  1. Another reminder that Congress is on recess this week! This means that our MoCs are not required to be in D.C. They should be in their home states working, and hopefully holding town halls. Check if yours have scheduled any at  https://townhallproject.com/ . A good number of GOP MoCs are avoiding holding in-person town halls. Don't let them get away with it: let's make sure they know we want to meet with them! They work for us, after all.

  1. Here is a tool for people to see and share if their members of Congress are putting #PeopleOverParty. The tool helps you determine if our representatives in Washington are truly representing us by protecting our access to health care (with new post-CBO numbers), preserving critical government services, and securing our democracy. We can choose our state, Senator and/or Representative, and ask them if they can check the boxes by tweeting a state-specific representation checklist directly at them or by picking up the phone and dialing any of the district numbers provided: https://www.recesstoolkit.com/

  1. We’ve already seen civil rights changes happening in federal departments and in legislation.  Now, we see that Trump’s budget plan purposefully minimizes civil rights across the government:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-administration-plans-to-minimize-civil-rights-efforts-in-agencies/2017/05/29/922fc1b2-39a7-11e7-a058-ddbb23c75d82_story.html?utm_term=.95c01d6d6835  Let’s make sure our MoCs know that if they cannot stop this that we expect them to pick up this slack, however necessary to maintain civil rights for us all.

  1. While Trump is expected to make an announcement about the future of the United States' involvement with the Paris Agreement, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt has called for our withdrawal http://trib.in/2pgIhZM Let's give Mr. Pruitt a call to let him know that we want the U.S. to remain a signatory to the Paris Climate Agreement. We can find a call script and phone number here: https://5calls.org/issue/rectqlnanlSYY5wAP or we can email him here:  pruitt.scott@epa.gov

  1. Last Thursday, 22 GOP Senators sent a letter to Trump, urging him to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement http://bit.ly/2r7aked , http://bit.ly/2s4QiyH Conversely, forty Democratic Senators wrote to Trump in support of the Paris Agreement http://bit.ly/2r798HQ Let's find out where our MoC stand, then give them a call to hold them accountable, or offer our praise.

  1. The Department of Homeland Security has set up a public “Victim Identification and Notification Exchange” database (DHS-VINE) that includes contact information for some abuse victims:  https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/may/26/us-immigration-crime-database-victim-data-exposed Let’s let DHS Secretary John Kelly know that this is unacceptable:  The Honorable John F. Kelly, Secretary of Homeland Security, Washington, DC, 20528

  1. Saudi Arabia has been repeatedly criticized for air strikes in Yemen that have caused extensive civilian casualties and shows no sign of changing its policies. Yet Donald Trump is moving forward with a $110 billion arms sale to the Saudis. A bipartisan group of senators is proposing legislation to block this sale. (http://www.politico.com/story/2017/05/23/rand-paul-saudi-arabia-arms-sales-238730) Let's use the "oppose selling American weapons to countries that commit war crimes" script from Jen Hoffman's Americans of Conscience Actions Checklist and ask our senators to join this effort:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1L8HnKq6hcAfbWUa0a-7PPA4S7h9gqkRzFJGu60gJfws/preview?usp=sharing&sle=true

  1. There are a few pieces of legislation in the works that would put sanctions on Russia:  Russia Sanctions Review Act (S.341/H.R.1059) and the Counteracting Russian Hostilities Act of 2017 (S.94).  https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-russia-congress-sanctions-idUSKBN18L1WL  Let’s let all our MoCs know that we support these bills.  We do NOT want Trump in a position to lift sanctions against Russia given the current Russian interference investigations and most certainly,  not without Congressional approval.

  1. On the House agenda for a vote next week (June 5) is HR10, which would essentially dissolve Dodd-Frank which was put into place to avoid another financial meltdown.  There needs to be a better fix.  http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/finance/333665-the-choice-act-is-just-dodd-frank-20-we-can-do-better  We can read more about the bill, including its text at   https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/10   We need to tell our representatives that we oppose this bill.

  1. Within Trump's proposed budget are draconian cuts to the National Park Service (NPS).  https://www.nrdc.org/experts/eliminating-conservation-we-know-it-budget-proposal  Let's tell all of our MoC's that we want to keep the NPS fully funded at current levels.

  1. 1. From Tony the Democrat:  “103,155 total addresses written and 136,096 voters reached across all 3 of our campaigns since March 11. This is as of nearly midnight tonight. When I emailed the first 25 addresses to 5 complete strangers from Postcards for America, I never imagined the idea of handwriting and mailing postcards directly to voters would connect with so many of you.  We're now assigning around 1,500 voter addresses a day! Y'all are amazing. Thanks so much for the support to flip key seats!”  If we want to be part of this, we can use Abby the Address Bot which is ready to assign voter addresses conveniently and promptly via SMS text messaging. Using your cell phone, simply text the word HELLO to (803) 630-0295 and follow Abby's helpful prompts. Abby can immediately assign 5, 10, or 15 addresses to you making that part of the process quicker. For larger address lists or if you have any questions, contact us directly by email: Postcards@TonyTheDemocrat.org

  1. The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) has already experienced three leaks http://apne.ws/2rkOOnJ While the spills have been relatively small and contained, there is reasonable concern that a spill will occur where real damage is done. Let's continue our efforts to #DefundDAPL by divesting our money away from the banks that are funding the pipeline. Let's also make sure that we are contacting our former banks to let them know that they are losing our money (and how much of our money they are missing out on). DeFunddapl.org has a letter we can send, as well as a list of banks and credit unions where we can safely place our finances http://www.defunddapl.org/defund

  1. While the Trump administration continues to downplay, if not outright dispute, climate change, some on the right know the solid science needs to be addressed and supported.  https://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2017/0523/Why-some-Republicans-are-warming-to-climate-action  Let’s take a look at “republicEn, a nonprofit that strives to introduce conservative voices and solutions into the national discourse on climate change”, and encourage our climate-denier GOP members of Congress to look again and join in:  http://www.republicen.org/

  1. Texas state representative Matt Rinaldi, in the midst of a debate over a bill to help Trump enforce his unconstitutional executive orders to crack down on our immigrant friends and neighbors, called ICE on peaceful demonstrators and threatened to shoot one of his fellow legislators in the head. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/05/29/a-texas-republican-called-ice-on-protesters-then-lawmakers-started-to-scuffle/?utm_term=.813f4805236b) Rinaldi came within two points of being thrown out of office in the last election - and his Democratic opponent, Dorotha Ocker, is planning on running again. Let's help her hold Rinaldi accountable for his disgraceful actions by donating to her campaign and following her on social media. You can find her website with donate, Twitter and Facebook links here: https://dorothaocker.ngpvanhost.com/.

  1. Republicans in New Hampshire are joining forces with members of their party across the country to push a bill to make it harder for people to use their right to vote. (http://www.concordmonitor.com/Bill-would-add-new-requirements-to-prove-NH-voter-eligibility-8530966) People for the American Way will be hosting a virtual phone bank TODAY, May 31st, from 4:30pm to 7:30pm (training at 3:30pm) to rally New Hampshire voters against this dangerous legislation. You can sign up to help make calls here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvxBzKN2qcqKZZl9HMh9hvVpNlu-3EeTCvhNYqLKsFA3vn2A/viewform?c=0&w=1.

  1. "Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday shared a story that urges people to boycott companies that advertise on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC show. Hannity retweeted a story from conservative blog Media Equalizer that sides with him in the wake of advertisers pulling ads from his Fox show and calls for pressure on those that advertise on MSNBC.” He is upset about advertisers pulling ads from his show in respect to the lies he propagated regarding a conspiracy theory he continued to air about the murder of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich even though it was proved untrue:  http://thehill.com/media/335610-hannity-shares-call-to-target-maddows-advertisers  Let's call, tweet and email Hannity and tell him that his advertisers pulled out because he was creating lies and causing a family even greater grief over the loss of their son who was murdered in a blundered robbery attempt.  Let's tell his boss at FOX that Hannity is not a real journalist. Call Fox News:  1-888-369-4762  or tweet: @seanhannity or email: hannity@foxnews.com

  1. ACT for America, the largest grassroots anti-Muslim group in the country, announced plans to hold nationwide rallies dubbed the “March Against Sharia” on June 10.  https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2017/05/23/act-americas-march-against-sharia-official-facebook-page-full-racist-anti-muslim-sentiment Here is the list of scheduled marches:  http://www.actforamerica.org/rally  We need to be peaceful observers/allies/interrupters. If we see a marginalized person or group being harassed, we need to consider engaging with the person/group being harassed and/or contacting the authorities.

  1. Our MoCs are on recess right now, but we still keep up our efforts in making contact with them.  With all the newfound situations, we still need to tell our legislators that we want an independent commission to address the Trump/Russia connection.  http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/how-can-congress-set-independent-commission-investigate-russia-n739536  We know that what an independent investigation can do is different from what a special counsel can do.  We want both.  Call and/or write today.

  1. Although Trump has managed a lengthy Tweet storm about adding money to health care and about all the “fake news”, he has not managed to mention the victims of the Portland attack, Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, Rick Best (both killed) and Micah David-Cole Fletcher (who has survived): https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/may/29/portland-attack-donald-trump-called-on-to-make-statement-about-double  This news link includes a link to Dan Rather’s very stirring Facebook post on this subject (very worth reading) in which he tells Trump the names of these three honorable men. Let’s join Rather’s call to action to Trump by sending him a postcard with the names of these three heroes listed: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20500

  1. Secretary of Homeland Security, John Kelly, is not concerned about Jared Kushner’s efforts to set up back-channel communication with Russia while other experts have expressed great concern: https://apnews.com/ebe8344eaf254343bba39ce17008c7ee/Kelly-defends-plan-for-Russia-back-channel-as-a-'good-thing' and https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/as-white-house-defends-jared-kushner-experts-question-his-back-channel-move/2017/05/28/9a82cfea-43c9-11e7-b08b-1818ab401a7f_story.html?utm_term=.32e5918c1bf2 We can let him know why we ARE concerned: The Honorable John F. Kelly, Secretary of Homeland Security, Washington, DC, 20528 (yes, that is the whole address)

  1. Pulitzer-winning journalist and historian Thomas E. Ricks has reversed his own position on the “adults in the room” theory – thinking that people of honor should agree to serve in Trump’s administration to help limit damage. Ricks started by believing this but now thinks that people like national security adviser General HR McMaster need to step away: http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/05/28/general-mcmaster-step-downand-let-trump-be-trump-215199 Let’s join him in asking McMaster to stop destroying himself (and our republic) to defend the administration: National Security Adviser, The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20500

  1. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) believes that the US should stay in the environment-protecting Paris Agreement.  http://www.newsweek.com/republican-senator-says-trump-must-sign-paris-deal-climate-change-616951  Let's ask any of our climate-denying senators to reconsider their positions and join him. We can also thank Senator Graham for his on-going support of the environment. (Earlier this month he was a critical vote in ensuring methane emissions limits. https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/10/15611540/gop-senate-obama-methane-rule-repeal-donald-trump-congressional-review-act)  Lindsey Graham, 130 S Main St 7th Fl, Greenville SC 29601-4870.

  1. The FBI Director has still not been replaced, following the termination of James Comey http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/24/politics/expanded-fbi-search-lawyers/ Let's make sure our Representatives know that we want someone who is experienced, and non-partisan. 5Calls has a script and phone number available: https://5calls.org/issue/recjqUWRIEDfFKjAc

  1. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), a vocal leader of the Resistance, is recovering from minimally invasive heart surgery  http://bit.ly/2rxtfQT We can show our support by sending "Get Well" cards to: Representative  Elijah Cummings, 2163 Rayburn HOB, Washington, DC 20515

  1. A bipartisan bill that will make hearing aids affordable to those with mild-to-moderate hearing loss is under attack. Why? Because Gun Owners of America, a pro-gun group that’s even more extreme than the NRA, wants to deprive Senator Elizabeth Warren (D- MA), the lead author of the bill, a legislative victory—at the expense of people in need. https://www.bostonglobe.com/news/nation/2017/05/28/elizabeth-warren-bill-hearing-aid-draws-opposition-from-gun-rights-conservative-groups/WMAAAo9Z8zAK7AzZnrRUII/story.html Let’s thank Warren (202-224-4543) and Senator Chuck Grassley (202-224-3744) for co-sponsoring this humane legislation, and let’s tell our MoCs we want them to support it.

  1. For all his rhetoric about security, apparently Trump is willing to leave us unprotected when it comes to deadly pathogens, natural or manmade.  His budget proposes radical cuts to the agencies tasked with biosecurity: the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response, the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, the Center for Global Health:  https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/28/us/politics/biosecurity-trump-budget-defense.html  Let’s tell the White House that we’d rather see our health protected than invest $54 billion in weapons to kill people.

10.   In a prescient move early this month, the ACLU issued an “alert” to all travelers to Texas (including U.S. citizens) after the passage of SB4, Texas’s draconian immigration law:  https://www.aclutx.org/en/press-releases/aclu-issues-texas-travel-advisory  On Monday, a Texas legislator, Matt Rinaldi, impatient when a large, peaceful protest against SB4 brought legislative proceedings briefly to a halt, called in ICE to “incentivize” protesters to leave the state house: https://www.texastribune.org/2017/05/29/protesters-disrupt-house-proceedings-raise-opposition-sanctuary-cities/  We must let legislators and governors know, every time, that we are appalled by the aggressive use of immigration enforcement—against passengers on public transit, as in Minnesota, or injured pedestrians, as in Florida, or protesters like those in Texas. Matt Rinaldi (512-463-0468); Gov. Greg Abbott (512-463-1782)

  1. On June 10th, there will be anti-Muslim protests taking place across the United States, marketed as a "March Against Sharia." http://imagine2050.newcomm.org/2017/05/22/anti-muslim-march-against-sharia-planned/ Let's call our local mosques to see how we can help support them. We can also engage our local communities by writing a letter to the editor of our local newspaper, in support of our Muslim population.

  1. One of the best opportunities Democrats have to retake a state legislature this cycle is in Washington state, where we control the governorship and the State House and the Republicans control the state senate by ***just 1 seat***. This November, it'll be up for grabs in a special election in the 45th Legislative District, which only gave Donald Trump 28% of the vote in 2016. (http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/taxes-vs-trump-east-side-contest-will-determine-power-in-olympia/) Let's join our friends at flippable.org in donating to Manka Dhingra, the Democratic candidate for that seat: https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/page/flipwa45

  1. The group Iraq Veterans Against the War is wrapping up “About Face Veterans Action Camp,” where fifty veterans spent five days learning Nonviolent Direct Action. 1. 1. While the Trump administration continues to support a crackdown on “dangerous” immigrants so far as to appeal a ruling to the Supreme Court, what is it doing about the homegrown danger of extremism?  Far right, white supremacists continue to be the real terror base for our country. Three of our citizens were killed by white supremacists last week alone and nary a word from the White House:  http://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2017/05/27/19041594/suspect-in-portland-hate-crime-murders-is-a-known-white-supremacist  and http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/page/ct-richard-collins-stabbing-racism-page-perspec-20170526-story.html  Let’s tell our MoCs and the White House that it is time to reel in these terrorists and investigate their wide-spread radicalization for the safety of all of us.

  1. Trump's budget proposal includes a 31% decrease in funding for the Environmental Protection Agency.  Funding for the Great Lakes Restoration would be cut to zero. National Wildlife Federation spokesman Jordan Lubetkin blasted the budget proposal. "It would bring Great Lakes restoration to a halt," he said. "It would undermine efforts to clean up toxic pollution, to halt invasive species like Asian carp, and to prevent harmful algal blooms that on Lake Erie left 500,000 people without a drinking water supply."  http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trumps-budget-cuts-epa-31-percent-campaign-promise/story?id=47583180 Fortunately it is a budget proposal and Congress must approve it.  Let's call our MoC and let them know that this cut would be disastrous. The chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee is Thad Cochran (R-MS and the chair of the House Appropriations Committee is Rodney Feelinghuysen (R-NJ). The budget that comes out of these two committees will be the one voted on.

  1. 1. While we are absorbing the tragic news in Portland, Oregon, we have learned that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will not be hosting the annual Ramadan dinner at the State Department:  http://mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKBN18M2IE  And that President Trump used his Ramadan message as an opportunity to riff on terrorism, something George W. Bush managed not to do a couple months after 9/11:  http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/ramadan-2017-trump-statement-terrorism-sentence-george-bush-september-11-a7758301.html  Let’s write to Secretary Tillerson to let him know that this is not the year to back away from hosting a Ramadan gathering: U.S. Department of State, 2201 C Street, NW, Washington, DC 20520

  1. 1. It's being reported that Jared Kushner requested a secure, private line between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin http://bit.ly/2qoWrcT What's more, Kushner has had undisclosed contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak. Let's let our MoCs know that we want Kushner out of the White House.

  1. Greg Gianforte's win following his assault on a reporter sets a dangerous precedent; that we are okay with physical aggression among our elected officials and that we will tolerate attacks on our free press http://wapo.st/2ruOR0e  This cannot stand. A recent report from the Brennan Center suggests Republicans have a 16-17 seat advantage in the House because of gerrymandering, and that congressional maps drawn by independent or bipartisan redistricting commissions, the courts or split governments are less gerrymandered than those drawn by one-party governments (https://www.brennancenter.org/publication/extreme-maps). Voters should choose their elected representatives, not the other way around! Let's join Re:Act (https://reactletter.com ), check out redistricting reform bills in our states here: https://www.brennancenter.org/redistricting-reform-tracker-state-bills and then call our state legislators and encourage them to move forward with reform efforts before the next census.

With all the information coming out about connections between Russia and the White House, the "March for Truth" scheduled for June 3rd could not be timelier. Here's the stated purpose of the march: "to demand urgency, transparency and an impartial investigation into Russian interference in the U.S. election and ties to the Trump administration." 1. One of our most valuable and hard-fought rights is the right to vote. On May 11, President Trump announced the formation of a Voter Integrity Commission (what a misnomer). Perhaps a more correct name would have been "Voter Purge Commission." Legal and political questions proliferate about voting rights and the President’s Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, vice-chaired by Kansas’s Kris Kobach, a notorious proponent of tighter voter requirements:   http://bangordailynews.com/2017/05/26/opinion/contributors/why-the-trump-voter-fraud-commission-is-dangerous/   The Democratic Governors Association seems alarmed as it has begun a new initiative called Unrig the Map, which provides an interactive map of all the upcoming gubernatorial races nationwide and lengthy reading about gerrymandering: http://unrigthemap.com  We should make ourselves aware of governor's races in our states and see how we can unrig the map.

  1. Next week—May 29-June 2—Congress is in recess.  Hopefully our MoCs will schedule town halls, be present in their local offices, or hold scheduled meetings with constituents. 1. Trump embarrassed the American people at the NATO conference and then went on to call the Germans, one of our strongest allies, evil.  "Trump’s singling out of German carmakers for contributing to the nation’s lopsided trade surplus follows rebukes of Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp.and attacks on America’s own automakers for shipping cars from Mexico. The rhetoric overlooks that BMW AG, Daimler AG and Volkswagen AG operate some of their biggest factories in the world in southern U.S. states, and the impact that putting a stop to imports would have on the thousands of dealers who sell German vehicles." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-05-26/trump-blasts-german-carmakers-u-s-sales-and-threatens-barriers Let's call the White House and let trump know, we care about our German allies and that many German car makers build their cars here and American dealerships sell them providing jobs to Americans.  Contact the White House herehttps://www.whitehouse.gov/contact

  1. Last year, the House developed the Climate Solutions Caucus, a bipartisan group of Representatives who focus their efforts on policies related to the environment and climate change. http://bit.ly/2qirVNV The group is kept strictly bipartisan, with an even number of Democrat and Republican members, and is continuing to grow. However, it can still be a struggle getting Republican Members of Congress to join. If we have a Republican Representative, let's encourage them to join the Climate Solutions Caucus! In addition to calling them directly, we can also edit and then send them Climate Parents' form letter: http://bit.ly/2r4r7gI

  1. Supplying weapons to a country which continuously commits war crimes makes the U.S. complicit in those violations of law http://bit.ly/2r5NsNx We need Congress to block these deals and prohibit the selling of weapons to human rights abusers. 1. The Senate will soon be voting on the Regulatory Accountability Act of 2017 (S. 951). The RAA will effectively politicize regulations, making it easier for corporations to sidestep rules which have been put in place to keep us safe. For those of us whose MoC will be hosting townhalls, let's make sure we're asking about their stance on the RAA. The Indivisible Guide has sample Townhall questions available, which we could also use when we call our MoC's office: http://bit.ly/2r5Z8iw

Members of this committee are:   https://www.govtrack.us/congress/committees/SSHR  The chairman, Lamar Alexander, determines whether or not further action is taken on this bill.  The quest for a $15 minimum will be a long one.  We need to make our voices heard at every opportunity to keep the momentum moving forward. Let's write to Chairman Lamar Alexander, Committee on HELP, 428 Dirksen SOB, Washington DC 20510 and let him know that we support S1242.  (We can also call the HELP committee at 202-224-5375)  If any of our own senators are on the committee we can call them as well.

  1. Greg Gianforte's victory less than 24 hours after assaulting a journalist for asking him a question sends a very frightening message to the media as they attempt to do their critical job of holding public officials accountable - especially in this time, where Trump and Steve Bannon paint the press as "the enemy." (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/journalists-press-freedom-advocates-react-alleged-assault-reporter/story?id=47645384) Let's send them a message of our own that we stand by them, and we're outraged.
