Many newspapers, including New York Times and Washington Post require subscriptions, but without one we can see a few articles each month.  We can also check with our local libraries to find out how to get online access through them.

1.      The head of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Javier Palomarez, has resigned from Trump’s National Diversity Council due to the rescinding of DACA:http://www.abc15.com/news/national/hispanic-business-leader-ill-quit-wh-council-if-trump-ends-daca  You can read his own statement about his decision here:https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/05/opinion/javier-palomarez-trump-diversity-coalition.html  Let’s take a moment to thank Palomarez for resigning:http://ushcc.com/contact-us/

2.      The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops came out with a statement condemning the rescinding of DACA and calling on Congress to find a legislative solution: http://www.usccb.org/news/2017/17-157.cfm Let’s say thanks to them also:http://www.usccb.org/about/contact-us.cfm and then be in touch with our own MoC to demand action to secure the futures of DACA recipients.

3.      "U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) today (September 5, 2017) are submitting a brief with the Supreme Court in a case that could address wildly partisan gerrymandering of political districts and loosen the grip of special interests on American politics. In their friend-of-the-court brief, the senators describe the effects of hyper-partisan redistricting and special interest influence in Washington, and call on the Court to adopt a new standard for assessing the constitutionality of partisan gerrymandering. Americans do not like gerrymandering,” the senators write. “They see its mischief, and absent a legal remedy, their sense of powerlessness and discouragement has increased, deepening the crisis of confidence in our democracy. We share this perspective. From our vantage point, we see wasted votes and silenced voices. We see hidden power. And we see a correctable problem.”  https://www.mccain.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=press-releases&id=A3CC57F7-0ED9-4FB9-AAF3-872CBB81874B  Lets thank senators McCain and Whitehouse for stepping up and addressing the partisan gerrymandering and special interest money.

4.      Some Congressional Republicans are trying to use the passage of the Dream Act as a bargaining chip for border wall funding http://politi.co/2eWfcMP Let's call our MoC and make sure that they support DREAMers with a clean passage of the Dream Act of 2017. We can also sign CREDO Action's petition https://act.credoaction.com/sign/trump_daca

5.      The Center for American Progress has created a Dream Act Toolkit, which enables us to more easily contact swing vote MoC regarding the House and Senate Dream Acts. The toolkit includes each MoC's phone number, as well as links we can use to tweet at each MoC. Let's take advantage of the great tool and do what we can to get the Dream Act passed ASAP https://dreamacttoolkit.org/

6.      It is imperative that Congress raise the debt ceiling to keep the government functioning. Currently, the GOP is at odds whether the bill should include funding for Hurricane Harvey relief, be a clean bill, or include funding for a border wall http://bit.ly/2eFlVKH Let's let our MoC know that a clean bill, or a bill that would include funding for Hurricane Harvey relief, should be supported. We can use the script at 5calls as a starting point for the conversation http://bit.ly/2j3pcID

7.      From 5 Calls:  McCain has flipped positions on healthcare, now supports the Graham-Cassidy ACA repeal bill! We only have a few weeks to stop this. Call Senators NOW. OPPOSE GOP'S LAST-DITCH EFFORT TO REPEAL THE ACA:  https://5calls.org/issue/recT4p3RFsud6rxuf  [background reading here:   http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/349462-mccain-backs-graham-cassidy-obamacare-repeal-effort]

8.      Mind the kleptocracy. “[F]or the first time in US history, wealthy people with interests before the government have a chance for close and confidential access to the president as a result of payments that enrich him personally. It is a view of the president available to few other Americans.”  https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/09/06/trump-gets-millions-golf-members-ceos-and-lobbyists-get-access-president/632505001/ As the swamp get swampier, let’s do the following:
·         Tell our MoCs to pass veto-proof, with-teeth legislation clarifying that the American Presidency is for the American people and not up for sale.
·         Blow the whistle on Trump using this form from the House Oversight Committee:
·         Share this story far and wide:

State Actions

1.      NY: State Assembly member Nily Rozic is "proposing a bill to rename a state park named after President Donald Trump in honor of the woman run down by a white supremacist in Charlottesville last month. A bill set to be introduced by Assembly Member Nily Rozic directs the commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to change the name of the park to 'Heather D. Heyer State Park.'"  https://www.buzzfeed.com/darrensands/new-york-official-pushes-to-rename-trump-park-for-heather?utm_term=.xprGQ3q2Z#.rqp8BEV0W You can sign Rozic's petition in support of renaming the park here:  http://assembly.state.ny.us/member_files/025/2017_77098/petition77098.php

Other Actions

1.      "Lunch at New York City public schools will be available free of charge to all 1.1 million students beginning this school year, Carmen Fariña, the schools chancellor, said on Wednesday in the basement cafeteria of a Hell’s Kitchen elementary school. This move has been long sought by food-policy advocates and many members of the New York City Council, who said that some students would prefer to go hungry rather than admit they cannot afford to pay for lunch. Nationally, the practice of “lunch shaming” — holding children publicly accountable for unpaid school lunch bills — has garnered attention.  The vast majority of New York City public school students are poor: About 75 percent of them had already qualified for free or reduced-price lunches, officials said, and in New York City those who qualified for the lower cost received it for free, as well. Still, the new initiative will reach an additional 200,000 students and save their families about $300 per year. The full price for a school lunch is $1.75 per day."   https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/06/nyregion/free-lunch-new-york-city-schools.html  Let's encourage all of our cities to feed the children in our poorer school districts. A full stomach leads to better focus, better education and no bullying or embarrassment.

Petitions

1.      Even as Wells Fargo argues in court that claims of wrongdoing against them must be brought one-by-one in the secretive arbitration process, the Senate is considering repealing a recent rule from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that would restrict forced arbitration (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-08-30/wall-street-lobbyists-descend-on-obscure-senator-before-big-vote). Let’s join Americans for Financial Reform in writing our senators and telling them to stand with us and not the big banks: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/senators-support-my-right-to-a-day-in-court.

2.      Our advocacy has successfully stopped Donald Trump and Ryan Zinke from eliminating any national monuments, but they are still pushing for an unprecedented assault on public lands with their proposed boundary changes (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/08/24/handful-national-monuments-targeted-changes/599877001/). But they’ll need congressional approval to do so, so we have another opportunity to stop them. Let’s join the Sierra Club in calling on our members of Congress to block this attempt to shrink our national monuments: https://sierra.secure.force.com/actions/National?actionId=AR0086209.

Marches/events/teleconferences to attend/organize

1.      If we can’t be in DC with the March from Charlottesville to DC to Confront White Supremacy, we can keep watch on the activities via their Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/cville2DC/

Reading/Watching

1.      Need a DACA primer about the lies in what the White House said on Tuesday about their decision before you reach out to your MoC? Associated Press did a fact check: https://apnews.com/20dd16f97a144a049bc502e51198c25c

2.      Wondering how automated accounts (i.e. "Bots") contribute to our perception of news circulating on Twitter? It's quite subtle, and very frightening how propagandists can use this medium to make us feel about particular news items. To understand better how we can be manipulated -- and how to better avoid it -- let's read Caroline Orr's (aka @RVAWonk's) fascinating case study "How Russian & Alt-Right Twitter Accounts Worked Together to Skew the Narrative About Berkeley":  https://arcdigital.media/how-russian-alt-right-twitter-accounts-worked-together-to-skew-the-narrative-about-berkeley-f03a3d04ac5d
