  1. There seem to be a couple of reasons why the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence is not moving as quickly on its efforts to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. 1): Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., the chairman of the panel, has refused to cooperate with the information requests of Democrats on the committee. https://www.yahoo.com/news/senate-russia-probe-flounders-amid-partisan-bickering-130323166.html and 2): Reuters reports there are currently only 7 staffers working on the case, a number that pales with similar big-time probes of the recent past (there were 46 staffers on the Benghazi probe) http://www.politicususa.com/2017/04/24/senate-46-staffers-investigate-benghazi-7-trumprussia.html Why don't we call Sen. Burr at 1(202) 224-1700  and ask him a) why he won't sign his colleagues' letters requesting more information, and b) why his committee is so understaffed?

  1. When the US Chief Justice speaks out on the alarming nature of Trump’s immigration stance, we know something is amiss.  http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-court-immigration-idUSKBN17S2GN In addition to the points in that article, like so many other impulsive initiatives in the Trump administration that are poorly thought out and executed, the database of targeted supposed criminal immigrants includes babies and children. http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-children-in-immigration-database-20170426-story.html Let’s let our legislators know that we are counting on them to keep those in this country safe and treated by due process.

  1. The House Oversight Committee now says that Flynn, Trump’s first national security advisor, may have violated federal law by failing to disclose his business dealings with Russia—and the White House is refusing the House Oversight Committee’s request to turn over documents on the matter. More info: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/25/us/politics/michael-flynn-white-house-documents-russia.html. Here’s a good refresher on why there is concern about Trump’s ties to Russia: https://swalwell.house.gov/issues/russia-trump-his-administration-s-ties Let’s contact our Members of Congress, even if we’ve done so many times before, and tell them that we care deeply about this issue and we want them to push, push, push for an independent investigation.

  1. From Postcard for America:  Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Edward J. Markey (D-MA) introduced legislation to build a 100 percent renewable energy economy by 2050. It calls for 50 percent of U.S. electricity to be produced by renewable energy sources like wind or solar by 2030, and 100 percent by 2050. It would require zero carbon emission vehicle standards and prohibit federal approval of oil and gas pipelines, among other measures.  There is not Bill number yet (I'll add it into the GoogleDoc when it appears) but it is called the "100 by 50" Act.  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CZpsMgDuwF-nsoychbhUBEQOb0v7_ISQUXQ9hqudi9U/edit

  1. Scott Pruitt is planning to close the Midwest EPA office. This would have devastating effects for the health of our Great Lakes.http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/330521-lawmakers-push-back-against-reported-plan-to-close-regional-epa Let's write to Pruitt to let him know that we care about our Great Lakes and ask him to keep the Midwest EPA office open. EPA, Scott Pruitt, Mail code 1101A, 1200 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington DC 20460

  1. Trump signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to “reconsider” the safety regulations on off-shore oil drilling put in place after the Deepwater Horizon disaster and the bans on drilling in the southeastern Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.  https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/27/us/politics/trump-offshore-drilling.html.  For the sake of the climate and the oil workers, let’s contact Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke and let him know what we think at Dept. of the Interior, 1849 C Street N.W., Washington, DC 20240.

  1. Even thought it has been delayed, let’s not fall asleep at the health care wheel: https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/the-new-health-care-bill-may-be-little-more-than-an-exercise-in-blame-shifting/2017/04/27/4701ae48-2b52-11e7-b605-33413c691853_story.html Let’s please use this extra time to remind our MoCs that we all deserve quality healthcare.  Healthcare should be a right, not a privilege.

  1. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD)is speaking out about Flynn: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/oversight-committee-flynn-investigation-to-be-launched-by-dod-inspector-general/  Let’s say thanks to Cummings:  2163 Rayburn HOB, Washington, DC 20515

  1. Sen. Shaheen (D-NH) has called attention to the concern that the Russia situation will become normalized: http://thehill.com/policy/cybersecurity/330916-dem-senator-fears-russian-election-interference-could-be-normalized Please let’s say thanks to her and then reach out to your MoCs with this concern. https://www.shaheen.senate.gov

  1. Columbine, University of Texas Tower, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, Pulse Orlando.  The gun tragedies in our country continue.  Nevertheless, Trump addressed the NRA telling them that  "The eight-year assault on your Second Amendment freedoms has come to a crashing end." http://www.npr.org/2017/04/28/525930318/trump-to-be-first-sitting-president-since-reagan-to-address-nra  Let’s remind our legislators that we believe that the right to remain alive always supercedes  the right to own a gun.

On May 1, 1969 the now-beloved Fred Rogers testified before Congress in hopes of saving the newly created PBS from budget cuts.  It worked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXEuEUQIP3Q PBS and all of public media is now under the threat of even larger budget cuts.  Let’s join Protect my Public Media in their “Let’s Make the Most of This Beautiful Day” campaign to save this funding: .  Find your cardigan and take a selfie!  http://protectmypublicmedia.org/beautiful-day-upload/

  1. While Trump briefed 100 senators on the possibilities of war with North Korea, a group of women leaders from 40 countries (including both North and South Korea) called Women Cross the DMZ sent a letter to Trump, Tilllerson, Matthis, and McMaster urging the use of diplomacy to end the nuclear crisis and the threat of war facing the Korean peninsula: https://www.womencrossdmz.org/web/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Trump-admin-letter-April25.pdf  The NY Times carried this report: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/26/world/asia/north-korea-trump-nuclear-war.html  We can show our support for peace by writing to christine@womencrossdmz.org

  1. We like the idea of moving manufacturing back to the states to support American workers who are treated better than those in some other countries like those who produce Ivanka’s line.  http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2017/04/25/ivanka_trump_s_clothing_line_made_by_chinese_factory_workers_earning_1_an.html  Let’s ask Ivanka and her dad to set an example and show other companies how this can be done by bringing ALL their manufacturing back to the states. https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact

  1. The Ninth Circuit Court has stayed more than a couple of Trump’s executive orders and he’s threatened to shut them down for usurping his power.  Sen. McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Flake (R-AZ) appear to agree with this have introduced legislation this week to do so.  Sen. Daines (R-MT) and Sen. Sullivan (R-AK) also put forth similar legislation this week. The ninth circuit court, which covers California, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Alaska, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and Montana, plus Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, is the largest appellate court in the USA.  The senators proposing this legislation come from conservative states and unsaid in the legislation but a long held belief by conservatives is that this court is too liberal in its decisions. However, their stated reason is that the court has too many cases.  "Ninth Circuit Judge Alex Kozinski, a Ronald Reagan appointee, said Thursday that every attempt to split up the court has been misguided. By staying large, he said, the circuit can reallocate judges to where they’re needed most. The reason for the backlog over the years, he said, has been largely the result of open seats staying vacant for months, and a resistance to adding more judges to the circuit. “The problem is not solved until you appoint more judges.” The court is opposed to the split. http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-says-hes-absolutely-looking-at-breaking-up-the-9th-circuit-court-2017-4  Let’s let our senators know that we don't want the ninth circuit court split either and want them to vote no on these pieces of legislation.

  1. "U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to allow national monument designations to be rescinded or reduce the size of sites as the administration pushes to open up more federal land to drilling, mining and other development." Trump and his Republican colleagues are making the predictable argument that states, not the federal government, should have the right to decide "which land is protected and which is open for development."  http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-interior-monuments-idUSKBN17S1MH  31 senators, led by Tom Udall (D-NM), have sent an open letter to Trump objecting to the EO. Why don't we join Udall in telling Trump "Americans care deeply about the National Monuments and their voices should be considered if you proceed with any potential changes to the monument designations." We can let 45 know by sending him an email or calling him:  https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact. On Twitter, there is a hashtag associated with critique of this EO, so let's use it in our tweets: #MonumentsforAll.

  1. The vote to replace the ACA could come as early as Friday. While the Freedom Caucus is now on board with the bill, the MacArthur-Meadows amendment would undermine coverage guaranteed by the ACA by allowing states to get a waiver from having to use the ACA’s “community rating” requirement, which prevents insurers from charging premiums based on customers' health.  Specifically, it would allow states with waivers 1) to charge people with pre-existing conditions much higher premiums due to their illnesses, putting coverage out of reach for some, 2) to opt out of covering “essential health benefits”, an ACA mandate that all insurance plans cover certain services, such as mental health and prescription drug benefits, and 3) to loosen restrictions on how much more older people can be charged than younger people. http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/330656-new-obamacare-repeal-bill-puts-centrists-on-the-spot In addition, this amendment to the GOP- proposed health plan exempts Congress members and their staffs so that they can maintain their current, ACA-based, health insurance.  Also, the bill also features cuts to expanded Medicaid that has helped countless citizens. http://www.vox.com/2017/4/25/15429982/gop-exemption-ahca-amendment We the people have gotten used to having quality care no matter where we live and we expected this administration to live up to its word to improve health care and costs. This does neither. We need to let our legislators know that this is not a healthcare plan, as it will hurt so many people and we want Congress to have the same insurance options as everyone else.

  1. With years of documentation on why trickle-down economics does not work the way it once thought it would, Trump’s new tax plan appears that he is not privy to that information.  It gives big tax cuts to businesses and the wealthy with Trump saying that it will put people back to work. http://thehill.com/policy/finance/330696-trump-proposes-sweeping-tax-reform  Let’s let Trump know that experience has shown us that when corporations and the wealthy have more money, they generally do not use it to create more jobs for people who need/want to work.

  1. While overused, the word despicable comes to mind when Trump had the audacity to compare his first 100 days ratings to those of broadcasting after 9/11.  Even the foreign press picked up on this statement. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-9-11-approval-ratings-interview-who-with-first-100-days-us-president-world-trade-center-a7698516.html Let’s tell the President that he is no longer in the television industry and has many more things to worry about comparing ratings.  Contact the White House here:  https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact

A federal judge in San Francisco has temporarily halted the threat of blocking of federal funds to sanctuary cities and once again Trump blasts a judge for doing his job:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/social-issues/2017/04/25/c9e212c8-29f7-11e7-b605-33413c691853_story.html   While thanking judges is not a usual practice, let’s say thanks to Judge William H. Orrick for defending American law.  Write him at: San Francisco Courthouse, 450 Golden Gate Ave, San Francisco, CA, 94102

The kickoff is a national livestream on May 13. We should consider hosting launch parties in our communities to watch the livestream and learn the details of this plan. http://act.foodandwaterwatch.org/site/MessageViewer?dlv_id=80482&em_id=69574.0

  1. The Movement for Black Lives,  a coalition of groups across the United States representing the interests of black communities, has a terrific idea: in the week before Mother’s Day, organizations across the country will bail out mothers who would otherwise spend Mother’s Day in jail simply because they cannot afford bail.   Information on Mama’s Bail Out Day and how to donate are here: https://nomoremoneybail.org

  1. The idea of net neutrality is that all Internet traffic should be equal to everyone. Corporations and those who can afford it should not get faster speeds any more than they should get cleaner drinking water.  http://www.businessinsider.com/steve-wozniak-apple-net-neutrality-2017-4 Here's the direct link for leaving a comment about net neutrality for the benefit of all Americans, an issue already recently resolved after significant public comment!  Revisiting the issue is a waste of taxpayer dollars, and threatens the availability of an open Internet for all.  FCC comment link:  HTTPS://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/express (In top box, enter "14-28" for the proceeding number and fill out the rest of the comment form.)

  1. Trump has requested a special meeting with the entire Senate at the White House today.  All indications point to his looking for permission to go to war over North Korea. China is asking Washington for patience.  However, we know that Trump want to improve his ratings and needs to show that he is strong and decisive.  He thinks that making a show of force would help him do both.  Nothing Trump has done so far has been done in a careful, thoughtful manner.  With two leaders such as Trump and Kim who are so volatile, this is getting more dangerous.  https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/24/world/asia/north-korea-nuclear-missile-program.html Let’s contact our senators and tell them to oppose a war decision and to impress that diplomacy, while it may be slow, is always the first choice.

  1. From Daily ActionToday's Daily Action is to call both of your Senators at (844) 241-1141 to demand an independent non-partisan commission, like the 9/11 Commission, to investigate Russian interference in the November election. After the House investigations became a debacle, the last great hope for Congress was that the Senate Intelligence Committee was going to get this right. 1. The Committee will require all of the documents to conduct a thorough investigation. http://thehill.com/policy/national-security/330410-white-house-rejects-oversight-request-for-flynn-documents Let’s let the White House know we want them to comply with the request by the House Oversight committee to provide the materials they requested on Flynn. https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/write-or-call

  1. Because he has no legislative accomplishments to point to in his first 100 days, Trump is bragging about the unprecedented number of executive orders he signed. Here's what Trump said about President Obama just one year ago:  "The country wasn't based on executive orders. Right now, Obama goes around signing executive orders. He can't even get along with the Democrats, and he goes around signing all these executive orders. It's a basic disaster. You can't do it."  https://www.apnews.com/e9f75e03bb7a41c1a44e9512d4990832/Trump-touts-executive-orders-he-once-lambasted  Let's send him postcards with his own quote to remind him of his hypocrisy and to show that we're paying attention. From one of our own:  The special election for Montana's At-Large Congressional District is on May 25th. http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/330017-special-election-spotlight-shifts-to-montana The DCCC has made a 'low six figure' contribution to Rob Quist's campaign. Encourage the DNC  https://my.democrats.org/page/s/contact-the-democrats and the DCCC http://dccc.org/contact/ to do more to back Rob Quist: send paid staffers and organizers plus more money to flip this district to the Democrats.

  1. We know that the Trump administration, and specifically FCC chairman Ajit Pai, has put Net Neutrality under attack. What might be unclear, though, is just how big of a threat this is to all of us. It is about much more than selling your browsing history. Many aren’t aware that it’s thanks to Net Neutrality that anyone can mobilize online. When activists are able to turn out thousands of people in the streets at a moment’s notice, it’s because companies like Comcast aren’t allowed to block their messages or websites. The Trump administration is doing everything in its power to clamp down on dissent. If we lose Net Neutrality, it will have succeeded. Learn more about this issue (https://www.savetheinternet.com/net-neutrality-what-you-need-know-now). There’s a petition too (http://act.freepress.net/sign/internet_NN_trump), but best of all would be for us to bend our MoCs’ ears.
