1.    This week in Congress:  The House is on recess until Tuesday, June 5 (House 2018 calendar) and the Senate has a state work period till Monday, June 4 (Senate 2018 calendar). Let's try to see our legislators in person if they have any events in our states.

2.   There was a lot going on over the weekend. One especially strange thing that happened is that Trump cried “fake news” via Twitter about a White House source he claimed did not exist although there is audio of the briefing:  http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/389526-audio-revealed-from-source-trump-claimed-doesnt-exist   Let’s let our MoC know that the constant lying and gas-lighting are hurting our nation.

3.   The story that the government lost 1500 unaccompanied refugee children is getting a lot of press and public outrage, as it should, however the situation is complicated.  An immigration attorney offers some insight:  https://www.bustle.com/p/the-us-lost-1475-migrant-children-this-twitter-thread-explains-what-that-actually-means-9219673  and in response, a border legal services worker offered even more:  https://twitter.com/AlOtroLado_Org/status/1001182863025364993  Let’s tell our MoCs that it is time to redesign how these children are handled and treated.

4.   Patrick Wyrick, who is on Trump’s Supreme Court shortlist in spite of having only served as a judge since last year, has been nominated to be a federal judge in the Western District of Oklahoma. (https://abovethelaw.com/2018/05/more-judicial-nominations-from-president-trump-and-more-judicial-emergencies/). A member of the ultra-conservative Federal Society, Wyrick repeatedly worked with Scott Pruitt to sue the EPA, defended unconstitutional limits on contraception, and was accused of actively misleading the Supreme Court on a death penalty case. Let’s tell our senators we want them to hold him accountable and vote no.

5.   The Trump administration is continuing to try to wall us off from the rest of the world, proposing  that anyone seeking a visa to visit the United States be required to allow the State Department to review their last five years’ worth of social media posts (https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/03/trump-admin-wants-to-track-14-million-us-visitors-social-media-history/). This invasive step is likely to drive away students, tourists and business from our country. Today is the FINAL DAY to submit comments in opposition to this change. Let’s make sure we do so here.

6.   No one crossing the border to seek asylum is breaking any law.  Trump is trying to make us think it so.  It is a policy his administration put into place in early May and if these people have children, they are being separated from their parents.  http://thehill.com/opinion/immigration/389101-immigrant-women-children-need-protection-from-gangs-not-to-be-treated  “Angered that the flow of refugees does not stop and that Congress will not give him his wall, the president has devised a policy that turns the bodies and psyches of refugee children into battlefields. The people of the United States must not allow him to implement it.”  Let’s let our MoCs that we do not condone this at all and want to see legislation to stop it.

7.   After the “gang of eight” meeting last week, McConnell said he supports the Mueller investigation.  http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/389314-mcconnell-says-he-backs-mueller-probe-after-classified-briefing  Let’s ask him to show his support by bringing the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act (S. 2644) to a vote.  Let’s also ask our own senators to co-sponsor the bill.

8.  Alida Garcia, a political & public affairs strategist who focuses on immigration shared this tweet on May 24: “I work full time on federal immigration policy - like it’s literally how I spend 70-80 hours a week, and I can’t even keep up with the velocity of policy changes from his administration. They are on a clearly delineated mission to cause tremendous harm & no one seems to care.”   Let’s see what else Alida Garcia has to say and follow her suggestions for what to do:  https://drive.google.com/open?id=145lEflkeItahY9Zp3XZERm_aFb_QwFYv

9.   The ACLU is warning that the 17+ year-old Project Safe Neighborhoods grant program is up for reauthorization, and under US Attorney General Jeff Sessions, will feed the failed war on drugs and exacerbate mass incarceration. Let’s read about it here, https://www.aclu.org/blog/criminal-law-reform/reforming-police-practices/house-could-soon-give-jeff-sessions-50-million , and let’s tell our US House reps that we don’t want them issuing a $50 million check for Session’s war on drugs.

Other Actions

1.    Hundreds of groups and organizations nationwide in calling for a public health approach to preventing school and community gun violence.  https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2018/03/07/590877717/experts-say-here-s-how-to-prevent-the-next-school-shooting  Another school district in MI just joined in:  http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2018/05/treat_gun_violence_like_public.html Let’s call our local school districts and see if they have signed on yet.

2.   On Sunday, China granted the First Daughter's company final approval for its 13th trademark in the last three months, trademark office records show. Over the same period, the Chinese government has granted Ivanka Trump's company provisional approval for another eight trademarks, which can be finalized if no objections are raised during a three-month comment period. Taken together, the trademarks could allow her brand to market a lifetime's worth of products in China, from baby blankets to coffins, and a host of things in between, including perfume, make-up, bowls, mirrors, furniture, books, coffee, chocolate and honey. Ivanka Trump stepped back from management of her brand and placed its assets in a family-run trust, but she continues to profit from the business.  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ivanka-trump-wins-13-new-trademarks-from-china-in-3-months/  Like father, like daughter . . .  the Trump family continue to take advantage of political connections for personal profit.  We can continue to boycott her brand here in the US.

3.   One significant bulwark of resistance to arming teachers as a way to stop school shootings is the insurance companies, some of which have concluded, as one Kansas school insurer puts it, that “concealed handguns on school premises [pose] a heightened liability risk.” United Educators, which specializes in insuring schools and currently serves 1600 of them, remains “agnostic” on the subject of arming teachers: http://www.post-gazette.com/news/nation/2018/05/28/Insurance-companies-become-a-big-roadblock-to-plans-to-arm-teachers/stories/201805020397  Let’s tell United Educators that we are not agnostic--and hope they will refrain from offering insurance to “concealed carry” schools: UE President and CEO Janice M. Abraham, jabraham@ue.org or 7700 Wisconsin Ave. # 500, Bethesda, MD 20814 or 301-907-4908.

4.   Remember these awesome women in West Virginia?
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/features/trump-west-virginia/ They are still here, still fighting the good fight, and they’re starting up a local newspaper called Appalachian Views: 2nd Story Press to fight the censoring of progressive voices in rural West Virginia. Let’s help them launch their first issue by donating to their crowdfunding effort: https://www.gofundme.com/AppalachianViewsfromthe2ndStoryPress

Marches/events/webinars/Tweetstorms to attend/organize

1.    Grabbing Back is the documentary following Tanzie Youngblood, Tamara Harris and Stephany Rose Spaulding on the campaign train. The film's historical contribution is invaluable as we witness a rise in women candidates, especially black women candidates work to level the playing field for all Americans. We can join Action Together Network’s Twitterstorm to spread the word about this film and gain support for it this evening, May 29, from 8-9 pm Eastern Time. We can click here for prewritten tweets to send out then:  Tweetsheet bit.ly/2J2y2SX We can learn more about the film on their kickstarter page here:  https://kck.st/2krILsc

2.   June 1st has been designated the National Day of Action for Children by, among others, the National Domestic Workers Alliance.  There will be protests around the country of the new Homeland Security policy which separates undocumented children as young as one year old from their parents--even legitimate asylum seekers--at the border, and puts them, according to John Kelly  “in foster care or whatever”: http://www.businessinsider.com/john-kelly-family-separation-policy-illegal-border-crossing-2018-5  For more information, we can check here: https://actionnetwork.org/event_campaigns/families-belong-together

3.   This weekend, June 1-3, “People around the country are coming together with a simple message: there's more we can do to end gun violence.” Let’s check here to find a Wear Orange Weekend” sponsored by Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Safety event near us:   http://act.everytown.org/event/wear-orange-2018/search/

4.   Rallies, on June 14, in support of the missing immigrant children are being coordinated all over the country.  “The March for Stolen Children is a peaceful event. Everyone participating in this event will be required to abide by all applicable laws and lawful orders of authorities." We can use this link to create a rally near us:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeFqhCwGsoZOua_tompfPhoPmi0Qx9je3iAskumf3ZhflhvWg/viewform

1.    FL: Publix supermarkets says its suspending political contributions after Parkland students called for a boycott and staged "die in" protests at several stores Friday. Let's read more here. Along with the students' efforts, our phone calls, emails and postcards helped Publix get to this position. If we are Floridians who want to see Publix give the same contribution to an anti-gun group that they gave to NRA "A+ rated" gubernatorial candidate Adam Putnam, let's keep boycotting and keep the pressure on. We can see their statement about the contributions and contact Publix on-line here. Please note Rogan's Listers: we CAN make a difference with our wallets.

Reading/Watching

1.    Experts in authoritarianism advise us to keep a list of things subtly changing around us, so we’ll remember.  Amy Siskind is keeping that list for us. Amy writes, "This week had numerous examples of assaults on the First Amendment, including arrests of high school students protesting gun violence, media outlets being barred from an EPA event, and NFL owners banning public protests by their players in an effort to appease Trump."  Let's review Amy Siskind's list week 80

On May 7, Jeff Sessions announced a policy change that the Justice Department would do their best to prosecute every adult who crossed the border illegally, even if some of them were legitimate asylum seekers.  When a parent was arrested, the children would immediately be taken into custody and “put in foster care or whatever”, as John Kelly said.  http://www.businessinsider.com/john-kelly-family-separation-policy-illegal-border-crossing-2018-5   and  https://www.msnbc.com/all-in/watch/trump-administration-separating-parents-and-children-at-border-1242280003606.  Trump is blaming Democrats for laws that require separating children from parents, but there is no such law:  https://www.factcheck.org/2018/05/trump-blames-own-border-policy-on-democrats/#.WwqzndjxZSg.facebook  Here is what we can do:

1.    Please write to or email Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen: Email:DHSSecretary@hq.dhs.gov or Snail Mail: Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Department of Homeland Security, Washington, DC 20528 or Twitter: @SecNielsen  (for a script, see here)

2.   The immigrant-youth led action network United We Dream, which we can follow on Twitter here, is organizing people to call their members of  Congress Tuesday through Thursday to demand an end to the violence against families by defunding CBP and ICE. You can find the tool and sign up to make the call here.  (for a script, see here)

3.   Congress has the oversight power to stop parents and children from being torn apart at the border. Let's demand they use it. 5Calls has scripts and numbers ready for our use at this link.

4.   There is plenty to be done in the long run to stop these abuses and create an immigration policy that ensures fairness, justice, decency and dignity for all - including the undocumented. Leading the way in that fight is the undocumented-led organization Cosecha, which mobilizes strikes and direct actions. We can learn more and sign up to get involved here.

5.   Contact our Members of Congress (both Senators and one representative). Our messaging can be very brief – these policies and actions are abhorrent and do not represent who we are as a nation.

6.   Join the ACLU in asking Kevin K. McAleenan, Commissioner of United States Customs and Border Protection to intervene and make safety a priority for these children:  https://action.aclu.org/petition/cbp-stop-abusing-children

We can make donations here:

1.    The Florence Project whose “mission is to provide free legal and social services to detained adults and unaccompanied children facing immigration removal proceedings in Arizona. Our vision is to ensure that all immigrants facing removal have access to counsel, understand their rights under the law, and are treated fairly and humanely.” http://firrp.org

3.   Support Kids at the Border: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/kidsattheborder

4.   Activists on the ground have been fighting for children’s rights in the immigration system for a long time. Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) ensure that no child appears in immigration court without high quality legal representation, representing undocumented immigrant and refugee kids in deportation proceedings pro bono. They also advocate for laws, policies and practices that strengthen due process and fairness for kids in the immigration system. We can learn more about them at their website here, donate to them here, and follow them on Twitter to amplify their work here.

There is also an issue of “lost” children who came across the border as unaccompanied minors, that is, without an adult with them.  As this story comes to light, it seems that it is questionable if the children are really lost.  Here is what happened:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2018/05/27/the-u-s-lost-track-of-1500-immigrant-children-last-year-heres-why-people-are-outraged-now/?utm_term=.91328732fe83   More information will surface and will be shared.

1.    Immigrant children, both unaccompanied and those take from their parents, are having very difficult, often abusive, times in detention and often at the hands of those in positions of authority over them.  https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/05/23/613907893/aclu-report-detained-immigrant-children-subjected-to-widespread-abuse-by-officia Let’s tell our MoCs that this has to stop and a congressional investigation is in order.  While we are at it, let’s also tell the same to the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen:  https://www.dhs.gov/contact-us   or DHSSecretary@hq.dhs.gov

2.   In February, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act (S. 1917). This bipartisan bill would fight back against mass incarceration, as it "reduces mandatory minimum penalties for nonviolent repeat drug offenders, eliminates the three-strike mandatory life in prison rule and gives judges discretion to sentence certain low-level offenders below the 10-year mandatory minimum," (http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/374045-prison-sentencing-bill-advances-over-sessions-objections). Let's check to see if our senators are among the twenty-seven cosponsors, and if they are, thank them for their support. If they are not, let's urge them to cosponsor S. 1917, an important step towards ending mass incarceration.

3.   In order to help pay for the tax cut, Trump is considering cutting back on the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), in essence, taking money away from sick children to cover the wants of the wealthy.  http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-rescission-bill-details-cuts-to-chip-healthcare-2018-5   The Democrats in Congress have a better idea:  rescind the tax cuts and use the money to pay our nation’s teachers better.  https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/democrats-propose-funding-teacher-pay-raises-by-canceling-tax-cuts-for-the-wealthy  Let’s tell our MoCs that we like this idea of supporting teachers and will be voting for candidates that champion that goal.

4.   Today, black families in the U.S. still face economic and social inequalities that have come as a direct result of slavery. This is perpetuated with systemic racism throughout modern institutions, which maintains inequality, rather than working towards equity. One way to fight back against this is through reparations, in which black individuals, families, and communities receive financial compensation (http://time.com/132034/a-legal-and-moral-basis-for-reparations/). While it is unlikely that reparations would be made under the Trump administration, we can begin the process by passing the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act (H.R. 40). Let's contact our representatives and ask them to cosponsor and support this much-needed legislation.

5.   White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has said that it bothers her to be called a liar: http://thehill.com/homenews/media/388965-sarah-sanders-being-called-a-liar-bothers-me  Let’s take a moment to let her know that it bothers us to be lied to: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington DC 20500 or on Twitter @PressSec

6.   11 separate investigations are underway against Scott Pruitt for allegations ranging from blatant corruption to waste of taxpayer funds (https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/02/politics/scott-pruitt-investigations/index.html). It’s time for him to go, and members of both parties should be able to say so. Let’s check out this resource from the #BootPruitt campaign and see if our members of Congress have called for him to step down yet – and if they haven’t, contact them and ask why.

7.   The every-five-year FAA Reauthorization Act (H.R. 4) has passed the House and is on its way to the Senate.  Thankfully, the House version includes a now-mandatory 10-hour rest period that matches that of the flight deck crew.  https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/flight-attendants-cheer-passage-of-house-faa-reauthorization-bill-with-rest-provisions-and-more-300638193.html  Let’s make sure our senators know that this is a safety feature they need to make sure stays in their version of the bill.

Other Actions

1.    Without consulting the NFL Players Association, NFL owners have passed a policy which would fine players who kneel during the national anthem (http://time.com/5288795/nfl-national-anthem-kneeling-rule/). Political commentator and ESPN's SportsNation co-host LZ Granderson appeared on PBS NewsHour and addressed why this is problematic, and proposed a very simple solution for those who do not want sports to be politicized: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/are-new-nfl-penalties-for-kneeling-purely-about-the-bottom-line We can contact NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and offer the same recommendation: E-mail: roger.goodell@nfl.com Twitter: @NFLCommish We can also direct our energy towards players like Colin Kaepernick, who helped initiate the national anthem protests in order to bring attention to police brutality and systemic racism and oppression. Let's thank Kaepernick for all that he has done to help underserved communities across the U.S. on Twitter: @Kaepernick7 or Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kaepernick7/ To learn about more about his work, including the Million Dollar Pledge and the Know Your Rights camp, we can also check out his website http://kaepernick7.com/

2.   Trump took to Fox and Friends on Thursday morning to say of players who kneel “You shouldn’t be playing, you shouldn’t be there. Maybe they shouldn’t be in the country.”
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/389133-trump-maybe-you-shouldnt-be-in-the-country-if-you-cant-stand  If we have not already made a clear-eyed decision about our own interactions with the NFL, this seems like the time. And let’s let the NFL know what we think of their decision to not address the need for kneeling, nor the domestic violence perpetrated by their players, nor brain injuries that continue to happen on their fields:  National Football League, 345 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10154 or on Twitter @NFL

3.   During the middle of the 20th Century, the U.S. maintained a strong bond between its research universities and the public, through which the country supported scholars and was rewarded with levels of innovation and social benefit since unmatched. It is this collaboration that brought us the Apollo space program, cancer treatment breakthroughs, and the internet. Our many current challenges require a renewal of this now-flagging partnership, and though individual scholars have always forged alliances with government and other public institutions, more must be done at the higher administrative levels of universities. Each one of our alma maters (or our kids') has an office/department of research, so let's ask them what public partnership opportunities the university is developing. https://theconversation.com/a-new-bond-between-the-public-and-universities-could-brighten-americas-future-91622

4.   With the Trump administration abandoning efforts to hold police accountable for misconduct, it’s up to us to make more noise than ever. Activists in Alabama are pushing for the local district attorney to drop the charges filed against Chikesia Clemons after police used excessive force against her in arresting her at a Waffle House (https://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2018/04/chikesia_clemons_speaks_out_ab.htmlhttps://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2018/04/chikesia_clemons_speaks_out_ab.html). 5.   Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said Tuesday that it’s up to individual schools to decide whether to call U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if they suspect their students are undocumented. “That’s a school decision. It’s a local community decision,” DeVos said. Let's read more about this at Politico.  Let's contact our local schools, school boards and community leaders to let them know that we oppose creating a hostile learning environment for children and want them to make public statements protecting our vulnerable kids from ICE raids.

6.   Amazon Web Services is collaborating with several law enforcement bodies to deploy its facial recognition technologies in criminal investigations. With its immense resources, Amazon could create surveillance systems that would enable policing abuses on a massive scale, especially when these partnerships are developed outside of public scrutiny (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/22/technology/amazon-facial-recognition.html). Let's join the ACLU in encouraging Amazon to stay true to its commitment to put people first and end its abetment of mass surveillance: https://action.aclu.org/petition/amazon-stop-selling-surveillance

8.   Well-known political satirist, Andy Borowitz, now has a line of merchandising named for his “Make America Not Embarrassing Again” tour.  All proceeds go to the International Rescue Committee to help the world's refugees.  We can check out and order the goods here:  https://manea-merchandise.myshopify.com/

9.   UltraViolet is running a campaign to get Google to do a better job of letting women search for abortion clinics. "All over the country, women who search for 'abortion clinic near me' are shown ads for what appears to be abortion clinics but are actually so-called "crisis pregnancy centers" (CPCs)--fake clinics run by right-wing extremists who lure women then manipulate or harass them out of getting an abortion." We can sign UltraViolet's petition here:  https://act.weareultraviolet.org/sign/google_cpc_lies/

1.    FL: Publix Super Markets has been Florida’s go-to grocer for decades, but some longtime shoppers are turning against the store over its support of Republican, NRA "A+" rated, gubernatorial candidate Adam Putnam. Dozens of people are taking to social media to #TweetTheReceipt, posting photos of receipts at stores other than Publix. They are also urging people to boycott Publix during Memorial Day weekend. We can read more at WFLA News. If we are Floridians, let's participate in the weekend boycott if not a longer one. If we're on Twitter, let's join the #TweetTheReceipt movement too.
