Some reports are stating that the call volume on the Senate health care bill is nowhere near the volume of calls during the House version.

Let’s change that!  CALL!!

1. THE CBO score on the Senate healthcare bill is out, and it confirms our worst fears.  The Senate’s version of Trumpcare would raid $772 billion from Medicaid by 2026 ― BEFORE the largest cuts kick in; 15 million Americans would lose their coverage next year, and that number would climb to 22 million by 2026.  As Sen. Warren tweeted yesterday, “A bill that kicks 22 million people off insurance to deliver $569 billion in tax giveaways to rich people is not a "health care" bill.”  Four Republican senators have voiced their doubts about the Trumpcare bill: Shelley Moore Capito (WV) 202-224-6472, Bill Cassidy (LA) 202-224-5824, Lisa Murkowski (AK) 202-224-6665, and Rob Portman (OH) 202-224-3353. Let’s push them to vote their objections!

2. Sen. 4. It is really go time on health care and all our voices matter. Kellyanne Conway took to the airwaves over the weekend to say that there are no Medicaid cuts in spite of $800 billion in projected cuts. 6. The last three administrations have held an annual iftar dinner during the month of Ramadan with members of the Muslim-American community. While the WH released a statement to commemorate Eid on Saturday evening, we should be aware that they are choosing not to continue the tradition. 7. The Senate's Russian sanctions bill (S.722) has stalled due to a procedural snafu  http://time.com/4831779/house-russia-iran-sanctions-bill/ The Senate can now either tweak its bill, introduce a new one, or the House can introduce identical legislation to ensure there is no further delay. Let's call our MoC to let them know that we support sanctions against Russia. 8. While the Russia investigation has been appointed a special counsel, we still do not have an independent commission. While the special counsel is beneficial in seeking criminal charges, the independent commission does not have to answer to the DOJ, and would be able to make public even non-criminal actions. Let's call our MoC and let them know that we have not forgotten about the need for an independent commission. State-level actions

1. Although chief justices of the Supreme Courts of California, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island (so far) have publicly condemned it, ICE continues to stalk and arrest immigrants in courthouses across the country—most recently in a NY Human Trafficking Intervention Court meant to protect the victims of human trafficking.  Though ICE insists that they pursue only those who threaten the public safety, the presence of their plainclothes agents have deterred immigrants, documented and undocumented, from appearing in court for fear of deportation: http://www.thedailybeast.com/legal-immigrants-fear-getting-arrested-in-court-by-ice  There are two things we can do: press the chief justices of our states to voice their opposition to ICE’s tactics and urge our state legislators to insist that courthouses, like schools and hospitals, be made off-limits to ICE.

1. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) tweeted last Friday, “Just got the phone totals this week. 387 calls opposed to GOP health bill. 0 call in support. Zero. Never seen anything like this.”   If we are in CT, let’s make those against the bill numbers soar.  Murphy may be impressed with those numbers, but we aren’t.  We know there are more than 387 of us in CT who are against it.  In fact, if these numbers are at all representative of the call level to our senators, we ALL need to make sure we call our senators!  Let’s not appease ourselves thinking that others will do it for us.  Let’s make all the senators phone totals go off the charts.  Call now! 

2. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants to vote on the GOP's healthcare bill by the end of this week.  Indivisible has identified senators in 10 states who are most likely to be swayed. We should *all* call our senators to block this terrible bill, which guts Medicaid among other things, but those of us who live in the following 10 states really need to turn up the heat: Alaska, West Virginia, Maine, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Arkansas. 10. Senate Republicans are aiming for a health care vote as soon as Thursday. This week, the House of Representatives will vote on a bill that requires cities to follow unconstitutional orders and denies local law enforcement crucial funding if they decide to instead focus on real threats to public safety, putting us in jeopardy. 13.   Trump has nominated Steven Bradbury for General Counsel of the Transportation Department.  Bradbury wrote the memos authorizing torture under the more friendly term "enhanced interrogation techniques."  http://www.politico.com/story/2017/06/05/trump-nominee-torture-bradbury-239167  While this position does not require Congressional approval, let's tell all of our MoC's that we oppose this nomination. 

State-level actions

1. Missouri’s Senate is considering legislation that would allow employers and landlords to discriminate against women who use birth control or have had abortions. 2. Massachusetts residents—Let’s advance two climate change-fighting bills pending in the state legislature by showing our support for them and getting them out of committee. H 1726, An Act to Promote Green Infrastructure, Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and Create Jobs, and S 1821, An Act Combating Climate Change, impose fees on carbon pollution (with provisions protecting low-income people.  https://climate-xchange.org/massachusetts-campaign/about-the-bill/ Let’s contact our state reps and tell them that we want them to pass this legislation ASAP.

3. David Daley, publisher of the Connecticut Mirror, has an excellent piece on gerrymandering on On The Media: http://www.wnyc.org/story/how-election-actually-rigged/  In it, he points out that the Democrats would do better to focus on upcoming gubernatorial races than House races that are already rigged by Republican gerrymandering.  In six of these races, the governor has the power to veto the wildly imbalanced district maps the Republicans have historically pushed through.  These states are VA, OH, PA, WI, MI, and FL.  We should work hard, beginning now, to win these elections--and to make sure the Democratic party understands their importance and provides the resources needed to win them.  Let’s contact the DNC: https://my.democrats.org/page/s/contact-the-democrats or 202-863-8000.

6. The Senate healthcare proposal continues the attack on Planned Parenthood http://bit.ly/2rVFlnN Planned Parenthood provides medical care for those most in need, yet the GOP bill would strip Medicaid reimbursements from the organization for a full year. Let's call our Senators and let them know that we will continue to oppose any legislation that attempts to defund Planned Parenthood. 9. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has selected a CEO of a for-profit lender to run the student loan system.  This information was absent from the release about A. 11. Donald Trump and Jeff Sessions may be demanding a return to the most destructive policies of the failed War on Crime, but there's still a bipartisan majority in Congress in favor of effective criminal justice reform, and we need to show them we still want them working together for change. Senators from both parties have come together to introduce the Fair Chance Act, which would bar federal employers and contractors from asking applicants about their criminal history until the final stage of the process. This will help make sure the formerly incarcerated get a fair shake at finding employment. 12. We know that neither scientific expertise nor ethics matter to Trump and his minions, but it’s apparently time, again, to let Scott Pruitt know that both matter to us. State-level actions

1. We really need to direct more attention toward what's happening at the state level, where lobbyists for powerful business interests are also trying to push legislation to avoid regulation and corporate taxation.  "[A]s a growing number of cities consider and increasingly pass soda taxes and other measures designed to combat obesity and promote healthy eating, the food industry has turned to a strategy used extensively by the tobacco and gun lobbies.
