCA. The 65 has a great call script available: http://thesixtyfive.org/home

  1. The House and Senate investigations of Russian influence in the election and the Trump administration are shoddy at best.  http://www.charlotteobserver.com/opinion/op-ed/article147402654.html   Let’ call Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein at 202-514-2101 to ask him how setting up the Special Commission on Trump Russia is going.

  1. Keeping track of the local battles over health care isn’t easy.  Trump has apparently reached a “tentative” agreement this week with Florida Gov. Rick Scott to establish a low income pool to reimburse hospitals for the care of uninsured patients:  https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/30/us/politics/medicaid-expansion-trump-obama-florida.html Even when these pools are not characterized as outright “slush funds,” they are widely understood as providing an alibi for severe reductions in Medicaid coverage, as it seems they would do in FL.  This is a local fight with major national implications on which we should weigh in.  Rick Scott’s office number is (850) 488-7146.

  1. Trump himself is dominating the news cycle to the detriment of other important stories that need attention. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/trumpbeat-10-lessons-from-the-first-100-days/  Child sex trafficking in America is one of those issues. Child sex trafficking is child rape. Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO) has introduced bipartisan legislation to combat the sex trafficking of children on the Internet. https://wagner.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/wagner-introduces-bipartisan-allow-states-and-victims-to-fight-online Let’s tell our MoCs to support the “Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017.” We can’t let Trump block the view to the real problems of the American people.

  1. Rep. Tom MacArthur, a supposed “moderate” Republican from New Jersey, has negotiated changes to Trumpcare that keep the bill alive by undermining ACA’s coverage guarantees for people with pre-existing conditions. (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/26/upshot/what-changed-in-the-health-repeal-plan-to-win-over-the-freedom-caucus.html) We can send him a message that we are going to protect our health care and hold our elected officials accountable if they don’t by pledging to donate to his potential opponent, Obama White House national security aide and RISE Stronger founder Andy Kim, at this link:  https://www.crowdpac.com/campaigns/206479/white-house-national-security-expert-and-rhodes-scholar-considering-running-in-new-jersey-home-district-against-trumpcare-2-0-author.

  2. President Trump has ordered Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke to reevaluate the status of 24 national monument sites. The obvious reason for this action is to open up these sites to drilling, mining, etc. http://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2017/05/01/antiquities-act-bears-ears Let’s write or call Sec. Zinke, but also write or call the governors and senators of each of these states.  If we have any kind of connection to the state or federal representatives or newspapers in any of these states, let’s contact them too.  Let’s tell them we want to spend our tourist dollars visiting these sites and ask them to pressure Sec. Zinke to keep protecting our national treasures. Her is the list of monuments under review, links to info, and all the relevant contact information. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BbG6TNwmyJf9P_x5fc78wUrA9nruRZHgsDT5q6y-zxE/edit?usp=sharing

  1. More than 62 million girls around the world are not attending school. But through the U.S. government’s ‘Let Girls Learn’ initiative, a multilateral effort is putting education technology and a future at their fingertips.” http://blogs.voanews.com/techtonics/2017/04/14/let-girls-learn-partners-bring-education-tech-to-rural-ghana/ Until yesterday, when Trump, in another blow to women, immediately and abruptly ended the program. http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/331387-cnn-trump-ending-michelle-obamas-girls-education-program  Let’s let our legislators know that we think this program is important for the future of our world.

  1. Trump wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post about how he kept his promises in the first 100 days: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/president-trump-in-my-first-100-days-i-kept-my-promise-to-americans/2017/04/29/ad1c9574-2cfd-11e7-a616-d7c8a68c1a66_story.html  His version of reality differs from ours. Let’s take a moment to let him know what we think of his first 100 days: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20500

  1. There are some positive signs that the GOP is taking the Russia investigation more seriously: http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-mcmanus-russia-investigations-20170430-story.html  We need to continue harping on this with our MoCs.

  1. Chief of Staff Reince Priebus put a chill in the air on Sunday morning when he raised the specter again of revisiting libel laws: https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/apr/30/reince-priebus-libel-law-change-media-white-house  Please send him a postcard to remind him of how much we value our free press: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20500  And then, as you are financially able, please support the press outlets that we are relying on so heavily at this time to help us protect our democracy.

  1. Net neutrality is a very confusing, but essential issue with many implications for us all.
    http://www.vox.com/new-money/2017/1/26/14383040/thune-net-neutrality-bill.
The critical point is that, wherever we stand on the issue of net neutrality, leaving it vulnerable to the shifting tides of presidential politics -- which is how it currently stands -- would be bad for everyone. Senator Thune (R-SD) is proposing that Congress pass legislation to help stabilize the regulatory environment known as "net neutrality." Let's thank Senator Thune for sounding bipartisan enough to make the idea of a compromise feasible:
    (202) 224-2321. Let's tell our MoCs, too, that we want them to talk about this issue, which should not be decided by partisan politics.

  1. A bi-partisan Senate bill? Yes! Senators Marco Rubio and Elizabeth Warren have introduced a bill (S.952) to shut down access to the financial system for human traffickers. https://www.rubio.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?id=6CB49782-FD44-4958-A961-3C930855EA75  Let's send postcards and emails to both of our Senators asking them to cosponsor S.952.

  1. Charmaine Yoest, anti-abortion leader, is Trump's nominee for a senior Health and Human Services (HHS) under Secretary Tom Price. http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/trump-names-anti-abortion-leader-charmaine-yoest-high-post-hhs-n752836 Even though our chances of stopping this appointment are slim, our MoC's need to hear from us to know that we object.

  1. Support Yellowstone National Park! Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) is introducing legislation (S.941) to halt mining in Montana's Paradise Valley and Yellowstone.  http://www.livingstonenterprise.com/content/tester-introduces-legislation-permanently-protect-park-doorstep Let's encourage Tester's fellow senator Steve Daines (R-MT) to join Tester in cosponsoring S.941 to protect Yellowstone:  Sen.Steve Daines, 222 N. 32nd St., Ste. 100, Billing MT 59101

  1. The Financial CHOICE Act (H.R. 10) is scheduled for a markup today . This legislation would dismantle Dodd-Frank consumer protections and ease regulations against Wall Street and big banks. There are a couple of calls we can make to voice our opposition. First, let's call the House Financial Services Committee, asking them to vote "no" on H.R.10. 5Calls has the phone number and a call script available: https://5calls.org/issue/recIY5BMUytUixNbV We can also call our own representatives to let them know that we do not support the CHOICE Act. Call scripts are available at the Indivisible Guide website: http://bit.ly/2qlxTAB

  2. It is becoming increasingly clear that policies intended to address climate change also improve public health/ http://www.chgeharvard.org/sites/default/files/resources/CarbonFeeMA.pdf . The study looked at two bills in the Massachusetts legislature that would impose a fee on greenhouse gas emissions. Revenues from the fee would be rebated to households and businesses, and a percentage would go to a green infrastructure fund. The study found that, from 2017-2040, the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants would save lives, reduce hospitalizations, and result in $2.9 billion in cumulative health benefits. Let’s tell our elected state officials to enact carbon fee & rebate legislation. They can use these Massachusetts bills as models: S.1821 An Act Combating Climate Change, https://malegislature.gov/Bills/190/S1821, and H.1726 An Act to Promote Green Infrastructure, Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and Create Jobs, https://malegislature.gov/Bills/190/H1726 .

  1. The Constitution is clear that only Congress may declare war.  The president must obtain approval before any U.S. military action.  In the aftermath of 9/11, Congress hastily passed a sweeping Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) allowing President George W. Bush to attack anyone connected to al Qaeda, anywhere, at any time. The AUMF never expired, and President Barack Obama stretched its limits to take military action against the Islamic State because that terror group is an offshoot of al Qaeda.  However, President Trump bombed Syria in response to Assad’s use of chemical weapons, which was not connected to the Islamic State. It looks like Congress is looking to take responsibility for the war against ISIS by finally holding a debate and vote on whether to authorize any future military action.  http://thehill.com/policy/defense/331103-bipartisan-push-grows-for-new-war-authorization Let’s urge our legislators to act on this so that President Trump does not undertake any new military operations without the approval of Congress.

  1. The “Fiduciary Rule” is an Obama-era consumer protection regulation scheduled to go into effect on June 9, 2017—and it’s under siege by the Trump administration. The rule requires financial advisors to act in their clients’ best interests when providing retirement investment advice. Alexander Acosta, Trump’s new Secretary of Labor, wants to delay and rescind the rule. https://www.usnews.com/news/business/articles/2017-02-19/the-fiduciary-rule-and-you Let’s demand that he preserve it—middle class investors need to know that the professionals they turn to for help are acting solely in their best interests. Secretary Alexander Acosta, Department of Labor, 200 Constitution Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20210, (866) 487-2365.

  1. LINK CORRECTION:  It is customary for the president to welcome the winners of the Teachers of America to the White House for a family-filled celebration; it did not go well this year. Perhaps again, Trump was either not briefed on protocol or chose to ignore it.  Our teachers deserve better. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2017/04/27/trumps-unusual-meeting-with-2017-teachers-of-the-year/?utm_term=.e8dbb552573c Let’s send postcards congratulating the teachers and let them know that WE appreciate them.  More info here: http://www.ccsso.org/ntoy/State_Teachers.html?year=2017

  1. The NCAA has ended its boycott of North Carolina (http://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/327148-ncaa-drops-nc-boycott-over-bathroom-bill) and, despite the introduction in Texas of at least nine anti-LGBTQ bills already this year, will not pull its games out of Texas (https://www.texasobserver.org/anti-lgbt-lawmakers-unveil-slew-of-religious-freedom-bills-despite-business-concerns/ ) Let’s call NCAA president Mark Emmert at 317-917-6905 and urge the NCAA to use its clout to protect LGBTQ students from discrimination across the country.

  1. Thousands and thousands of people are locked behind bars right now in the United States not because they are dangerous or have been convicted of crimes, but just because they do not have the money to make bail. (https://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/16/magazine/the-bail-trap.html) While the Obama administration was starting to push back against this practice, we cannot trust the Trump administration to keep up the fight. For this Mother's Day, groups organizing against mass incarceration are raising funds to bail out moms in jails across the country in time to spend the day with their families. We can support their work by donating at this link:  https://nomoremoneybail.org/.

  1. For those of us who are looking for creative ways to fight back against Trump's agenda, check out Donald Donates. For each tweet that Trump sends out, we can respond by tweeting about which causes or campaigns we have contributed to, and the Donald Donates organization has automated the process: https://donalddonates.com/#/about

  1. Here’s yet another phone app to help you contact your legislators.  It’s called Stance.  https://www.wired.com/2017/03/want-congress-protect-privacy-clever-app-makes-call/  and is available for iOS and Android:  http://www.takeastance.us/

From Checklist for Americans of Conscience:  “A wood-carved pole at the Oregon Country Fair is receiving pushback from members of Native American tribes.”  http://www.wweek.com/culture/2017/04/25/members-of-native-american-tribes-say-oregon-country-fairs-story-pole-is-an-abomination/  It is time for us to help call out privilege and cultural appropriation of Native American culture. 1. Trump’s immigration raids are terrorizing communities. http://www.businessinsider.com/illegal-immigrantion-criminal-records-trump-ice-2017-5 People need to know their rights, how to protect themselves, and what to do when dealing with immigration (ICE) officers. The National Immigration Law Center offers a multi-language Know Your Rights sheet:  https://www.nilc.org/issues/immigration-enforcement/everyone-has-certain-basic-rights/ Let’s get it out there by posting, tweeting, emailing, and otherwise spreading the word.

  1. “It is absurd for Stephen Miller to work on issues that he has spent his life opposing in this case, women’s issues. How is a man who is openly antagonistic to feminism and who has vocally opposed efforts to address the pay gap supposed to be an advisor on women’s issues?”  People for the American Way want us to let Congress know that we do not want Miller in the White House, much less working on women’s issues:  https://secure.pfaw.org/site/SPageNavigator/action.html?survey_id=11962&autologin=true

  1. Trump thought the job of being POTUS would be easier and misses his old life: http://reuters.com/article/idUSKBN17U0CA Let’s encourage him to resign and return to that life: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, DC, 20500

  1. An interesting and in-depth piece about the people and institutions lining up against Trump: https://redux.slate.com/cover-stories/2017/04/who-has-kept-trump-from-destroying-american-democracy-so-far.html  Please pick one person or institution mentioned and send a thank you note (might want to skip the Freedom Caucus!)

  1. In 2015 the internet was classified as a protected utility under the aegis of the FCC; internet providers could no longer block content, slow down traffic, or create “fast lanes” to prioritize websites whose owners pay more. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/03/12/technology/net-neutrality-rules-explained.html Recently, news reports revealed that FCC Chairman Ajit Pai wants to undo the “utility” classification and end the FCC’s role in protecting internet users; companies would instead be asked to voluntarily police themselves (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/26/technology/net-neutrality.html).  Looks like it’s time to weigh in again on net neutrality: Ajit Pai and the FCC can be reached at 1-888-225-5322 and you can file a comment here:  https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/browse-popular-proceedings.

  1. The Working Families Flexibility Act (H.R. 1180) , which is not nearly as helpful as it sounds, has passed out of committee, and is headed to the House floor this Tuesday. http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/labor/327391-comp-time-bill-is-back-and-still-hurts-workers Let's call our Representatives and urge them to oppose this harmful legislation. We can also call the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions to ensure that the Senate version of this bill (S. 801) does not pass. 5Calls has a script available: https://5calls.org/issue/recFlMoKlkl8pX6Jg

  1. Let's tell our MoC that we care about our environment, and will not stand for its protections being stripped away. Sierra Club is offering downloadable Climate Action postcards to help get the point across: http://bit.ly/2oYlaQp

  1. Bernie Sanders and the Democrats have introduced a $15 minimum wage bill. http://thehill.com/regulation/labor/330541-sanders-dems-introduce-15-minimum-wage-bill While this bill has little chance of passing right now, we need to keep the conversation moving forward. Send postcards to all your MoC's letting them know you support a $15 per hour minimum wage.

  1. “Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and 16 members of Florida's congressional delegation, including Republicans and Democrats, are urging the Trump administration to keep the eastern Gulf of Mexico off limits to oil and gas drilling.” http://www.politico.com/states/florida/story/2017/03/nelson-congressional-members-urge-against-oil-drilling-off-florida-110676 Let's ask both of our Senators to support Florida's environment and to say "no" to offshore drilling. Then, let’s encourage legislators from other coastal states to do the same.

  1. Trump’s penchant for ingratiating himself with authoritarian world leaders—Turkey’s Erdogan, Egypt’s el-Sisi, China’s Xi, Russia’s Putin—continues apace with his just-announced White House invitation to the Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, a man widely accused of ordering the extrajudicial killings of thousands of reputed drug suspects: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/30/us/politics/trump-invites-rodrigo-duterte-to-the-white-house.html  While Trump has apparently expressed his “understanding and appreciation” of the “challenges” Duterte faces, we can let Trump know what we think of his embrace of Duterte by calling the White House comment line at 202-456-1111.

  1. Martha McSally (R-AR) introduced a measure on 4/27/17 to prevent the members of Congress from getting an exemption from the AHCA. Her bill will repeal the exemption from certain provisions for congress including preconditions. “Representatives should have to abide by the very same options for coverage as their constituents, and anything short of that is simply hypocrisy. Congress must live by the rules it creates.”
  2. https://mcsally.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/us-rep-mcsally-introduces-bill-eliminate-healthcare-exemption-members  Let’s call and thank her for the bill, and let's call our reps and SAY NO to the exemption for members of Congress.  That's an entitlement that they don't deserve over the needs of the American people.

  1. In another example of his lack of knowledge in the area, “Trump blamed the constitutional checks and balances built in to US governance. “It’s a very rough system,” he said. “It’s an archaic system … It’s really a bad thing for the country.””  The Bannon influence continues to raise havochttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/apr/29/trump-blames-constitution-for-first-100-days-chaos-presidency  It is time for us to up our calls for getting Bannon out of the White House.

May Day (May 1) internationally has traditionally been a celebration of workers: http://www.iww.org/history/library/misc/origins_of_mayday The USA has had May Day workers’ marches for years and immigrants have been a part of those marches, particularly in the past ten years..  Given recent circumstances, it is expected that the immigrant participation will be bigger than it has in years:  https://www.thenation.com/article/mondays-may-day-marches-could-be-the-biggest-in-years/  Beyond The Moment is sponsoring actions in support of immigrant and workers rights—marches, protests, strikes—are planned all across the country for May Day, this coming Monday, May 1st.  To find one near you, check out  https://beyondthemoment.org/may-day/

  1. TransCanada needs to get approval before they can route Keystone XL through Nebraska. The National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) has a great write up by Anthony Swift, which explores how the risks of this pipeline greatly outweigh the benefits: https://www.nrdc.org/experts/anthony-swift/keystone-xl-tar-sands-pipeline-still-bad-idea The Nebraska Public Service Commission is currently taking public comment. Let's urge them to reject TransCanada's permit application. Nebraska PSC online resources, including the public comment form: http://www.psc.nebraska.gov/natgas/Keystone_Pipeline.html

Indiana Ave, Bloomington IN 47405-7000, Attn: Lauren Robel, Provost

  1. The Heartland Institute, a conservative think tank known for its attacks on climate science has been trying to influence the teaching of climate science in U.S. public schools and colleges: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/27/opinion/sowing-climate-doubt-among-schoolteachers.html  Heartland has already sent 200,000 unsolicited copies of its “Why Scientists Disagree About Global Warming” to science teachers and hopes to reach every science teacher in the country before they're done: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/03/29/a-political-organization-that-doubts-climate-science-is-sending-this-book-to-200000-teachers/  The National Science Teachers Association has alerted its members to the dubious claims Heartland is disseminating-- http://static.nsta.org/pdfs/HeartlandLetter.pdf --but we, as parents and educators, need to keep our eyes on this and similar efforts. Let’s make sure our local schools are not using this to develop curriculum

  1. It is customary for the president to welcome the winners of the Teachers of America to the White House for a family-filled celebration; it did not go well this year.

  1. The Trump budget will create a $75 million funding gap in the United Nations Population Fund.  This funding is critical to ensuring that women around the world are able to receive critical health care, including safe childbirth."The removal of support, a loss of US$75 million for UNFPA, is a blow to an agency that ensures access to contraception and maternal and child health services, and fights against gender violence, child marriage, and female genital mutilation in more than 150 countries worldwide."  However, the US is falsely presenting it as a coercive abortion agency.  http://thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(17)30995-9/fulltext  Let’s tell our legislators that we want this funding to continue.  Let’s also show the world that even if our government does not value the work of the UNPF, we do.  We can donate here:   https://www.friendsofunfpa.org/netcommunity/sslpage.aspx?pid=767

  1. Just imagine if your cable company could decide to slow down a competitor’s streaming service while supercharging their own mediocre offering!  Or if certain political speech couldn’t be viewed without taking 10 minutes to load because they don’t have deep pockets?
